[Air Canada Cancels Flights Into August] Israel Flight Change Policies And Next Bookable Flights For Major Airlines

  • Update, 5/9:
    • Air Canada confirms to DansDeals that their return to Israel will be further pushed back from the previous 7/2 scheduled resumption and says that, “We continue to closely monitor the situation, and will adjust our plans accordingly.”
    • The next scheduled Toronto-Tel Aviv flight is now 8/6 and Tel Aviv-Toronto is now 8/7. This flight will only operate 3 times weekly through 10/24, at which point it will increase to 6 weekly flights.
    • The next scheduled Montreal-Tel Aviv flight is now 8/12, and Tel Aviv-Montreal is now 8/13. This flight will only operate once weekly through 10/21, at which point it will be suspended for the winter season.
    • Affected customers on Air Canada’s flights to/from/via Tel Aviv between now and August 5th, 2024, will be able to rebook to alternate flights if available, or obtain a full refund.
    • DansDeals has reached out to Delta to see if they are still planning to return to Tel Aviv on 6/7, but the airline has not yet responded to our request.
  • Update, 5/8 at 2pm ET:
    • United’s media team confirms with DansDeals that United early flight 84 from Newark-Tel Aviv is now canceled through 6/5 and return flight 85 is now canceled through 6/6. United late flight 90 from Newark-Tel Aviv is now canceled through 6/19 and return flight 91 is now canceled through 6/20. These flight cancelations will be processed in the coming days.
    • Notably, the 6/6 scheduled return date is 1 day earlier than Delta currently plans to return to Israel. If Delta sticks to their 6/7 scheduled return date, I’d expect United to stick to this date as well, but if either airline pushes back, the other may match.

    • United statement: “We are canceling our daily Tel Aviv flight through June 5 as we continue to evaluate our next steps. We continue to closely monitor the situation and will make decisions on upcoming flights with a focus on the safety of our customers and crews.“

  • Update, 5/8 at 10am ET:
    • As we speculated yesterday, United has now confirmed in a memo to Israeli travel agents that United will indeed cancel all flights from Newark to Tel Aviv through 5/31 and from Tel Aviv to Newark through 6/1.
    • These flight cancelations will be processed in the coming days and due to the end of the United travel waiver, you have to wait until that happens before United will offer a refund or reaccommodate you with other options.
    • This is despite the United website still showing that flights to Israel starting on Friday are still on schedule, together with the usual upgrade lists. As we have said before, we find United’s pattern of last minute cancelations to be disrespectful. As noted in that post, this may be considered a deceptive practice under US law (you can complain to the DOT if affected) and in violation of Israeli law.
    • Passengers can request a refund or be rebooked within 7 days of their scheduled flight onto United flights to Athens, Dubai, or Tel Aviv with no difference in fare, but if you fly through Athens or Dubai you will have to buy another ticket to/from Tel Aviv. Passengers can also be rebooked onto Austrian, Brussels, Lufthansa, or Swiss within 3 days of their scheduled flight with no difference in fare.
  • Update, 5/7 at 6pm ET:
    • United has suspended sales of all flights to and from Tel Aviv for the entire month of May. Typically, this is a precursor to canceling flights, though flights from 5/10-5/31 are not yet officially canceled. The next available flights for sale from Newark to Tel Aviv are currently UA84 and UA90 on 6/1 and the next available flights for sale from Tel Aviv to Newark are currently UA85 and UA91 on 6/2.
    • When contacted today after the flight sale suspension, United told DansDeals that they have no updates to share since what they shared with us on May 1st, which was “Our daily flight from Newark to Tel Aviv remains canceled through May 9 as we complete our safety assessment. We continue to closely monitor the situation and will make decisions on all upcoming flights with a focus on the safety of our customers and crews.”
    • Due to the closure of Meron for Lag B’omer, El Al will allow tickets purchased by May 6th for departures from May 19-23 to be converted into a voucher.
  • Update, 5/1:
    • United early flight 84 from Newark-Tel Aviv is now canceled through 5/9 and return flight 85 is now canceled through 5/10. United late flight 90 from Newark-Tel Aviv is now canceled through 5/24 and return flight 91 is now canceled through 5/25. These flight cancelations will be processed in the coming days.
  • Update, 4/30:
    • United early flight 84 from Newark-Tel Aviv is now canceled through 5/6 and return flight 85 is now canceled through 5/7. United late flight 90 from Newark-Tel Aviv is now canceled through 5/24 and return flight 91 is now canceled through 5/25.
  • Update, 4/20:
    • United early flights 84/85 between Newark-Tel Aviv are now canceled through 5/2. United late flights 90/91 between Newark-Tel Aviv are now canceled through 5/17.
    • Air Canada has extended their flight waiver for flights booked through 7/15.
  • Update, 4/18:
    • Air Canada has officially canceled Tel Aviv service through 6/30, with the next available flight from Montreal on 7/1 and Toronto on 7/2. Change waivers have been extended through 6/30.
    • United’s next available flight for sale is now from Newark to Tel Aviv on 4/29 and Tel Aviv to Newark on 4/30. Change waivers now include changing the origin or destination of your ticket to Athens.

Wondering which airlines are offering waivers for Israel flights now? Below is an updated roundup as of 4/17.

Resuming operations in the wake of the Iranian attack are much easier for European carriers, as they can double crew a flight or make a technical stop where crew can be housed outside of Israel. North American carriers are going to struggle to resume flights until they are comfortable housing them in Israel once again.

By law, all flights that are canceled or have a major schedule change are fully refundable to your original payment method.

No airlines are covering expenses for new flights that you purchase on your own, so always ask your airline for rebooking options before buying tickets for another flight.

  • AA: Tickets booked on or before 2/11/24 for travel through 10/28/24 can be changed to travel through 11/24/24 with no difference in fare, or you can request a full refund.
    • Next bookable flight: JFK-Tel Aviv on 10/26/24.
  • Air Canada: Travel between 4/13/24-6/30/24 can be changed with no difference in fare, or you can request a full refund. Travel between 7/1/24-7/15/24 can be changed with no difference in fare through 8/15, or you can request a full refund.
    • Next bookable flight: Toronto-Tel Aviv on 8/6/24. Montreal-Tel Aviv on 8/12/24.
  • Air France: Travel waiver has ended.
    • Next bookable flight: Flights operational.
  • Austrian: Travel waiver has ended.
    • Next bookable flight: Flights operational.
  • BA: Travel waiver has ended.
    • Next bookable flight: Flights operational. BA has resumed flying between London-Tel Aviv, but on a short-haul A320/321 with Euro-business class seating. With this downgrade, full meals will not be offered in economy. Additionally, the flight from London to Tel Aviv will make a 45 minute operational stop in Larnaca, where it will switch crew, so that crew don’t need to leave the plane in Tel Aviv. Passengers won’t need to leave the plane in Larnaca. The flight from Tel Aviv to London will operate nonstop. This arrangement will run through at least 6/30/24. Passengers can request a refund if they don’t want to take this flight. BA also announced that effective 3/30/25, passengers will only receive tier points for short-haul flights on this route, for the lowest fare class that means a drop from 20 tier points to 10 tier points.
  • Brussels: Travel waiver has ended.
    • Next bookable flight: Flights operational.
  • Delta: Travel waiver has ended. Contact the airline to discuss options or request a refund. You can now be rebooked onto El Al, but you may have to ask for a manager to approve that option.
  • El Al: Travel between 4/13/24-5/4/24 can be converted into a voucher for future travel by anyone, or can be changed to travel through 5/4/24 within the same geographic area with no difference in fare. Travel between 10/29/23-5/4/24 can be converted into a voucher for future travel by anyone, but flight changes are subject to difference in fare.
  • Emirates: Travel waiver has ended. Contact the airline to discuss options or request a refund.
    • Next bookable flight: Dubai-Tel Aviv on 10/27/24.
  • Finnair: All flights canceled through 10/29/24, with limited rerouting options or you can request a full refund.
    • Next bookable flight: All flights canceled through end of scheduling.
  • Iberia: Tickets booked on or before 4/14/24 for travel between 10/7/23-4/30/24 can be changed to travel through 5/31 with no difference in fare, or you can fly to Athens, Cairo, or request a full refund.
    • Next bookable flight: Flights operational.
  • ITA: Travel waiver has ended.
    • Next bookable flight: Flights operational.
  • KLM: Tickets booked on or before 4/12/24 for travel between 4/12/24-4/22/24 can be changed to travel through 4/29/24 with no difference in fare, or you can switch TLV for Athens, or you can request a full refund.

How to acquire Qatar Avios

Avios credit cards:

Transfer points from banks into Avios:

  • American Express Membership Rewards points transfer instantly directly into Qatar Avios at a 1:1 ratio. There was a 30% bonus in August 2023 and a 40% bonus in May 2022, we expect a bonus to come later this year.
  • Citi ThankYou Points transfer instantly directly into Qatar Avios at a 1:1 ratio. Currently, there is a 30% bonus for transfers.
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer instantly into British Airways Avios at a 1:1 ratio. There was a 30% bonus in September 2023, we expect a bonus to come later this year.
  • Capital One points transfer instantly into British Airways Avios at a 1:1 ratio. There was a 30% bonus in November 2022.
  • Marriott points transfer within a few days into British Airways Avios at a 60K:25K ratio.

Combine Avios

While Chase and Capital One don’t transfer to Qatar, you can still transfer to British Airways Avios and then to Qatar.

You will need to open a British Airways Avios account and a Qatar Avios account and then link your two accounts together.

You can combine Avios between BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Qatar on the BA site here.

Or you can combine Avios between BA and Qatar on the Qatar site here.

 

Booking with Qatar Avios

In order to book awards, you must log in to Qatar and then return to the homepage to book online. In most cases, the homepage search is now a much better search engine, than using the other award search page.

Once you are logged in, you will see the option on the homepage to “Book an award flight:”

 

 

Frustratingly, some routes, like Cleveland-NYC, won’t show up via the award search. You can search for availability on the BA site and then call Qatar to book it at 800-988-6128.

You can fly on AA on short-haul flights like NYC-Cleveland, Detroit, Montreal, Pittsburgh, or Toronto for 6,000 Qatar Avios in coach or 12,500 Qatar Avios in business class. With BA that would be 8,250 in coach or 16.5K in business.

You can fly on AA between NYC and Miami for 9,000 Avios in coach or 16,500 Avios in business class. With BA that would be 11K in coach or 20.5K in business.

 

A JetBlue flight from NYC to Miami is just 8.5K Qatar Avios:

 

While British Airways Avios, you’ll pay a fortune in fuel surcharges to fly overseas on American, a business class ticket from JFK to London will set you back 62K Avios + $1,002:

 

But you can save a ton by booking with Qatar Avios, the same business class ticket on AA will be 62K Avios + $237:

JetBlue Continues To Slash And Reconfigure Route Network

2 months ago, JetBlue announced the end of service to Baltimore, Kansas City, 5 routes from Fort Lauderdale, 8 routes from Los Angeles, and several other cuts.

That came after a costly failed merger effort with Spirit, the end of the Northeast Alliance with American, and corporate activist/raider Carl Icahn gaining board seats at JetBlue.

Via @xJonNYC, more cuts are coming as the airline tries to survive financial headwinds:

  • LaGuardia to/from Atlanta, Fort Myers, Nassau, New Orleans, Tampa will be eliminated effective 10/27.
  • LaGuardia to/from Boston, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando will see reduced service effective 10/27.
  • Newark to/from Los Angeles will be eliminated effective 10/27.
  • Orlando to/from Los Angeles will be eliminated effective 10/27.
  • Service to Puerto Vallarta will end effective 6/12
  • Boston to/from London/LGW will go from year-round service to being suspended for the winter season effective 9/30
  • JFK to/from London/LGW will go from year-round service to being suspended for the winter season effective 10/27
  • JFK to/from Paris will go from year-round twice daily service to once daily service for the winter season effective 10/27

There are additions as well:

  • JetBlue will add service between JFK and S. Vincent and Bonaire this fall.
  • JFK to/from Vancouver will get daily MINT service year-round effective 7/21.
  • JFK to/from San Juan will get daily MINT service year-round effective 7/22.
  • Fort Lauderdale to/from Phoenix will get daily MINT service for the winter season effective 10/25.
  • Boston to/from Phoenix will get twice daily MINT service for the winter season effective 10/27.
  • JFK to/from Phoenix will get daily MINT service for the winter season effective 10/27.
  • Fort Lauderdale to/from Las Vegas will get twice daily MINT service for the winter season effective 10/27.
  • San Juan will see new nonstop service starting this fall between San Juan and Cancun, Medellin, Providence, Santiago/STI, S. Croix, and Westchester County.

On Sunday, I read about an incident on American flight 4447 on the DansDeals Forums that seemed too strange to be true. A veteran poster alleged that his brother was kicked off of an American Airlines flight from Cleveland due to being visibly Jewish.

People often send me stories to write about and I’ve reported on many over the years, though I don’t cover the majority of them. However, this one seemed like it was worth investigating.

Over the past 2 days I’ve spoken with 2 passengers who were removed from the flight, Reuven (Reuvi) Scheinerman and Yehudah Roffman. Reuvi is a minor, so I also spoke with Reuvi’s father Motti.

Usually, I stick to stories that have video or at least audio evidence, as otherwise it is only a “he said, she said” situation. In this case, the 2 yeshiva students only had kosher flip phones (non-smartphones with only calling and SMS capabilities, which is very common among yeshiva students), so this story is based on their allegations and what Reuvi discussed with his father that evening. Despite the lack of video, I found their testimonies to be credible and compelling.

Reuvi Scheinerman is removed from American flight 4447

On Sunday, May 5th, 17 year old Reuvi Scheinerman was flying back to his yeshiva in Connecticut after Pesach break. There are no nonstop flights between Cleveland and Hartford, so his father booked him on an American flight via Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport.

Cleveland’s TSA lines can run very long these days, especially if you don’t have PreCheck and CLEAR. Reuvi doesn’t drive and has no state ID, which isn’t required if you’re under 18 years old. But that also means he can’t get PreCheck or CLEAR.

American offers unaccompanied minor services for 15-17 year olds, but doesn’t require it. Reuvi is in 11th grade and has flown on his own since 9th grade without incident. This very shy boy was dressed in the yeshiva uniform: a white dress shirt, black pants, suit jacket, and a black fedora. He had the yeshiva-required kosher flip phone, without the ability to record what happened.

He was thankful to make it through security and board the plane just a few minutes before boarding was scheduled to end for AA flight 4447, an Embraer E175 operated by Republic Airways for American Airlines. He stopped to help a thankful passenger put their bag in the overhead compartment and then went straight to his window seat in 23A, the very last row of the plane. He took his seat and was happy to see that 23B was empty as boarding concluded.

That joy would be short-lived. The AA gate agent came over to him, tapped on his shoulder, and told him to grab his carry-on bag and follow him off the plane. The shy boy complied without making a scene, as his father always told him how important it is for Jews to make a Kiddush Hashem. When he was back at the gate he was told to wait while the gate agent closed the doors and sent the flight off. He asked what happened, to which the gate agent replied that he should know what he did wrong. But he had no clue.

Back at the gate he met 21 year old Yehudah Roffman for the first time, who had also been ordered off of the flight.

Yehudah is also a yeshiva student and was dressed in the same standard yeshiva uniform: black pants, suit jacket, and a black fedora. He was returning to NYC after spending Pesech break in Cleveland and also had the kosher flip phone instead of a modern smartphone.

Reuvi lives in an older Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in the city of Cleveland Heights, while Yehudah lives in a newer Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in the city of University Heights, and their paths hadn’t previously crossed.

Yehudah was originally booked on American flight 4305 from Cleveland to JFK, but along with several other passengers, missed that flight due to the long security lines. He was rebooked to LaGuardia via Reagan National, departing about 90 minutes later.

Yehudah was waiting in the gate area in Cleveland for flight 4447 to Reagan National and noticed before boarding that the tail of the plane appeared to be dented. He called his mother with his concerns, and she told him to let a flight attendant know what he’d seen. When he boarded, he asked the flight attendant if they noticed the dent in the tail, and sat down in 10D, an aisle seat in the 3rd row of the Main Cabin Extra section. He still felt uneasy, so when the gate agent was onboard he went over and once again asked if they noticed the dent on the tail, and sat back down.

Having not received any validation or even response to his previous inquiries and still feeling extremely uneasy, Yehudah noticed the pilot talking to the gate agent at the front of the plane, and asked about the dented tail. The pilot told him to sit down, but Yehudah wanted reassurance that it had been noticed and inspected, so he asked again, and the pilot told him to sit down. Yehudah asked the pilot if he was listening to his concerns, and the pilot told him for a 3rd time to take his seat. After the gate agent said that federal law required that he listen to crew instructions and that he had to take his seat, Yehudah returned to his seat.

It’s unclear why his concerns were not properly addressed. Perhaps they didn’t want a situation where passengers all ask to be deboarded due to problems with the left phalange? The plane’s tail number is N123HQ and it appears to have operated many flights successfully since AA4447.

5 mintues later, the gate agent went to 10D and told Yehudah to take his carry-ons and leave the plane.

An elderly couple that also missed their flight to JFK and had been rebooked with Yehudah to LaGuardia via Reagan National expressed their surprise as Yehudah was led off the plane.

The crew then pointed out Reuvi in the back and the gate agent walked 13 rows back and told 17 year old Reuvi that he was being ordered to leave the flight as well, despite having zero interaction with Yehudah or any cabin crew.

There were no other visibly religious Jews on the flight.

Questions loomed as to why Reuvi was removed

Back at the podium, Reuvi and Yehudah met each other for the first time. The gate agent sent the plane off just 6 minutes past its scheduled departure time, and it arrived on time into Reagan National.

The gate agent addressed both of them and said, “you know what you did.” The agent then told them that they would be blacklisted from American Airlines, and should find another airline to take them to NYC.

Yehudah never did receive an explanation for what he described was a dent on the plane’s tail. In an era of serious concerns about the safety of planes, that seems quite unfair.

When Reuvi asked the gate agent why he was removed, the response was to please wait while the gate agent figured things out.

Reuvi then gathered to courage to ask point-blank, “Is this anti-Semitism? Why was I removed from this flight?”

The gate agent responded that the pilot asked that he be removed. Reuvi asked for the pilot’s name, but the gate agent wouldn’t tell him that information.

When he asked again what he did wrong, the gate agent said they didn’t know, but when the pilot says he doesn’t want you on his flight, the gate agent has to listen.

While Reuvi is a minor, at no point did American contact Reuvi’s parents to let them know that they had removed him from the flight.

At this point, the gate agent became more compassionate and said they wouldn’t be blacklisted and they were able to be rebooked on American the following day.

Finding another way to Connecticut and New York

Yehudah had no interest in stepping foot onto another American plane, and said he would rent a car. He also felt bad, and offered to drive Reuvi to his Yeshiva in Connecticut and get him there on time for classes to begin Monday morning.

Reuvi called his parents and related that he had been kicked off the flight, despite doing nothing wrong. They said they would pick him up from the airport, but he told them about Yehudah Roffman’s offer. Reuvi’s mother works as a secretary at a religious school in Cleveland that the Roffman children went to and was familiar with the family, so his parents agreed to this arrangement. That kind of kindness and trust is common in the world of religious Jews.

They took the shuttle to the rental car facility, Yehudah rented a car, and they drove through the night to Reuvi’s yeshiva in Connecticut, arriving at 6am, before Yehudah drove to his yeshiva in Far Rockaway, NY.

Ejecting a minor without informing the parents

I also spoke with Reuvi’s father, Motti Scheinerman.

He was shocked at the open anti-Semitism of his son being thrown off the flight, despite doing nothing wrong or even being accused of anything he specifically did that was wrong.

He was even more shocked that American didn’t even think to let the parents of a minor know that they were removing him off of the last flight of the day. Is that really airline protocol?

Collective punishment: Lufthansa Déjà vu

This is a story that’s eerily reminiscent of the infamous May 2022 Lufthansa flight, when all visibly religious Jews on that flight were denied boarding their connecting flight because of a couple Jews on the originating flight failing to comply with mask requirements.

A Lufthansa supervisor in Frankfurt was caught on camera admitting that “Jewish people who were the mess, who made the problems, and everyone had to pay for a couple.”

The airline wound up settling the case for nearly $3 million to avoid having it go to court.

Apparently, American Airlines has a cabin crew that also practices collective punishment against visibly religious Jews.

It should have been obvious that despite their similar garb, there was zero interaction between Reuvi and Yehudah. Yehudah boarded early while Reuvi boarded just before boarding was ending. They were seated 13 rows apart and their tickets had no connection to one another. They lived in different cities and were strangers to one another. There should have been no reason to confuse the 2 or lump them together. And yet, the pilot on flight 4447 did exactly that in tossing them off the flight, seemingly because they both looked visibly Jewish.

Scary times for visibly religious Jews

Is this what we have come to in 2024?

Do we need to start flying with body cams? I don’t think we’re there yet, but at the very least, if you do have a smartphone, you should start recording at the first hint of something happening. If you feel uncomfortable holding it up to someone’s face, you can just have it record while in your hand to pick up audio and some video. If you are forced to delete pictures or video, you can typically recover it from your phone’s trash folder.

My brother is a first year Columbia Law Student, where there have been virulently anti-Semitic and dangerous protests. He remains at home, where he has finished this year’s studies remotely and is taking finals remotely, as is required by the school.

There was a rise in anti-Semitism before October 7th, but the most deadly day for Jews since the Holocaust seems to have awoken a whole new level of hatred against Jews.

It is wrong and deeply concerning that today one could be targeted or mistreated just for being visibly Jewish.

These are highly uncomfortable and scary times indeed for visibly religious Jews.

DansDeals reached out to American Airlines yesterday for comment, and while we accepted an off the record phone call from the airline’s media team, we haven’t received an official statement about this incident. This post will be updated if we receive an official statement from the airline.

[Updated With Additional Information From JetBlue] After In-Flight Incident, JetBlue Apologizes And Changes Crewmember Pin Policy

Update: 5/7: After asking several follow-up questions, JetBlue has shared a few more updates with DansDeals:

  1. Mr. Faust’s flight was refunded in full. As policy, the airline doesn’t comment on compensation, but Jetblue is “working to ensure Mr. Faust remains a loyal JetBlue customer.”
  2. As far as the flight attendant who made the false report’s employment is concerned, “the investigation is ongoing, and we must comply with the process including working with our crewmembers’ unions, but we are doing all we can to expedite that process.” JetBlue says that after the investigation, they may be able to provide DansDeals with additional information, pending approval from their legal department which will depend on privacy laws that vary based on the state of their employment.
  3. “JetBlue has zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind, and our 25,000 crewmembers help carry millions of customers every year from all walks of life with no issues. We also feel strongly that swiftly closing the gap in our pin policy will help reduce the chance of conflict in our operation.”
  4. Here are the details of JetBlue’s new pin policy:
    • “Crewmembers can wear up to two JetBlue-issued pins or buttons at a time. However, in addition to JetBlue-issued pins:
    • Flag pins may be worn and count towards the two allowed pins. The pins must be flags of states, countries, or territories served by JetBlue-operated flights.
    • First responder pins (e.g. law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics) may be worn and count towards the two allowed pins.
    • For represented crewmembers, one pin may be from their union and counts towards the two pin allowance.
    • Inflight crewmembers working in Mint or on transatlantic flights have additional pin specifications.
    • Jewelry, accessories, and apparel that display political messages, political symbols, or that advocate positions not sponsored by JetBlue are not allowed.”

Overall, I’m impressed by JetBlue’s responsiveness to this incident, but I do hope that action is taken after investigating the incident and that the airline can share those updates. DansDeals reached out to American, Delta, and United yesterday asking about their current flight attendant pin policies, but none of those airlines responded to our request for comment.

This incident, along with the incident on American where a passenger was ejected for being visibly Jewish, are scary. It sure seems like the pendulum of power has swung too far in favor of a single member of the flight crew going on a power trip. What do you think should be done to correct for that?

Last week, Paul Faust flew on JetBlue and went viral for his video on his flight experience.

In it, he noted that a flight attendant sitting right in front of him in the jump seat was wearing several pins, including a BLM pin and a free Palestine pin. He sat next to another Jewish passenger and discussed the current state of the war and protests within earshot of the flight attendant.

What bothered him was that when the flight attendant put on an apron for drink service, she moved the free Palestine pin to her apron, though not the other pins. Paul took that as a sign that it was done deliberately.

Mr. Faust went to the lead flight attendant, identified himself as a Mosaic elite member, and expressed concern about the moving of just the free Palestine pin onto the apron. He asked that it not be dealt with onboard, but to pass on the feedback after the flight that it could make passengers feel uncomfortable.

He had no interaction with the flight attendant with the pin during the flight, but after the flight she pointed him out to someone, who pulled him over for causing an in-flight disturbance, which he says didn’t happen. That person said he needed to speak to him because the pilot had phoned in about a disturbance, and the person proceeded to call the Las Vegas police department about Mr. Faust. Paul then left the airport, rather than wait for the police.

His return flight was then canceled, without notification. When he called the Mosaic line the agent read the notes that said he caused an in-flight disturbance, didn’t listen to in-flight crew instructions, which he denies, and didn’t listen to the supervisor instructions after the flight, which he admits to, though says they never identified themselves as a supervisor.

Multiple passengers on the flight confirmed Mr. Faust’s version of the story to the Daily Mail.

JetBlue later reached out to Mr. Faust for his version of the story and said it would be investigated.

I reached out to JetBlue for a statement, and they responded that due to this incident, they have now changed their previous policy, which allowed crewmembers to wear one unoffensive personal pin of their choice. Crewmembers can now only wear pins approved or issued by JetBlue. The airline notes that they have apologized to Mr. Faust and hope to serve him again in the future. They also note that after further review of the incident, they will take action against any employees that violated JetBlue policies.

“As New York’s Hometown Airline, we are proud of our long history welcoming customers of different backgrounds and faiths from around the world. JetBlue does not tolerate discriminatory conduct, and we are committed to providing a respectful and welcoming environment for all our customers and crewmembers. We are taking this matter very seriously and conducting a full investigation into our crewmembers’ actions. We will take appropriate action once our investigation is complete as a result of non-compliance with any JetBlue policies.

At JetBlue, our #1 value is safety, and it guides every decision JetBlue makes. Our crewmembers should be focused on the safety of our flights and delivering a great customer experience. We have changed our uniform policy to make clear that on board the aircraft is not the right place for crewmembers to advocate positions on certain issues or political topics. Going forward crewmembers will only be permitted to wear pins approved or issued by JetBlue.

We had previously identified that our pin policy, which had dated back many years and allowed crewmembers to wear one unoffensive personal pin of their choice, needed to be updated to reflect the current environment. In light of this incident, we urgently expedited this change. 

We have reached out to listen to Mr. Faust and offer our apologies for the breakdown in our policies during his flight. We hope with these actions we can welcome him back onto a JetBlue flight in the future.”

I know that I wouldn’t have said anything about a pin, but in this case speaking up has led to a company-wide policy change that is certainly logical in these times.

US/Canada Residents: Match Elite Status From Select Airlines To British Airways For Premium Lounge Access And Much More

Through May 7, US/Canada Residents with status on select airlines can match their status to British Airways Silver or Gold as follows:

Status will last for 6 months, but can be extended to the end of the next membership year if you fly on 2 paid transatlantic flights marketed by British Airways in business or first class and flying on AA, BA, Finnair, or Iberia within the 6 months period. The flight must depart from North America. HFP reports that 1 round-trip flight will qualify for this requirement and that upon qualifying for Gold for the rest of the year, you would receive a soft landing to Silver status for another year and then Bronze status for a subsequent year if you don’t requalify.

British Airways Silver comes with OneWorld Sapphire status. While AA/Alaska OneWorld Sapphire elites don’t receive lounge benefits on domestic flights, BA OneWorld Sapphire elites do and can access Alaska and AA lounges, including business class lounges, AA flagship lounges, business class checkin, and the JFK Greenwich lounge, even when flying on domestic AA or Alaska flights. You’ll also earn 50% bonus Avios on flights, free seat selection, 2 free 70 pound bags, get priority boarding, priority baggage handling, and more.

British Airways Gold comes with OneWorld Emerald status. While AA/Alaska OneWorld Emerald elites don’t receive lounge benefits on domestic flights, BA OneWorld Emerald elites do and can access Alaska and AA lounges, including first class lounges, arrivals lounges, first class checkin, and the JFK Soho lounge, even when flying on domestic AA or Alaska flights. You’ll also earn 100% bonus Avios on flights, free seat selection, 2 free 70 pound bags, get priority boarding, priority baggage handling, expedited security, expanded Avios seat availability, and more.

Notably, you can’t match from AA or Alaska to BA, as they are both part of OneWorld. You can match Delta or United via a status match challenge, or you can match to Virgin Atlantic if you haven’t had status with them in the past and have an upcoming Virgin premium cabin flight booked with cash or miles.
