Signup bonus:

The Chase Ink Preferred Card is offering a whopping signup bonus of 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points for opening the card and spending $8,000 in 3 months. Those points are worth a minimum of $1,000 cash back or $1,250 towards paid travel, but they can be worth much more as shown below.

Previously this card required $15,000 in spending to earn a signup bonus!

No other card offers that many Chase Ultimate Rewards points for signing up. The next closest are the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card and Ink Business Cash® Credit Card at $750 cash back in the form of 75,000 points for spending $6,000 in 3 months.

Annual fee:

There is a $95 annual fee for the primary card and no annual fee for additional cardholders.

How to apply, Business card and 5/24 info:

This is a business card, but you may already have a business that needs a card to keep track of expenses. For example if your name is Joe Smith and you sell items online, or if you have any other side business and want a credit card to better keep track of business expenditures you can open a business credit card for “Joe Smith” as the business. You don’t need to file any messy government paperwork to be allowed to do that. Just be sure to select “Sole Proprietorship” as the business type and then switch the Tax Identification field from Employer Identification number to social security number and use your personal social security number.

If you have business paperwork you can apply under your business name. Otherwise, it’s critical to just write your own name as the business name if you are just applying for your own small business as a Sole Proprietorship that doesn’t have any business paperwork. You can then send in bills in your own name for verification.

If you’re like me and you run more than one business, you can signup for multiple of the same card for each business to manage each businesses expenses separately.

Some Chase cards are subject to 5/24 restrictions, meaning that you might not be approved if you have been approved for 5 or more consumer credit cards in the past 24 months. Enforcement of 5/24 has been patchy for the past year and the only way to know if you can get approved is by trying to apply.

Note that the Chase system automatically counts cards like authorized user cards and store cards as cards that count towards 5/24, but if you explain to Chase that those cards are merely authorized user cards or store cards they can manually approve you for a new card.

You can check your credit report for free at the federally authorized annualcreditreport.com to check how many accounts are shows as being open in the past 24 months.

It’s important to note that business cards from most banks, including Chase business cards, do not get added to your 5/24 count of recently opened cards. That’s because business cards from most banks don’t show up on your personal credit report and the 5/24 count is based off of your personal credit report. That means that applying for these cards won’t “hurt” your 5/24 count.

Another benefit of the card not reporting on your personal credit report is that when you spend money on personal cards your credit score will be hurt even if you pay your bill on time. A whopping 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization. You can pay off your card bill before your statement is generated to avoid that, but that takes effort and laying out money well before you have to. Additionally it’s good to have the statement close with a couple dollars to show the card is active and being paid every month. On an business cards from banks like AMEX and Chase it’s just not reported, so you can wait until the money is due without it having a negative effect on your score. That also means if you close the card, it won’t have an effect on your credit score.

Card earnings:

3 points per dollar on travel, including airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises, subways, trains, taxis, tolls, parking, Airbnb, Lyft, Uber, etc.
3 points per dollar on internet, cable, and phone services. This includes streaming services like Netflix and more.
3 points per dollar on shipping purchases.
3 points per dollar on search engine and social media advertising.
Max of $150,000 of annual spending in bonus categories.
1 point per dollar elsewhere.
There are no foreign transaction fees.

Spend Threshold:

You’ll need to spend $8,000 on this card within 3 months.

You can pay your federal taxes for a 1.82% fee.

My local natural gas company allows me to prepay up to $1,000 on a credit card for a $1.65 flat fee. That’s a great way to earn miles and help meet a spend threshold. My electricity supplier allows me to pay with a credit card for free as long as I am enrolled in autopay.

Cell Phone Protection:

If you pay your cell phone bill on the card you cell phone will be insured from damage, theft, or involuntary and accidental parting until the end of the calendar month following the payment.

This benefit covers claims up to $1,000 and there is a $100 deductible for claims. You do not need to pay for the phone on this card to file a claim.

You can file up to 3 claims per 12 month period.

This card offers triple points for cell phone bills, making it a good value for your monthly bill thanks to the insurance.

Other card benefits:

Primary rental car CDW insurance in every country, when the rental is for business purposes.
Primary rental car CDW insurance in every country outside of the US, when the rental is for personal purposes. Rentals without a business purpose in the US have secondary coverage.
Extended warranty adds a year of coverage, up to $10,000 per claim.

Trip Delay Reimbursement covers $500 per person for reasonable expenses (Hotel, food, toiletries, medicine, etc) required for delays more than 12 hours.

If you or someone in your household has an Ink Preferred Card you can redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned from any card at a value of 1.25 cents towards paid travel.

If you or someone in your household has a Chase Sapphire Reserve® you can get a value of 1.5 cents per point towards paid travel. That makes the signup bonus worth at least $1,500 towards travel.

Airline and hotel points transferability:

If you or someone in your household has an Ink Preferred Card you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points into valuable airline and hotel mileage currencies.

A Chase Bifecta would consist of a household that has the Ink Preferred Card and the Ink Unlimited or Chase Freedom Unlimited®. The total effective annual fees would be either $95. With the Ink Preferred Card you would earn 3 points per dollar on travel, internet, cable, phone, shipping, and more. With an Unlimited card you would earn 1.5 points per dollar everywhere. Either way you’ll be able to transfer all of your points into airline miles or hotel points, but with the Ink Preferred Card you can also use the points with a value of 1.25 cents each towards travel.

A Chase Trifecta adds a no annual fee card like Ink Cash or Chase Freedom into the mix, so your total effective annual fee will still be just $95. Both of those cards give options to earn a whopping 5 points per dollar in various categories on top of the 3 points per dollar that the Ink Preferred Card offers and the 1.5 points per dollar everywhere else with an Ink Unlimited or Freedom Unlimited card.

Having all 3 Chase Ink cards means you can take advantage of bonus points on all purchases that you make while not having any effect on your personal credit.

A Chase Quadfecta would add both the Ink Cash and Chase Freedom on top of a Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card and an Unlimited card, so your total effective annual fee will still be just $95.

A Chase Quinfecta would add either the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve to that mix, adding $95 or $250 to the additional effective annual fee after the Sapphire Reserve travel credit. The Sapphire Reserve also allows you and anyone in your household to transfer Chase points into miles. Plus it allows you to use points at a value of 1.5 cents each towards travel.

The fixed value is excellent and doesn’t require hunting down award space, but those points can be much more valuable by transferring them into airline miles or hotel points.

If I want to stay in a 5 star Park Hyatt in the Maldives, Melbourne, NYC, Paris, Sydney, or Tokyo that would cost over $1,000/night, I can instantly transfer 25-40K points to Hyatt to do that, a value of up to 6 cents per point.
If I need a one-way flight from Cleveland (or Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Montreal, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Toronto, etc) to NYC that can cost $500 each way, I can instantly transfer 7.5K points to British Airways to book a short-haul on American with no last minute booking fees. Or if American doesn’t have availability I can instantly transfer 10K points to United for their short-haul award. That’s a value of up to 7 cents per point.
Air Canada offers one-way short haul awards for just 6K miles. You can also get stopover awards for 5K miles, build round-the-world awards, and get free lap child awards in the US/Canada and bring lap children to anywhere else in the world for just C$25!
If I want to stay in a non-chain hotel that costs $300/night and don’t want to pay cash, I can redeem 20K points for the room thanks to my Sapphire Reserve card’s minimum redemption value of 1.5 cents per point or 24K points with the Sapphire Preferred’s minimum redemption value of 1.25 cents per point
Flying Blue has award flights to Israel for 25K miles for adults or 18,750 miles for kids.
If I want to fly in a $25,000 ANA First Class Suite round-trip from the US to Tokyo, I can instantly transfer 145K or 160K points to Virgin Atlantic. That’s a value of up to 23 cents per point. You can now redeem one-way awards for half the price as well!
If I want to book a $2,281 business class ticket on Air Canada to Tel Aviv I can redeem 152K points for the flight thanks to my Sapphire Reserve card’s minimum redemption value of 1.5 cents per point or 182K points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s minimum redemption value of 1.25 cents per point, plus I’ll earn Qantas miles for more future travel as it’s considered a paid flight instead of an award flight.

I’ve used my 85K free night in hotels selling for more than $1,000/night, easily covering the cost of the card’s annual fee.

Monthly Restaurant Statement Credit:

You can earn up to $25/month in statement credits for spending at restaurants worldwide. That includes one or more purchases for dining in, taking out, delivery, or when using apps like Doordash, Grubhub, Uber Eats, or reloading your Starbucks balance from the Starbucks app etc.

Platinum Elite Status:

This card offers Platinum Elite status, which gives 50% bonus points, 4pm late checkout, a points or breakfast amenity, suite upgrades, lounge access, and more.

Elite Night Credits:

You’ll also get 25 elite night credits for having the card, the most of any Marriott card.

You can stack that with 15 elite night credits for having a Marriott business card to get 40 elite night credits. You’ll then need just 10 more elite night credits from stays, promotions, or spending on select cards to earn a Platinum choice award such as 5 suite award nights. At 75 credits you’ll earn Titanium status and a Titanium choice award such as a 40K free night or 5 more suite award nights. The credits also count towards earning lifetime status.

Annual Earned Choice Award:

Spend $60K in a calendar year and get an earned choice award.

Choose from a bonus 85K night, 5 suite night upgrades, or $750 off a Marriott mattress.

Global Entry/TSA Pre-Check:

Premium AMEX Protections And Lost Item Protection:

My favorite AMEX benefit is return protection. If you need to return an item up to $300 and a store won’t take it back due to a time limited or final sale policy, AMEX will gladly refund you thanks to return protection. Nearly all of the time you’ll even be able to keep the item, but if you are asked to send it back, the return shipping will be free. This benefit is valid for $1,000 of returns per card per calendar year. Additionally, if a store charges a restocking fee to return an item then AMEX will cover that cost, up to $300/item, as part of their return protection coverage.
Trip delay insurance will reimburse expenses due to a flight delay, up to $500 of coverage for 6+ hour delays.
Trip cancellation and interruption insurance covers trips cancelled or delayed due to weather, terrorism, jury duty, or sudden illness or injury with up to $10,000 of coverage per trip and $20,000 per rolling 12 month period.
Baggage Insurance covers lost, stolen, or damaged luggage on plain, train, ship, or bus tickets paid for on the card.
If your item, up to $10,000, is lost, stolen, or broken within 90 days you’ll be covered! Many cards offer stolen item protection, but that claim requires a police report to be filed and often has a cap of just $1,000 on other cards.
If a store charged a restocking fee to return an item then AMEX will cover it, up to $300/item, as part of their return protection coverage.
You get an additional year of warranty coverage, double the original manufacturers warranty, and if you have any issue in the extended warranty year they’ll pay to have it fixed or refund your entire purchase price without a hassle. This benefit is far more valuable than warranty benefits offered by other banks.

You can pay your federal taxes for a 1.82% fee. If you overpay your taxes you can request a refund or apply it to your next year’s taxes.

My local natural gas company allows me to prepay up to $1,000 on a credit card for a $1.65 flat fee. That’s a great way to earn miles and help meet a spend threshold. My electricity supplier allows me to pay with a credit card for free as long as I am enrolled in autopay.

Airline transfer bonus:

You can transfer increments of 60K Marriott points into 20K-25K airline miles or 30K miles with United.

Marriott has dozens of valuable airline transfer partners, such as Aegean, Alaska, American, JAL, Qantas, and dozens more!

You can find Marriott transfer partners and ratios here.

Miles from these airlines can be very valuable and hard to get from other sources. For example JAL miles allow you to book awards on Emirates, AA, and BA with discounted or no fuel surcharges as well as mileage bargains. Alaska miles opens up bargains on airlines like Cathay Pacific and Qantas with no fuel surcharges and they allow 2 free stopovers on awards.

Premium internet access:

Cardholders get free premium in-room internet at Marriott hotels.

Dan’s quick thoughts:

This is a very expensive credit card, but between the $25 monthly restaurant credit and the 85K free night, it shouldn’t be hard to cover the cost of the annual fee and then some.

Marriott points are certainly not what they used to be, but the Platinum elite status and 25 elite night credits make this card a compelling value for Marriott enthusiasts and the welcome bonus is excellent.

Chase points normally transfer into Marriott points at a 1K:1K ratio, but until 6/15 you can get 1,400 Marriott points for every 1,000 Chase points.

That’s not a particularly good deal. I’d value Marriott points at about 0.6 cents each, so with typical usage you would only get a value of 0.84 cents per Chase point. You can do much better with other transfer or redemption options. You can often buy Marriott points with a promo here that will make more sense than a transfer.

However, If you need some Marriott points for a niche lucrative hotel redemption then it can make sense to transfer or purchase points.

For example, a 5 night stay in an overwater villa in the Maldives can be had at hotels like the Ritz-Carlton Maldives, W Maldives, or S. Regis Maldives from 284K Marriott points, or 202.8K Chase points, where you can often get outsized value for your points. I’ve stayed at the latter 2, and they are heaven on Earth! With paid rates that can exceed $10,000 for a 5 night stay after tax, that’s an awesome use of Marriott points.

You can get a 30% bonus when you transfer Capital One Points to Virgin Red until 4/30. The points typically transfer instantly at a 1K:1.3K ratio with this promo.

You’ll need to open a Virgin Red account for transfers from Capital One. You can link your Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Red account during the signup process or later on here and points are shared between Virgin Red and Virgin Atlantic.

Virgin Red/Virgin Atlantic points never expire!

In general, Virgin Atlantic charges high fuel surcharges that kill the value of many of their awards.

Note that you can save big by booking travel as 2 one-way trips from the US, instead of a round-trip. Fuel surcharges for one-way or round-trip travel originating in Israel are also very low, making for some great bargains for Virgin Atlantic travel.

You may even save more by calling Virgin Atlantic at 800-365-9500 and asking for a companion discount.

You can hold award tickets for 3 days.

Dates changes or cancellations cost $50 ($35 if originating in UK).

Flying on Delta:

There are some notable sweet spots on partner airlines:

Virgin Atlantic points can be a bargain for flying on Delta, though with the recent devaluation it’s not what it used to be.

If you have problems typing in your desired airport you will need to click the location icon as shown below and manually search for your destination by country and state. If your destination still isn’t available you will have to call Virgin Atlantic to book award travel to that destination.

If the option to search for points isn’t available you also may need to try selecting another airport, click on pay with points, and then switch the airport. For example NYC to LAX didn’t work for me at first, but I switched the destination to San Francisco, clicked on pay with points, and then switched back to Los Angeles.

On the search page you can select one-way or round-trip, exact dates, flexible within 1 week, or within 5 weeks by changing the word “dates” in the URL to “calendar” on the award calendar search results page. You can also change the class of service by clicking on “Show advanced options.” When you are viewing the award calendar you can toggle it to show direct flights only.

You generally won’t want to use Virgin points for Delta flights to the UK, as they tack on fuel surcharges.

However you can fly on Delta to the rest of Europe for just 30K points (23,077 points with a 30% bonus) in coach or 50K points (38,462 points with a 30% bonus) in business class each way.

For the rest of the world besides Europe, Virgin has a distance based award chart for travel on Delta:

There are still some domestic bargains, though Delta often blocks partner award space within 3 weeks of a flight.

For example, a flight NYC to Cleveland will be 7.5K Virgin points in main cabin with wide open availability, as long as you book 3 weeks in advance:

A zone 1 JFK-Cleveland coach ticket on 5/12 is 7.5K Virgin points (5,769 points with a 30% bonus) or 21K points (16,154 points with a 30% bonus) in first class:

Vs 21.5K in main cabin with Delta miles or 31K in first class with Delta miles:

A zone 1 flight from Cleveland, Detroit, or Pittsburgh to NYC is 7.5K Virgin points in economy and 21K in first class.
A zone 2 flight from Atlanta to NYC will is 11K Virgin points in economy and 41.5K in first class.
A zone 3 flight from Miami to NYC is 16.5K Virgin points in economy and 59.5K in first class.
A zone 4 flight from Denver to NYC is 18.5K Virgin points in economy and 66.5K in first class.
A zone 5 flight from LA to NYC is 22K Virgin points in economy and 70K in first class.
A zone 6 flight from NYC to Lima is 35K Virgin points in economy and 80K in first class.
A zone 7 flight from NYC to Buenos Aires is 44K Virgin points in economy and 105K in first class.
A zone 8 flight from NYC to Tel Aviv is 49.5K Virgin points in economy and 130K in first class.
A zone 9 flight from NYC to Tokyo is 65.5K Virgin points in economy and 165K in first class.

Infant lap child awards on international flights are a bargain. While Delta charges 10% of the paid fare, which can be astronomical on one-way flights, Virgin charges just 1,000 points in coach or 5,000 points in business class each way:

Cancelations and changes officially cost $50, but are capped at the taxes paid, so are just $5.60 for a domestic one-way.

Flying on ITA:

Fly on ITA between the US and Rome for 75K points (57,692 with a 30% bonus):

Flying on Air New Zealand:

You can fly on Air New Zealand between Australia or Pacific Islands and New Zealand for 15K points (11,538 with a 30% bonus) in business class, between Asia and New Zealand for 40K points (30,769 with a 30% bonus) in business class, between Hawaii and New Zealand for 45K points (34,615 with a 30% bonus) in business class, and between the US48 and New Zealand for 62.5K points (48,077 with a 30% bonus) in business class with no fuel surcharges.

ANA is an incredible Japanese airline with great first class suites that have very comfortable beds and amazing service.

Resuming operations in the wake of the Iranian attack are much easier for European carriers, as they can double crew a flight or make a technical stop where crew can be housed outside of Israel. North American carriers are going to struggle to resume flights until they are comfortable housing them in Israel once again.

By law, all flights that are canceled or have a major schedule change are fully refundable to your original payment method.

No airlines are covering expenses for new flights that you purchase on your own, so always ask your airline for rebooking options before buying tickets for another flight.

The Jewish holiday of Pesach begins tonight and runs through April 30th. Site updates will resume on May 1st.

It hasn’t been an easy time for the Jewish people. On Simchas Torah, the culmination of the last major Jewish holiday 6 months ago, we saw the most deadly day for Jews since the Holocaust.

And before any of the 1,200+ murdered Jews were buried, virulently anti-Semitic protests popped up around the world’s major cities and college campuses. Social media trolls have continually attacked Jewish accounts from day 1. We have gone from trauma to trauma.

I would love to know if these commenters are real people or bots paid for by a foreign actor.

There were calls for a ceasefire even before Israel responded. That ignored the reality that there already had been a ceasefire on 10/6. Yes, we care about all human lives. But Israel has a sovereign obligation to eradicate such evil, the likes of which the world has never seen before, from its borders.

My youngest brother just came home from Columbia University, where he is a first year law student. You can imagine how happy he is to be away from the horrific anti-Semitic protests targeting Jewish students that have been going on there since October 7th, where Chabad had to hire security staff just to get students to and from the Passover Seders safely.

Scary times indeed.

In my Shul this past week, I spoke about the original Shabbas Hagadol, when the firstborn Egyptians fought a bloody civil war for the Jews to be released from slavery. Sure, it was for self-serving reasons, so that they wouldn’t die in a plague. But it still represented the strongest faction of one of the most corrupt societies in history taking up arms to protect Jews.

That is darkness being transformed into light.

I tied that together with the hundreds of missiles and drones fired from Iran that very same week, 99% of which were brought down by Israel and allies ranging from the US to the UK and from Jordan to Saudi Arabia.

Jordan and Saudi Arabia? Countries that fought bloody wars with Israel, were now protecting Israel by shooting down incoming fire from Iran?

Sure, it was for self-serving reasons, but it still represents an incredible darkness being transformed into light.

In another time, those missiles could have killed thousands, but not one person died. That is light in dark times.

3 weeks ago I spent several days in the Gaza Envelope cities. We heard stories from survivors of October 7th and put on tefilin with people who lined up at the site of the Nova music festival to wrap and pray in them for the first time in their lives. We saw endless rows of burned out cars and the bomb shelter where Aner Shapira threw out 7 grenades to protect dozens of people inside, before returning his soul to his creator when the 8th exploded in his hands.

We made a BBQ for soldiers who had just served, working to eradicate Hamas in Gaza and I had the merit to visit several army bases distributing tefilin to soldiers from our DansDeals tefilin campaign organized after October 7th. We also had shmura matzah as well as packages of Shabbos candles with chocolates and perfume for female soldiers. It was truly an emotional roller coaster of a trip, but speaking to soldiers who were so excited to receive their first ever pair of tefilin, to pray with daily, was incredibly uplifting.

In the bomb shelter that we visited near the Nova music festival site, Hersh Goldberg-Polin lost his arm and was taken captive to Gaza. The air inside the shelter felt so thick that it was to breath or stand in there for more than a few moments.

Hersh’s mother, Rachel, shares a D’var Torah that she heard from Dovid Bashevkin about the meaning of Karpas, when we dip a vegetable into salt water at the Passover Seder.

In short, Karpas represents the dipping of Joseph’s coat into goat’s blood, when his brothers wanted their father Jacob to think he was killed by an animal. That was the beginning of the Exodus story, and is in the beginning of the Seder. The darkest part, before the story of redemption and going free, when darkness is transformed into light.

Jacob would never be consoled, because consolation is only for those who mourn the dead, not for those alive. Let us pray that Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s parents can’t be consoled and have been incredible advocates for him because he too is still alive and will be reunited with them very soon, along with all of the other hostages.

Pesach is traditionally associated with celebrating our freedom along with family and guests, and I’m thrilled to be back to hosting some 2 dozen people for the Seder tonight.

We visited Hostage Square in Tel Aviv, with its endless empty seats at a Shabbos table for the hostages. I broke down crying upon seeing the high chairs for the Bibas kids. But as said by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who would have turned 122 earlier this week, the point of the Seder is to bring another guest to your Seder and not just have an extra empty chair. So find someone you can invite to your Seder and share the light!

Whether you’re enjoying Pesach at home, with family, or at a Pesach program, may it be meaningful and joyous. I know I’m looking forward to eating Shmura Matzah, drinking cups of fine wine, and spending lots of quality offline time with friends and family.

But at the same time, let us keep Eretz Yisroel and its inhabitants in our prayers, and may all of the hostages be freed, during this Festival of our Freedom, and may it be the ultimate and final Festival of our Freedom, when we will have true peace on Earth.
