A Lookback At DansDeals Seminars; Secret Secrets Are No Fun?

Thursday, September 15th, 2016

I’ve been blogging about credit cards and miles since 2004 and in that time-frame I’ve come across all kinds of juicy tricks and secrets. The key is figuring out the right balance between what to share and what to hold close to your chest.

Price mistakes often die very quickly, so there’s no reason not to share those. They’ll be corrected within a short period of time regardless of whether I publish it or not.

Other tricks are a judgement call. I try to get the balance correct, though I have made errors. Will the trick die prematurely if published broadly or will it die anyway? Should they be shared in forums and is it possible to contain them only there?

After 8 years of blogging I came to the conclusion that perhaps an in-person seminar would be the best compromise. In it I could try to bring beginners up to speed and share all sorts of tricks that I hesitated to share online. My only request from attendees was that they keep things discussed in the seminars offline. A bit naive perhaps, but worth a shot I figured.

Between 2012-2015 I ran 15 DansDeals seminars which were attended by some 5,000 people with every cent of the tens of thousands of dollars from the admissions fees going to the non-profits that hosted each seminar.

DansDeals Seminar: Jerusalem

Sunday, March 8th, 2015

Thanks to everyone who came out to #DDSJlem

You guys were a great crowd and the questions asked afterward were perhaps the sharpest overall from any seminar that I’ve done.

Over $5,000 was raised for Tzevet Hatzolah of Israel from ticket sales of the event!

After 14 seminars in the US it’s time to take things to the holy land (glitches help 😉 )

The 15th DansDeals seminar will be held in Jerusalem on Motzei Shabbos, March 7th at 8:30pm.

You can purchase tickets via this link.

Please note: The seminar will be given in English only. It is designed for Americans, and while there will be some tips for non-Americans, the content is heavily targeted towards Americans.

It will be located at the Nevat Yisrael, 24 Shmuel Hanavi St. in Jerusalem, Israel.

The cost of admission is $13. Light refreshments will be served.
As with all DansDeals seminars, the entire ticket price (after credit card processing fees) will be donated to charity. Ticket sales for this seminar will benefit Tzevet Hatzolah of Israel, the organizers of this event.
You will have to designate who will be attending as tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.

-Men and Women will be seated separately for this event.
-Men and Women ages 15 and older are welcome to attend, no kids or infants please.
Recording devices and photography of the slides are not allowed so be sure to bring something to take notes with!

Schedule (subject to change):
8:00pm: Doors open. Failure to show up by 8:30pm may result in your seat being given away to someone else.  A short video presentation of Hatzolah’s work will be shown at 8:15pm.
8:30pm-9:30pm: Seminar Part 1-Credit Cards and mileage earning on a beginner to intermediate level.
9:30pm-10:45pm: Seminar Part 2-More advanced tips and tricks for mileage redemption, paid flights, hotel stays, car rentals, etc.
10:45pm: Trivia and Q&A session.

-If you are a beginner: Hopefully you will learn a lot, but I cover many subjects in a relatively short period of time. Don’t feel bad if you don’t understand many things or if you start to feel lost, feel free to stay afterward and I’ll clarify them.  Or better yet start reading the DansDeals Forums where you can learn more about anything you want to know.  There won’t be time to explain most subjects at length, so take good notes of the concepts, and read more about them after the seminar on DansDeals.com and on the DansDeals Forums

-If you are on an intermediate level: You may know of many of the concepts I talk about but you should still learn more than enough to make attending worth your time and effort.

-If you are on an expert level: You probably already know most or all of what I’m going to talk about so feel free to attend, but don’t expect 2.5 hours of new information, it may be a complete waste of your time.  Some experts have told me that it was worthwhile, others have said it was not, I guess it depends on what kind of expert you are :)

Seating is limited so book your ticket first and then tell your friends ;)

The Best Day Of The Week For A DansDeals Seminar In Jerusalem?

Thursday, February 5th, 2015

Thanks to the recent USAirways business saver glitches as well as some family events I’ll be headed back to Israel for the first time since 2010.

Only seems fair to make a DansDeals Seminar while there, but first, a day of the week needs to be chosen.

Please vote only if you will be able to attend!

Thanks Monsey!

Thursday, June 26th, 2014

Thanks to everyone who organized the Monsey seminar and thanks to the 400 people who came out on a rainy night to attend.

Your feedback is always appreciated. So far I heard from one of the mileage bloggers in attendance that he would have used more arrows and circles if it were his presentation 😉

I love talking miles but after giving 3 seminars in a week it’s time for a break!

Normal DansDeals.com posting will resume on Friday.

DansDeals Seminar: Five Towns

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

Reminder: The Five Towns seminar is tonight!

Don’t have a ticket? You can purchase one at the door starting at 8pm on a first-come, first-served basis if there is space.  No “standby” attendees have been turned away from the previous 7 seminars.

If you are holding a ticket remember to show up before 8pm so that your seat isn’t given away to a standby attendee.

See ya’ tonight!

Update: It may have taken a week to give away 120 seats for free for my first seminar in Crown Heights some 18 months ago but all 500 seats for this seminar have now sold out in just 3 hours!
I sure hope everyone read all of the info below so that they’re not too disappointed…

Due to the Teaneck seminar selling out so quickly I’m adding another NYC area seminar for the night afterward!

The 8th DansDeals seminar will be on Wednesday night, January 8th at 8pm.

In a very short time, the Levi Yitzchak Family Center and Library has become an integral part of our local Jewish Community. The Library is always buzzing with visitors both children and adults. It is great place to find an ever-growing array of Jewish books on a wide range of topics. Furthermore, the programs and school trips facilitate an even greater connection within the Community. The Levi Yitzchak Library has grown to become a go-to place for learning and fun for different ages, all in the merit of a beautiful young boy who loved learning Torah.  Special thanks to Gary Wallin Music and Entertainment for providing equipment for the event and to Gourmet Glatt Emporium for providing light refreshments for the event.

You will have to designate who will be attending as tickets are non-transferable.

Special thanks to Rabbi Gancz of the WCC, Jason Zuchowski, and Yosef Greenberger of Shir Chodosh for all of their help.

I hope everyone had a good time-I always appreciate your feedback!

Update #3: 200 seats booked and we are sold out!

Update #2: The organizer and I have decided to increase the ticket sales to 200 to allow for some probable no-shows.  There are now 15 seats for sale-go grab ’em!

Update: 1 person has cancelled, you can grab his seat via the link! Gone!

I’m excited to head out to the Windy City this week and give a DansDeals seminar this Thursday evening with the full ticket price going directly to benefit The Kehillah Jewish Education Fund, a local charity that is organizing the event.

The 185 seats sold out in just two days!

The Blackhawks apparently didn’t get the memo though and scheduled their 4th Conference Finals game during the seminar.  If you would like to cancel your ticket so that it can be resold to someone else just send an email to me (dan at dansdeals.com) and I’ll get it sorted out.

Have a question or topic you would like for me to cover or answer during the seminar?

I won’t be able to answer everyone’s questions at the seminar, but if you want your voice heard just head onto Twitter and use the hashtag #AskDD

For example you can tweet,

Would love to know which card is the best to start with for a beginner? #AskDD

So Long To The 08701

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

Thanks again to the Lakewood community for their hospitality.  It was my first time visiting and it’s definitely quite a unique community…seeing beis medresh after beis medresh jam packed is indeed an incredible sight.  Hearing from people who have the ability to sustain themselves while continuing to study Torah thanks to following DansDeals was just awesome.   Everywhere I turned people were extremely friendly, almost made me feel like I was back home in the midwest.

I made several adjustments with last night’s DansDeals Seminar and Q&A session and would love to hear your feedback.  Feel free to sound off on both the good and bad in the comments.  For those who attended both the Brooklyn and Lakewood seminars I definitely would like to hear what you thought as well.  Definitely a very different crowd with very different questions…but I had a great time doing each of the seminars.

I head back home tomorrow, but for now I’m enjoying my free room at The Plaza thanks to my lifetime Fairmont Platinum status.  I’ll be back home tomorrow evening and will get back onto my normal posting schedule then.

I will be making a DansDeals seminar in Brooklyn, NY and Lakewood, NJ.

The Brooklyn event will be at the Bais Yaakov of Boro Park on Sunday, May 5th. The address is 1371 46th St, Brooklyn, NY 11219.

The Lakewood event will be at Park Terrace on Tuesday, May 7th. The address is 200 Park Ave, Lakewood, NJ 08701.

-Both events will start promptly at 8pm.
-The duration of the events will vary based on audience questions, but should run for approximately 3 hours.
-Men and Women ages 15 and older are welcome to attend and there will be Mechitza seating.
-Recording devices will not be allowed so be sure to bring something along to take notes with.

The seminar will be similar to the one I gave last year in Crown Heights, but with changes for developments over the past year. If you attended last year’s seminar or if you are already an advanced mileage junkie you will probably be bored.
It will once again be on a beginner to intermediate level but even advanced mileage junkies will learn a thing or 2. Topics covered will include:
-Credit cards and credit scores.
-Tips, tricks, and hacks for award tickets.
-Tricks to help find cheap airfare, hotels, and car rentals.
-A Q&A session.
-Trivia questions with prizes.

Seating is limited and last year’s event sold out in just a few days so don’t procrastinate!

You can reserve a seat at the event for a $5 suggested donation that will go entirely to the local Brooklyn and Lakewood based 501c3 charities that are organizing the events. You must reserve the seat for a specific person and seats will be non-transferable and non-refundable.

Special thanks to DDF members plainbachur, DovtheBear, and the Lakewood South Side Lunch ‘N Learn program for their help with organizing these events.

Hope to see you there!

1 Seminar Down, 1 To Go!

Monday, May 6th, 2013

Last night in Brooklyn I had a great time meeting so many new people.  I’ll admit to being completely bewildered by some of the paparazzi-like picture taking (holding up your camera phone to my face while talking to me?), but to each their own I guess…I’m just a regular guy folks!

There was a sold out, over-capacity crowd of about 450 people that packed the room.  I’ve heard feedback via email and on DDF from beginners, intermediates, and advanced mileage junkies. People from all levels have told me that they learned a lot.  It’s a tough balancing act to try to keep everyone happy, but I hope I was able to do that.

Many of the beginners felt I didn’t dedicate enough time to the second half of the presentation and that I switched gears far too quickly from a beginner level to a far more advanced level.

It’s fair criticism.  It’s tough to keep the interest of the entire crowd and it’s probably impossible to impart the tips and tricks from the second half in such a short period of time to someone who is a novice.  The intention was more to show what can be done and hopefully people now understand just how much there is to learn and will endeavor to dig deeper on places like the DansDeals Forums.  Don’t just post questions there but search for topics there where many of the concepts I talked about last night are discussed in detail.  With hundreds of thousands of posts it can be overwhelming, but there’s a ton of great info there.

I will however definitely try to dedicate some more time on the latter slides tomorrow night.  But the 2nd half will probably still be more enjoyable for advanced folks than beginners.

I think the best feedback is from those that said I summarized 2 years worth of reading in 2 hours.  That’s exactly what I was trying to accomplish.

The Lakewood seminar is sold out with over 275 confirmed reservations, but again you are welcome to show up without a reservation and if there is space remaining we will make a waitlist in the order you arrive and will try to fit you in.

Have more feedback? Loved it? Hated it? Hit the comments!

I’ll be back home late Wednesday and will resume regular site updates then.
