$350 Adults/$282 Kids Round-Trip Tickets To Israel Still Available On Very Limited Dates…If You’re Willing To Have An All Day Connection

-Earn 2-2.14 points per dollar and get free insurance for trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, lost luggage, delayed luggage, and travel accident with Chase Sapphire Preferred.

-Flights are bookable on Airfare.com

I wrote about these crazy cheap Transaero fares 3 weeks ago back when they were still selling flights with short connections to Israel. Since then Russia has bailed out the airline to ensure they can keep flying.

Those flights sold out quickly, but there are still flights with long connection times if you’re a glutton for punishment.

Airfare.com only allows free cancellation until 11:59pm on the day of purchase.

Adults tickets are $350, kids tickets are $282. Be sure to buy your infant a seat, for $280 you’ll be able to bring a carseat and not have to hold them for the trip.

From My Inbox…Why I Recommend Priceline And The Potential Pitfalls Of Booking Directly With An Airline

Tuesday, January 6th, 2015

Yisroel F. wrote to me last month,

“I booked a ticket on AA.com last night and now when I try to cancel (less than 24 hours) they are telling me I can’t cancel because they offer a hold for flights more than 7 days in advance.”

Alas he was told correct info.
Tickets booked on AA.com more than 7 days in advance can’t be cancelled as they offer a hold option that you are able to use. Because they offer the hold option they are exempt from the DoT mandate to allow refunds within 24 hours of booking.

I advised him to use Priceline the next time. Had he done so he would have been able to cancel that ticket. Priceline makes it easy to cancel tickets for flights departing from the US until 11:29pm the business day after booking. That means a ticket bought at 12:05am EST on Wednesday can be cancelled until 11:29pm EST on Thursday. A ticket bought at 12:05am EST on Friday can be cancelled until 11:29pm EST on the following Monday.

You can cancel online by just clicking through from your email confirmation to view your itinerary.

The Priceline free cancellation policy even applies within 7 days of a flight when the DoT mandate doesn’t even apply.

Jacob G wrote to me last month,

“I booked a ticket online with Turkish and I before I checked out I didn’t realize that the price doubled. I called them yup they say there is nothing to do because its non-refundable”

I asked him how and what he booked. And why he booked direct instead of with Priceline.
And he replied,

“A few hours ago. From NYC to Israel through Istanbul. I thought its better by them.”

Of course there’s no advantage to booking direct. Had he booked through Priceline he could have clicked cancel and been done with it.

Now the rule is that he deserves a refund within 24 hours. However more customer service reps of foreign carriers aren’t familiar with US laws.

I first advised him to call back, but he had no luck with that. The rep incorrectly told him that the DoT rule only applied for domestic US flight. Jacob asked me if he should dispute the charge.

Disputing a charge can be a messy affair and is really just for a last resort. Instead I told him to file a DoT complaint against Turkish and give as much detail as possible.

Within 5 days he had his refund thanks to the DoT.

All is well that ends well in that case, but life would have been easier by booking through a site like Priceline (or Orbitz for that matter, though Priceline seems to have the easiest and most generous cancel time.)

Rent A Private Jet From Westchester County To West Palm Beach Tomorrow For $1,073

Saturday, January 3rd, 2015

Update: The flight has been booked!

———————————————————————————————

JetSuite offers last-minute deals to rent out a private jet on the cheap.

Tomorrow they have a flight from HPN (White Plains/Westchester County) to PBI (West Palm Beach, FL) at 1:30pm. You can bring up to 6 passengers, so your cost per seat can be as low as $178.

If you’re looking for a return flight, there are at least 6 seats available to fly back from West Palm Beach nonstop to LaGuardia on Wednesday or Thursday for just 7.5K BA Avios per person.

There’s also a flight tomorrow from Toronto to West Palm Beach and from Westchester County to Vero Beach, FL.

WiFi and refreshments and free. A lap child under 2 is free.

The reason it’s relatively cheap is that they need to ferry the planes anyway for customers paying the big bucks so they offer deals that change daily based on where they need to ferry the planes.

If it says to wait to request that means someone else has it in their cart until the time expires as shown. It will change to sold out if they actually book it.

If you book it be sure to post a trip report with pics on DDF :D

Don’t need the whole plane? In the past DDF members have split a plane, so make a post there if you want to join in on some fun!

United Tells The Masses That They Are Overpaying For Their Tickets

Tuesday, December 30th, 2014

As everyone and their mother has emailed me, posted comments, tweeted me, started countless new DDF threads, and posted to the DansDeals Facebook group more times than I can count, United and Orbitz are suing Skiplagged.com for bringing hidden city ticketing to the masses.

It was reported on DDF well over a month ago, but for whatever reason the mainstream media decided to run with the story today. Bizarre.

Hidden-city ticketing is no secret to people in the know.  Some tickets can be 90% cheaper by just adding on an extra leg to the end of the itinerary.  I think of it like not eating the dessert course of a prix-fixe, but most airlines say that its against their terms.

I first wrote about it over 8 years ago.  Some 6 years ago I wrote about using Southwest sales to get to Florida on the cheap via hidden-city and about using JetBlue to get from LA to NYC via hidden-city.

I spend a chunk of each DansDeals seminar talking about the dangers of hidden-city ticketing as well how to search for it, work around the issues, etc.

Last year I typed up a tutorial on finding hidden-city fares and on hacking ZFV fares. And USAirways had $460 tickets to Israel via hidden-city.

There are even hidden city award tickets. In this post was an international example but in my seminars I even talk about domestic ones.  Even on first class awards you can manufacture greater availability on airlines like Cathay Pacific first class via hidden city award tickets.

Virgin America had a first class hidden city fare just a couple weeks ago.

And I’ve written lots of times about hacking nonstop fares to Tel Aviv via hidden city ticketing.

Point of the matter is that we’re in the minority. Most people have no clue that they can travel the world for free in first class by opening some credit cards.

And the real irony here is that ticketing tricks like hidden-city, nested tickets, and throwaway tickets aren’t known to the masses.  At least until now that United brought it to everyone’s attention.  Ironic how when you try to sue to keep something silent it gets more exposure than it ever had before.  Nicely done United.

So is United going to sue me next?

I’d hope not. After all I’m just using free speech telling people that these methods are out there, I didn’t design a site to search for the tickets.

Personally I’ve never used Skiplagged. The solution that I wrote about simply works better. But it will be crazy if the courts shut it down.  It could only happen because United and Orbitz have deeper pockets than the 22 year old owner of Skiplagged. Hopefully a free speech champion picks up his tab.

Fly From JFK To Toronto For 4.5K Avios Or $94…And Get 141 Pounds Of Free Luggage! Also: When Redeeming Avios For Business Pays For Itself

Friday, December 26th, 2014

Brazilian carrier TAM has announced that they will start flying nonstop between JFK and Toronto. The flight will operate once daily on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday effective 03/29/15.

It’s a tag-on flight from Sao Paulo and operated so that the 767 doesn’t just sit parked at JFK all day.  It’s a 5th freedom route that allows a foreign carrier to sell tickets on select routes between 2 other countries.  Similar to the JFK-Vancouver 777 route that is sold by Cathay Pacific.

When a foreign carrier operates a route within 1 other country, like Qantas’ JFK-Los Angeles route, it can only be booked when continuing onto Australia.   However the TAM and Cathay routes can be booked by themselves and offer some of the most comfortable seats you’ll find between the US and Canada.

It’s a route that used to be flown by TAM’s merger partner LAN, but that ended a few years ago.

TAM allows 2 free 32KG (70.5 pound) bags on all tickets from the US and Canada, so you’ll get 141 pounds of free checked luggage.

Introductory pricing on the route can be had from JFK to Toronto one-way for $94 and from Toronto to JFK for $128.  If you have 2×50 pound checked bags on other airlines that can set you back $60 each way. 2×70 pound checked bags on American would set you back $260 each way.

Those fares are bookable now on Orbitz.

TAM is a OneWorld airline, so you can use Avios for this route.  The rates are the same as for flights on American, 4.5K Avios in coach and 9K Avios in business each way.

However TAM is currently only releasing 1 coach award seat per flight.  I do expect them to release more award seats as we get closer to the start of these flights.

Want to travel with lots of bags on an award without waiting for that to happen?

You can redeem 9K Avios for a one-way business class flight on American and get 3 free 70 pound bags for a total of 210 pounds of free checked luggage.  That’s an awesome business class redemption, just 4.5K extra miles to go to a business class and from no free bags to 3 free bags!

3×50 pound bags on a coach ticket would set you back $210 each way. 3×70 pound bags on a coach ticket would set you back $510 each way!  Or use a business award to get that for free.

You can earn 50K Avios on the Chase British Airways Visa which has the annual fee waived for a limited time only.

Currently there is a 40% bonus for transferring AMEX MR points into Avios. That means that a round-trip business class redemption with 3 free bags each way will take just 13K AMEX points!

On domestic flights BA charges triple the Avios for business class.

However on international flights it’s just double the Avios, so it’s worth bearing in mind that flying in American business class comes with 3 free bags as it will often make sense to splurge for the extra 4.5K or 7.5K Avios just to get the free bags.

So the next time you use Avios to fly on a short flight to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America do it in business if you will have several checked bags.

If you’re a family consider flying 1 or 2 members in business to get 3 free bags each.  If you just want to sit together they’ll be happy to seat you all in coach and you’ll just have used the extra Avios for the free bags :D

On December 25th, 2013 I flew on the red-eye to Cleveland after giving a DansDeals Seminar in LA.

Fighting the urge to sleep on the morning of the 26th I posted a roundup of ending deals at 10am and a killer deal on Twizzlers at 10:39am.

And just before dozing off “Proisrael” made a post on DDF at 10:59am about cheap flights from Newark to Los Angeles.

Only it was much more than that. It was $25 flights to Florida, $42 flights to LA, and $82 fights to Hawaii. And they were all bookable in first class.

A blogger made a post wondering why 14,000 people had searched for JFK-LAX tickets that morning…well 47,000 clicks went through DansDeals that morning to Priceline alone and most of DansDeals traffic originates from those 2 cities…

Thousands of DansDeals readers booked vacations on the cheap. However many sat in limbo and sites like Orbitz and Priceline didn’t issue ticket numbers to most people.

Delta then went above and beyond what they had to do by honoring thousands of reservations that were unconfirmed.  Only confirmed tickets have to be honored, but out of an abundance of goodwill Delta decided to honor everyone’s reservations.  They even allowed people who missed their flight to reschedule for up to a year later!

Hilarity ensued on social media.

Pictures, videos, and stories of delayed flights due to strollers followed.

DDF member “lawboy” may have had the best luck of all.

Then again DDF legend “Something Fishy” can definitely give him a run for his money with his mind-blowing story of his first class trip to Hawaii. If you don’t follow Something Fishy’s trip reports on DDF you should. His awe-inspiring photography will leave you itching to replicate his trips.  You can find them linked to in this DDF Wiki that keeps track of trip reports posted on DDF.  And that awesome wiki is maintained by none other than Something Fishy :D

The glitch destroyed our servers which finally prompted moving DansDeals to AWS, which has been stable during the price glitches that have gone viral in 2014.

Before the 08/06/12 El Al glitch there were less than 5,000 people who followed @DansDeals on Twitter.  On 12/26/13 before the Delta glitch there were 21,700 followers. Today you can join the 44,300+ people who follow @DansDeals on twitter and you’ll get a tweet when a deal is posted on DansDeals.com!
You can even have Twitter send you a text message whenever a new deal is posted.

Where And When Are You Flying On Your Etihad Glitch Tickets?

Friday, December 26th, 2014

The Etihad fare glitch lasted far longer than I thought it would, though it does appear to be dead now.

If you are flying with kids you’re in for a treat. Etihad is a very highly rated airline and even has a nanny onboard that can help entertain your kids!

I’ve just started a thread on DDF where you can share your travel plans if you nabbed a ticket during the Etihad glitch.  There are also links for more info on destinations there as well.

Hopefully it will lead to people being able to get together for a safari trip in Johannesburg, a camel ride adventure in Abu Dhabi, or a shabbos to remember in Hong Kong.

I’ve made dozens of friendships on DDF and others have as well thanks to get-togethers that happen in NYC and in other cities all around the world.

You can signup for your own free DDF account here.

Of course you can comment here as well, but on DDF you can send private messages to others without needing to post your email address and we can organize a wiki of people’s travel dates.

Transaero Sub-$400 Round-Trip Airfares To Israel Still Bookable…

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014

Earn 2-2.14 points per dollar and get free insurance for trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, lost luggage, delayed luggage, and travel accident insurance with Chase Sapphire Preferred.
———————————————————————–

There are still sub-$400 Transaero fares available from JFK to Tel Aviv bookable on Airfare.com

Seats are very limited, especially on the flights with shorter connection times.

Airfare.com only allows free cancellation until 11:59pm on the day of purchase.

The shortest flight is with a 3:25 connection in Moscow on the outbound (16:25 total travel time) and a 4:25 connection in Moscow on the return (18:20 total travel time).

Be sure that the total travel time isn’t longer than that or else the flight may require an overnight in Moscow and you are not allowed to leave the airport without a Russian Visa.

Kids rates apply to children 2-11.

You may want to splurge to get your infant a seat as a lap child is $110 while a infant in a seat is $330.  Well worth the extra $110 each way to have a seat for your infant (bring a carseat) so that they can sleep on the plane.  Safer as well and your arms will thank you.

Wednesdays have the most availability.

For example as of the time of this posting, a flight from 02/25-03/04 has at least 9 seats available for $368 round-trip, a flight from 02/25-03/11 (Purim) has at least 5 seats available for $383 round-trip.

Other dates seem more limited.  A flight from 02/18-02/25 would only be available for 3 people.  When you search for more people than they have cheap tickets for that you’ll pay the higher price for all passengers.

Note that the $353 flight below has a 13:15 connection but the $368 flight has the shorter connections:

Bookable via Kayak

Kayak will send you to CheapOAir which will be cheaper than going to CheapOAir directly.

CheapOAironly allows 4 hours for free cancellations. After 4 hours but before 24 hours you can cancel for a penalty.

Flights have a 3:25 connection in Moscow on the outbound (16:25 total travel time) and a 4:25 connection in Moscow on the return (18:20 total travel time).

Be sure that the total travel time isn’t longer than that or else the flight may require an overnight in Moscow and you are not allowed to leave the airport without a Russian Visa.

Kids rates apply to children 2-11.

You may want to splurge to get your infant a seat as a lap child is $100 while a infant in a seat is $282.  Well worth the extra $90 each way to have a seat for your infant (bring a carseat) so that they can sleep on the plane.  Safer as well and your arms will thank you.

These are sample dates for a week stay in Tel Aviv.  Most cheap fares from JFK depart and return on Wednesdays, so you can stay for 2 or 3 weeks as well.

Sample dates for $282 kids/$352 adults round-trip from JFK-TLV:
02/04-02/11
02/25-03/04
03/04-03/11

Virgin America is currently offering 50% off Main Cabin Select and First Class fares.

It’s only valid for travel 12/19-01/02.

You need to use code (Exp: 12/14): MERRY50

A flight from JFK to Los Angeles in first class on 12/31 for example will drop with the promo code from $1,099 to $557.
A flight from JFK to San Francisco in first class on 12/31 will drop with the promo code from $1,105 to $560.

But you can actually search for a flight from NYC/All airports to Dallas and look for the flight options that will connect in Los Angeles or San Francisco.
The regular rate for that connection on 12/31 is $307 and with the promo code will be just $165.

Airlines don’t like it when you book a hidden city ticket, but nobody is going to force you to board the plane from LAX or SFO to Dallas.  Just as nobody will force you to eat dessert when you order a prix fixe dinner…

Of course luggage will be an issue, so you’ll either have to:
1. Travel with just carry-ons.
2. Ship your luggage in advance with UPS.
3. Have 1 passenger book a regular JFK-LAX flight and have the rest of the passengers book the hidden city flight. Virgin America allows 1 person to check up to 10 bags for just $25 each.

You will have to buy a regular one-way ticket back home, though you can do that with any airline and you can use miles for a one-way award.

I’ve written about hidden city tickets before. Here are some helpful links:

http://www.dansdeals.com/go/AirportList

Here are some of the dates that are valid as of 12/10 at 11:30am.  Dates will probably be snapped up quickly.
First class one-way hidden city fares from NYC to Dallas with tax:
12/22: $244 for JFK-SFO, $367 for JFK-LAX.
12/23: $244 for JFK-SFO, $240 for JFK-LAX.
12/24: $215 for JFK-SFO or JFK-LAX.
12/25: $215 for JFK-SFO
12/26: $215 for JFK-SFO or JFK-LAX.
12/28: $215 for JFK-SFO, $367 for JFK-LAX.
12/29: $215 for JFK-SFO
12/30: $215 for JFK-LAX
12/31: $165 for JFK-SFO or JFK-LAX.
01/01: $190 for JFK-LAX
01/01: $367 for JFK-SFO

Iguaçu Falls (also spelled Iguazú or Iguassu Falls) is one of the most stunning places in the world. My own amateur pictures can’t possible capture even a fraction of its grandeur, it’s truly awe-inspiring to experience in person.

???????????????????????????????

Eleanor Roosevelt had it right when she said “Poor Niagara” upon seeing it. Instead of being in middle of a concrete jungle it’s in middle of beautiful rainforest with wonderfully fresh air. It’s much bigger and far grander than Niagara Falls.

You can see it up close and personal from the Argentine side and you can view the majesty of it from the Brazilian side. Both sides have their own airport, IGU on the Brazilian and IGR on the Argentine side.  Unfortunately both Argentina and Brazil charge a $160 reciprocity fee for Americans to visit, though the visas do last for a decade.

A ticket to either airport from the US is typically well over $1,000 but can be had now for under $500.  Miles can be credited to OneWorld airlines like American and British Airways.

You’ll need a day on each side just to see the sights and more than that to get into the myriad of adventures available. There is an SPG category 5 Sheraton in the Argentine side in the national park with a view of the falls.

Search for flights into IGU on the Brazilian side for this deal.

You can use 7,500 Avios to fly from IGR to Buenos Aires/AEP on LAN, a haven for kosher food. 4,500 Avios is enough to fly on TAM from IGU to the largest city in the western Hemisphere, Sao Paulo. 7,500 Avios is enough to fly on TAM from IGU to stunning Rio de Janeiro.  Flights to AEP will need to be booked over the phone with British Airways. No fuel surcharges apply.

You can also use 25,000 Delta miles for 2 flights within Brazil or Argentina on partners Gol or Aerolineas Argentinas.  Or 12,500 United miles is enough for an intra-Brazil flight on Azul, an airline founded by David Neeleman of JetBlue fame who obviously has a favorite color.

Flights are available from JFK in January-March, from Miami in January-May, or from Los Angeles from January-July.

Sample valid dates:
-Los Angeles-IGU from 01/22-01/26 for $423
-JFK-IGU from 01/21-01/25 for $480
-Miami-IGU from 01/18-01/25 for $480

You can use Orbitz +/-3 day flex search option to help find valid dates.

You can also view lots of other valid departure dates on DDF.

JetBlue: Cleveland-Boston For $38 Round-Trip!

Tuesday, December 9th, 2014

Yes, Clevelanders you read that right. JetBlue is finally making its way to C-Town.

JetBlue is joining the low-cost carrier parade that arrived in Cleveland with the United dehubbing and is launching twice daily service from Cleveland to Boston effective 04/30/15.

As an intro rate for tickets purchased today, you can fly between Cleveland and Boston on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Satudays between 04/30-06/17 for just $19 each way!

Dave Clark, VP of JetBlue network planning said, “We consider this to be our first route in Cleveland. We’ve started with Boston. We certainly have other plans for Cleveland in mind.”

That makes it sound like Fort Lauderdale and JFK may be in the cards, though both of those have tough competition from Cleveland. United recently announced that they’re ceding the Fort Lauderdale route to Frontier and Spirit. And NYC is already served 27 times daily from Northeast Ohio.

Boston is served 4 times daily from Cleveland by United and daily by Southwest from nearby Akron/Canton. It will be interesting to watch if United fights back or raises the white flag as they did last week to Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, and Tampa. I’d guess they pull the route within a year.
