It is unknown how long this offer will last for.
The previous signup bonus offers on this card have been 40K, 50K, 60K, and a previous record high 80K points for spending $4,000 in 3 months.
Chase typically will not match Sapphire card offers if you signed up with a lower offer, but it can’t hurt to ask!
Also available is a 60,000 point offer on the Sapphire Reserve card, but you will be better off applying for this card and converting it to a Reserve card down the line.
Annual fee:
There is a $95 annual fee for the primary card and no annual fee for additional cardholders.
Signup bonus terms:
If you received your last Sapphire bonus on today’s date in 2017 or earlier, you are now eligible to earn another Sapphire bonus!
- You won’t get approved for this card if you have received a signup bonus on Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, or Sapphire card within the past 48 months. You can call Chase to find out when you last earned a bonus on those cards or you can pull up your old statements online to check when you last got a bonus.
- You won’t get approved for this card if you currently have an active Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, or Sapphire card. However you can call Chase to change those cards to a Freedom Unlimited or Freedom Flex card, wait 3-4 days, and then apply for a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ! You can keep them as Freedom cards to help build your Quinfecta or you can upgrade back again if you still want a Sapphire Reserve.
- You can apply and Chase won’t pull your credit or approve you if you are not eligible to get the card bonus.
- You will get the bonus for this card even if you are an authorized user on another person’s Sapphire card.
- If you are approved, that means you will get the bonus for this card as long as you spend $4,000 in 3 months.
5/24:
All Chase cards appear to be subject to 5/24 restrictions, meaning that you are not likely to be approved if you have been approved for 5 or more consumer credit cards in the past 24 months. Note that the Chase system automatically counts cards like authorized user cards and store cards as cards that count towards 5/24, but if you explain to Chase that those cards are merely authorized user cards or store cards they can manually approve you for a new card.
You can check your credit report for free at the federally authorized annualcreditreport.com to check how many accounts are shows as being open in the past 24 months.
Card earnings:
- 2 points per dollar on travel, including airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises, subways, trains, taxis, tolls, parking, Airbnb, Uber, etc.
- 2 points per dollar on dining.
- 5 points per dollar on Lyft spending through 3/31/22.
- 1 point per dollar elsewhere.
- There are no foreign transaction fees.
Spend Threshold:
You’ll need to spend $4,000 on this card within 3 months.
You can pay your federal taxes for a 1.96% fee. If you overpay your taxes you can request a refund or apply it to your next year’s taxes.
My local natural gas company allows me to prepay up to $1,000 on a credit card for a $1.65 flat fee. That’s a great way to earn miles and help meet a spend threshold. My electricity supplier allows me to pay with a credit card for free as long as I am enrolled in autopay.
Card benefits:
- Primary rental car CDW insurance in every country.
- Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption Insurance
- Lost Luggage Insurance
- Trip Delay Reimbursement
- Baggage Delay Reimbursement
- Travel Accident Insurance
- Purchase protection for items damaged or stolen within 120 days
Peloton Credit And Bonus Points:
Charge your Peloton membership fee to your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and you’ll automatically get $60 back through 12/31/21.
Make a Peloton purchase of $1,800+ and earn 5 points per dollar spent through 3/31/22!
Increased points value:
If you or someone in your household has a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card you can redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned from any card at a value of 1.25 cents towards paid travel.
If you or someone in your household has a Sapphire Reserve card you can redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned from any card at a value of 1.5 cents towards paid travel.
Pay yourself back:
Back in May, Chase added the ability to pay yourself back and redeem your Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Sapphire Reserve Ultimate Rewards points to offset any dining, grocery store, or home improvement purchases at a rate of 1.25 or 1.5 cents per point through 9/30. They also added select charities to the program, which you can offset your donation with points.
Chase has extended those categories through 9/30/21 and tells me that Pay Yourself Back will be a permanent feature of the Ultimate Rewards program, and that they will add more cards and categories for the program in the future. This adds a ton of value to the Ultimate Rewards program as you can buy anything from those stores, even gift cards to other stores, and make them free by redeeming points at a value of 1.25 or 1.5 cents each. The ability to get that kind of value from your points even when you’re not traveling is outstanding.
A great feature of the program is that you keep the original points that the purchase earned, even though you paid yourself back for the purchase. That means your points will be worth more than 1.25 or 1.5 cents each!
In other words, if you spend $300 on groceries or dining on Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you can use 24,000 points to offset that purchase and make it free. Plus, you’ll still earn the 600 points for groceries or dining, so you effectively used 23,400 points to offset the purchase. That means your points were actually worth 1.28 cents each!
If you spend $300 on groceries or dining on Sapphire Reserve, you can use 20,000 points to offset that purchase and make it free. Plus, you’ll still earn the 900 points for groceries or dining, so you effectively used 19,100 points to offset the purchase. That means your points were actually worth 1.57 cents each!
Airline and hotel transferability:
If you or someone in your household has a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points into valuable airline and hotel mileage currencies.
Card convertibility:
You can call Chase to convert this card or any of the following cards into another card from this list:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ($95 annual fee)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card ($550 annual fee)
- Chase Freedom Unlimited® Card ($0 annual fee)
- Chase Freedom Card ($0 annual fee)
- Chase Freedom Flex Mastercard ($0 annual fee)
Note that some reps will only allow card conversions after you have had the card for 12 months.
If you or someone in your household has a Sapphire Reserve, then your points will be worth at least 1.5 cents towards travel!
If you want to get a Sapphire Reserve, your best path is to apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and then convert it to a Sapphire Reserve as you’ll get 100,000 signup bonus points+$50 back instead of 60,000 points!
Killer Combos:
Stacking multiple Ultimate Rewards cards together can supercharge your earnings by getting you more points per dollar while increasing the value of all your points.
Read more about this strategy in depth in this post.
A Chase Bifecta would consist of a household that has the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Sapphire Reserve and the Freedom Unlimited. The total effective annual fees would be either $95 with Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or $250 with Sapphire Reserve after accounting for that card’s $300 annual travel credit. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card+Freedom Unlimited you would earn 1.5 points per dollar everywhere, 2 points per dollar on all travel, 3 points per dollar on dining and drugstores, and 5 points per dollar on travel booked via Chase. You’ll be able to transfer all of your points into airline miles or hotel points or use the pay yourself back feature. Read more about Freedom Unlimited here.
A Chase Trifecta adds a no annual fee card like Ink Cash or Chase Freedom Flex into the mix, so your total effective annual fee will still be $95 or $250. Both of those cards give options to earn a whopping 5 points per dollar in various categories on top of the 2-3 points per dollar that the Sapphire cards offer and the 1.5-5 points per dollar everywhere else with a Freedom Unlimited card. Read more about Freedom Flex here and read more about Ink Cash here.
A Chase Quadfecta would add both the Ink Cash and Chase Freedom Flex on top of a Sapphire card and an Unlimited card, so your total effective annual fee will still be just $95 or $250. The Quadfecta is the sweet spot and allows you to really supercharge your spending everywhere.
A Chase Quinfecta could add the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card to that mix, adding $95 to the annual fee total. This make sense if you spend money on shipping, social media advertising, or search engine advertising, or if you want free cell phone insurance.
Alternatively, you can create a Chase Quinfecta by adding the Chase United Explorer card, United Gateway℠ Card, or Chase United Business Card into the mix. Those cards don’t earn Ultimate Rewards points, but it makes your Ultimate Rewards points more valuable. Having a United card enables you to have access to significantly expanded United saver and standard award space in addition to benefits like 2 free club passes, a free checked bag, a free carry-on bag, and priority boarding, even when you’re on a basic economy fare. See more about those benefits here.
Again, all of these cards don’t need to be in one person’s name. 2 people from the same household can split up the requisite cards that make up the Quinfecta, as they can transfer the Ultimate Rewards points back and forth between themselves freely and they can add each other as an authorized user on their cards!
DoorDash DashPass Membership:
DoorDash DashPass allows you to get free delivery and lower service fees on $12+ orders from select restaurants that have a blue checkmark. There are also lots of promotions and free food offers available to DashPass members.
DashPass normally costs $9.99/month.
If you add your Chase Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card® Card to your Doordash account and open the Doordash app, you can enroll for free through 12/31/21!
Airline transfer partners:
You can transfer points at a 1:1 ratio to:
- United (Star Alliance)
- Singapore (Star Alliance)
- Air France/KLM Flying Blue (Skyteam)
- British Airways (OneWorld)
- Aer Lingus (OneWorld)
- Iberia (OneWorld)
- Emirates
- JetBlue
- Southwest
- Virgin Atlantic
Hotel transfer partners:
You can transfer points at a 1:1 ratio to:
- Hyatt
- IHG
- Marriott
The great thing about Chase Ultimate Rewards is how versatile and valuable they are:
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card allows you and anyone in your household to transfer Chase points into miles. They also allow you to use points at a value of 1.25 cents each towards travel.
The Sapphire Reserve also allows you and anyone in your household to transfer Chase points into miles. Plus it allows you to use points at a value of 1.5 cents each towards travel.
The fixed value is excellent and doesn’t require hunting down award space, but those points can be much more valuable by transferring them into airline miles or hotel points.
- If I want to stay in a 5 star Park Hyatt in the Maldives, Melbourne, NYC, Paris, Sydney, or Tokyo that would cost over $1,000/night, I can instantly transfer 25-30K points to Hyatt to do that, a value of up to 6 cents per point.
- If I need a one-way flight from Cleveland (or Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Montreal, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Toronto, etc) to NYC that can cost $500 each way, I can instantly transfer 7.5K points to British Airways to book a short-haul on American with no last minute booking fees. Or if American doesn’t have availability I can instantly transfer 10K points to United for their short-haul award. That’s a value of up to 7 cents per point.
- If I want to stay in a non-chain hotel that costs $300/night and don’t want to pay cash, I can redeem 20K points for the room thanks to my Sapphire Reserve card’s minimum redemption value of 1.5 cents per point or 24K points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ’s minimum redemption value of 1.25 cents per point
- If I want to fly in a $25,000 ANA First Class Suite round-trip from the US to Tokyo, I can instantly transfer 110K or 120K points to Virgin Atlantic. That’s a value of up to 23 cents per point.
- If I want to book a $2,281 business class ticket on Air Canada to Tel Aviv I can redeem 152K points for the flight thanks to my Sapphire Reserve card’s minimum redemption value of 1.5 cents per point or 182K points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ’s minimum redemption value of 1.25 cents per point, plus I’ll earn Qantas miles for more future travel as it’s considered a paid flight instead of an award flight.
- And thousands of other possibilities from Singapore couples suites to booking Southwest awards with 2 free bags and free cancellations, to stealing 2nd base in middle of an MLB game.

Will my AF from the sapphire reserve be prorated if I downgrade to open this?
Yes!
Do you get the 100K bonus if you do this?
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
It can’t hurt to ask but it’d definitely a waste of time. They are NOT matching.
True, but you can also ask for goodwill points to make up for it.
Ask via chat, or call?
Probably call if you’re going to ask for something to make up for it.
What number do you call and who do you want to speak to to get these “goodwill” points? The number on back of the card?
Good will, as in the company? or as in, out of his “good will” he will give you extra points?
What does this mean
Was anyone able to get the 20K more points as we just did the 80K new card sign up…
Aw man, I literally just got the Reserve. Any way to get Chase to flip the new card to a Preferred in order to qualify?
Not unless you close it before getting the signup bonus and open this.
Would that work? Also, oops, that was my 5/24 card. What would you do next?
It would work, but would eat up another 5/24 slot. If you’re at 5/24 then you would have to wait until you’re back under 5/24.
If I convert the existing Reserve (that earned no bonus yet) to a Sapphire Preferred now, I will get no bonus at all?
What would be the point of converting to Sapphire Preferred?
For the increased bonus offer on the Preferred.
You won’t get that for converting.
if you didn’t yet use the card. you can cancel and reopen. call them before.
until when is this offer valid?
Unknown, can end at any time.
Any chance this will make it 5 months? I don’t become eligible for 48 month rule until November 🙁 And something tells me that after this, it will be a long time until it’s higher than 60k.
I’d be shocked if it sticks around that long.
Dan, I still have the Reserve from when it started, how do I get in on this Preferred deal and where to park my UR points from my Reserve?
Thanks!
downgrade to a freedom unlimited and the ur points will stay there and apply

Thanks, Sol con and Dan for your reply! 🙂
We’ve had Reserve since 2016, with my wife as auth use till 2019; now a one-card fam. I just opened an Ink Cash for my biz ($750 signing bonus + 5% cash back).
Wife has no cards in her name and can use the credit boost it provides. Would it pay for her to apply for Preferred as primary user, and me to keep Reserve and Ink?
Or what combination would net the best value?
You should both take advantage of the Preferred offer.
You can upgrade back to Reserve after approval.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/faqs-becoming-eligible-chase-sapphire-preferreds-deal-year-late/
Thanks!
can one include household income for 19 year old daughter applicant living at home working part time?
You should always include all household income.
I thought you had to be 21 in order to include all household income ?
Not enforced IME.
not sure about that as when I was on the phone with I believe a chase rep on a recon call, rep mentioned minimum 21 year age requirement
How do I check if I’m 48 months clear. I got the 100k reserve on the last available day so 48 months is around now but I’m not sure when I actually received the bonus
Do you still have that card open as a Reserve or downgraded card?
I have the same question and the card is still open how do I check ?
Just go to your online statements from 2017 and you can see the exact statement date that you got the bonus.
I am in the same boat. Does it go by the statement opening day or closing day?
Closing.
I got mine July 8, 2017. So can I apply on July 8? Or do I need to wait until the closing date on that statement?
Downgraded to a Freedom
Same advice for you as well 🙂
How can you check if you’ve closed the card in the past?
Just got the card a month ago any possibility of them matching the signup bonus?
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#comment-1532084
Any idea how long this is going to last? Are we talking a matter of days or weeks or months?
Impossible to say.
And I just signed up for the 80k offer less than 6 weeks ago…. Called Chase and just sent a Secure Message trying to get a match. Wish me luck.
A lot of people are in the same boat. They’re not matching to this offer, but you can always call and ask for something to make up for it.
Literally signed up 2 days ago. What a bummer
Were you approved?
Could cancel and reopen, but would cost another 5/24 slot.
Yeah I was approved. Don’t wanna waste a 5/24 and also nervous to play tricks like that with chase when they are so trigger happy to shut people down
Yup, c’est la vie I’m afraid.
But don’t feel bad, my wife and I both grabbed the 80K bonus as well. Nunu!
how were you under 5/24 🙂
I have the same question! I’m shocked that Dan is ever able to get any Chase cards at all with the 5/24 rule….
Nunu indeed! 80k plus the $50 grocery credit ain’t too shabby
Exactly, nothing to sneeze at!
Remember when the 60k offer was the “highest ever” lol? I guess it’s a really profitable card for them.
Unless they’re getting ready to unveil an even bigger CSR offer…
Competition is a good thing!
The Capital One Venture 100K offer with improved mileage transfer ratios has been putting pressure on Chase. Plus we just saw Chase announce that they’ll open a Sapphire airport lounge network after Capital One announced that they will operate an airport lounge network.
Chase said they regretted the 100K Reserve offer as that card has pricey benefits to administer. I don’t think we’ll see 100K on that card anytime soon.
Yes but the Venture offer needs 20k spend although they’re definitely trending in the right direction overall
True, but leave it to Chase to match and crush it 🙂
I primarily use for mileage on airlines. Is this chase preferred better than capital one venture. They’re both at 100k now for opening?
I just downgraded an existing sapphire in preparation for signing up for the sapphire preferred a couple of days ago. How long should I wait in order to safely apply without getting rejected for having an existing sapphire card? Don’t want to be rejected, but at the same time don’t want to miss this offer…
3 days would be playing it safe. Could be doable in less, but not enough data points. Though there’s nothing to lose as the system would auto-reject you without a pull and you can try again in another day. Let us know if you try 🙂
Rep told me that I can apply as soon as my downgraded card shows as freedom online. Worked after a day.
bad info, when it’s dan vs rep dan is always right!
I got a “decision pending” after applying.
“We need to review your request a little longer. We will let you know of our decision as soon as possible.”
Normal. Can wait until they decide or you can call them up now.
Any negative to closing the reserve now I opened it when first came out… and then adding it back a few months down the line any benefits that I’ll be losing by doing so?
I’d suggest downgrading it now and upgrading it down the line:
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
What if my wife is an authorized user on my current Sapphire cards.. can we get this in her name and receive the bonus?
Yes.
Seriously? ! I would rather take this over the United card. Can I ask my approval of the United card be transferred to the Sapphire card?
No, but why not do both?
I have already a chase preferred card, can I change it to a freedom unlimited and then apply again for the preferred card ?
Yes: https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
Thanks!!! such a quick response.
thats even my preferred was opened under 5/24?
Not following what you’re asking.
I’m asking if what you answered Yes to Crunchy, that downgrading will help get the sapphire, Is that even my preferred is still under 5/24?
Can I open this if I have a reserve?
No, but here’s a workaround: https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
I signed up for the preferred @80K last year. Just applied and was approved @100k for my wife! How difficult will it be to transfer my points to her account? As I don’t want to pay 2 annual fees for same card. Thanks!
Awesome!
It’s very easy to transfer points between spouses. But instead of closing one when the next annual fee is due, I’d suggest downgrading one to a Freedom or Freedom Unlimited to build a Quinfecta:
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/ultimate-comparison-chart-chase-ultimate-rewards-cards-supercharge-earnings-creating-chase-quinfecta-killer-combo/
Can I upgrade back from Freedom to CSR after I get approved for the CSP? Any waiting time.
Yes.
No.
So that means you can have a preferred and reserve at the same time if you upgrade to reserve afte you have preferred?
Yes
Really interesting here that the audience here is not cursing away chase for there action that they have done. I just got the 80K. It’s unfair.
I hear ya’, I’m in the same boat. But that’s just the ups and downs of this game, can’t win them all.
My take is that they are feeling pressure from the Capital One Venture 100K offer and wanted to match that signup bonus.
I wish they still did offer matching for Sapphire, but AMEX ditched offer matching many years ago, so no surprise that Chase did as well.
When does the annual fee post The beginning of the year or after the year?
Beginning, but $95 is a pittance compared to the 100,000 point signup bonus that can be used for $1,000 cash back or potentially twice that amount in travel.
Ok Thank you
I have the chase reserve for 4 years. can i apply for the preferred and get the bonus or do i have downgrade to the freedom.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
You can apply and Chase won’t pull your credit or approve you if you are not eligible to get the card bonus.
How does this work? like what happens with amex? thanks
Chase knows if you got a bonus within 48 months or if you have an open Sapphire care and they don’t bother pulling your credit. It will auto-reject you if you apply.
Got the original 100k bonus on the Reserve, and still have that (and haven’t gotten enough of a reason to cancel it yet), and I already have every Freedom (Unlimited, original Visa, and more recently got the Flex), any way to still get this?
Can sign my wife up (though she has additional cards on all the above cards, including one on the Reserve which was cancelled but still should work), or any better way to still take advantage of this?
Thanks a lot!
Sure, there’s no limit to how many Freedom/Freedom Flex cards you can downgrade to and you’ll get the $1,500 5x quarterly bonus for each Freedom card that you have!
Yes, she can get this, AU cards don’t count against her for the bonus. They may count against her for 5/24, but you can call Chase and point out that they are AU cards that she isn’t responsible for and should be excluded from 5/24.
Did not know that, might make sense, thanks!
Can I still downgrade to the Freedom (not Unlimited), or only to the Flex?
And I don’t know if I’ll lose any benefits from my current Reserve card, still only paying the lower yearly fee ($450) on that card, and if I upgrade again later, I don’t want that to go up…
Thanks for all the info and expertise!
If I currently have the sapphire reserve and I downgrade today to the freedom, can I apply for the preferred and get bonus?
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
Hi,
Do the points expire? Would they expire if I cancel the card?
TIA!
Points don’t expire as long as you or a spouse has an open Chase card with Ultimate Rewards points as you can transfer points between cards.
Instead of cancelling, you can downgrade to a no annual fee card which will keep your points alive:
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/ultimate-comparison-chart-chase-ultimate-rewards-cards-supercharge-earnings-creating-chase-quinfecta-killer-combo/
Gotchya, I have an ink business preferred and an ink business unlimited so I should be able to transfer the points over to either one right?
Thanks Dan!
Correct.
Awesome, thanks Dan!
I applied via your link yesterday about 2 hours before it was raised to 100K 🙁
wasn’t approved instead “We need to review your request a little longer. We will let you know of our decision as soon as possible.”
probably as they shut all my cards 2 years ago
but Thanks anyways for all your posts
Can always tell them to cancel that application and try this one.
I got the reserve more than 48 months ago and I still have it. I would want to sign up for preferred but it says you won’t get the signup bonus if you have any sapphire card. Is it possible to get the signup bonus while still keeping my reserve active?
You can downgrade it to Freedom for now and upgrade it back later on.
how long do you have to wait before upgrading ? right after the 100k bonus posts?
Any problem with downgrading a Reserve that was just upgraded 2 months ago from a freedom?
No.
how different then those who sign up get the bonus and then downgrade the card? a few posts above this you recommend waiting at least 12 months
Because you didn’t get a signup bonus for upgrading.
how long to wait after downgrading a reserve before signing up for preferred?
3 days would be playing it safe. Could be doable in less, but not enough data points. Though there’s nothing to lose as the system would auto-reject you without a pull and you can try again in another day. Let us know if you try 🙂
Even if you already used the travel credit on the reserve after upgrading, it wouldn’t be a problem to downgrade a few days later?
Trie to apply in the branch a week after downgrading the reserve to freedom. The agent’s screen did not include the preferred card. Chase’s supervisor claimed that I have to wait for a whole statement cycle before applying. Did other people manage to do it in less time IN BRANCH?
No, 3 days is only for online. Branch rules are much longer.
If I’m an authorized user on a sapphire card, will I be eligible for the bonus? I signed up and got approved. Does that mean I’ll get the bonus?
Yes.
Yes.
Congrats 😀
I have now reserve its open for more than 48 months, is there an issue downgrading it to freedom and then get the preffered, and then upgrade the preffered to reserve (since I want a reserve open)?
No issue.
Any potential issue with upgrading the Preferred to Reserve right after receiving the 100K points on the Preferred, or should we wait to do so? Thanks.
I’d like to know this as well…good way to kill two birds with one stone
Same question.
Did you have any issues with this?
Dan, I just got the Reserve card for 60k. What are the chances of getting approved for this as well?
You need to wait 48 months between Sapphire bonuses. If you didn’t get the bonus yet you can potentially close that card and get this offer, but that would eat up another 5/24 slot.
Just to be clear
You can sign up get the bonus and then downgrade the card and only pay one annual fee?
The best practice would be to downgrade when your 2nd annual fee hits in 12 months from now. You can downgrade then and you won’t pay that 2nd annual fee.
They will give a full refund of the second annual fee if you downgrade even after it hits? What’s the reason for waiting until after the fee hits?
Yes.
Credit card companies don’t like to see people closing cards within the first year of opening it.
If I won’t get much value from keeping the sapphire preferred card open, can I downgrade it to a no-fee card after my signup bonus posts and get a prorated refund of the $95? Or will that raise red flags?
I wouldn’t do that if you want to stay in Chase’s good graces.
The best practice would be to downgrade when your 2nd annual fee hits in 12 months from now. You can downgrade then and you won’t pay that 2nd annual fee.
Will they pull my credit if I’m over 5/24?
Does a store card count towards the 5/24?
Thanks!
YMMV.
The system will count it, but if you call Chase reconsideration and explain that it’s only a store card they can exclude it.
How long do I have to wait if I downgrade my sapphire reserve to reopen it again?
There’s no time limit.
What’s the phone number to check the status of a Chase credit card application?
888-338-2586
Used your link and got approved bh. THANKS DAN!
Congrats!
How long does it take for the rewards bonus offer to show up on https://ultimaterewardspoints.chase.com/ Saying amount and timeframe. I have a Flex card where it shows spend $500 blah blah, but I just got this Sapphire and it doesn’t show anything… yet at least. Wasn’t sure if it shows up immediately or not.
Give it a few days 🙂
Thanks, I literally got the Freedom Flex card yesterday and this offer was declined instantly. However I called that reconsideration line and they were able to push it through to get me approved for both. At first I said you could try shifting the limit amount but I guess that wasn’t possible with the freedom flex at this time. However, she just went ahead and approved me for both without the shift. Good stuff.
When I downgrade my reserve to a freedom will I get the prorated annual fee back?
Also, can I then upgrade it back to the Reserve immediately after getting approved for the Preferred or do I have to wait till I earn the bonus?
(I don’t want to miss out on the 1.5 redemption rate and lounge access in the interim).
Yes.
Immediate.
I’m in the same boat as GoFish here and thank you so much Dan for confirming… Just to clarify, if I also downgrade my CSR (my previous 100k bonus was approved and posted on my 5/2017 statement) to a Freedom then they will prorate the $550 AF which I just paid on 4/1/2021 and then I can upgrade it back to the CSR to take advantage of the 1.5x multiplier? If this is the case, then I’d assume that I’d then be hit with another $550 AF when upgrading back to the CSR after locking in the CSP 100k bonus, correct? Thanks again and my wife and I will both be using your referral link!!
I just had a convo with a nice rep at Chase. She said that when I downgrade from CSR to Freedom Flex, my AF will be returned on a prorated basis. But she also said that if I choose to upgrade that Freedom Flex back up to a CSR, say next month, they will his me with a brand new full AF. Is that correct? How is that worth it?
Sounds right. How is it not worth it, it’s the same effective monthly fee either way.
You’re right. I realized the problem with my logic after I typed up my post. Thank you for the quick response.
How can you check when was the last time one got the bonus if the card has been closed?
You can try calling, but if they don’t know then I’m not sure how you can find out other than just applying.
If you are under 48 months you will get auto-rejected without a hard credit pull.
If you have 48+ months you will get approved and get the bonus.
All confused. If I downgraded the preffered last year after receiving the sign up bonus. Can I apply now and receive the 100k points or because I received the bonus in the past 48 months I am ineligible, even though I dont currently hold the preffered or reserve?
Thanks!
No, if you’re within 48 months of your last Sapphire bonus you’ll get auto-rejected if you apply.
So all this talk about downgrading in order to reapply is for people who currently have their cards open for longer than 4 years, correct?
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
I currently have the reserve for over 48 months. I’ll downgrade to freedom now as instructed in post. The question is I want to keep my reserve at all times in order to get the 1.5 points etc. if after getting approved for preferred can i now upgrade my freedom back to reserve? Will I get hit with $550 immediately? How about the $300 annual travel credit etc.
Also is there any benefit of having the sapphire reserve from before 5/21/17 like the $300 travel credit being based on calendar year.
Also before downgrading should I be utilizing the $60 door dash credit?
I don’t think it matters if your travel credit is calendar or cardmember year based.
Doordash credit can be used when you upgrade again, so no big deal. Don’t think it will replenish itself.
So if only use some of my DoorDash credit before downgrading, you’re saying that when I upgrade back to it that remainder will be there?
You can downgrade and get a prorated refund and upgrade right away with the full annual fee.
So when upgrading back with the full annual fee will I be getting another $300 for this year to offset the $550 to $250?
I’m also interested in knowing this… Any info here, Dan?
If I refer a friend from my preferred, will they get the 100,000 bonus? the link that’s created still says 80,000 and he doesn’t want to use my link b/c he thinks he won’t get the 100,000.
What’s the question?
If your link says 80K then your friend would only get 80K and Chase will not match to 100K.
Use the link in this post if you want 100K.
I was wondering if they just never updated it to 100,000 but if my friend signs up from it, he’ll still get 100,000. im asking because I want to get the referral bonus. is there a way I can generate a referral link that will offer 100,000?
No, he will only get 80K with your link.
No.
Listen to dan! i learnt the hard way on this…
Darn you have the guts, this site survives by you using the referral links from them, don’t come read the info and have the guts to ask that question…
Moshe – Dan seems to live a great life based on all the referral credits. If this site just simply “survives”, then Dan should consider getting a day job instead.
And your seeming attack doesn’t help his viewership… it alienates people instead. YOU unknowingly “hurt” Dan with these types of comments.
This isn’t charity for Dan. That makes him the vendor and YS the customer. It’s a sad state of affairs that society has seemingly lost it’s spirit of service to others.
This is ludicrous. Dan typed up a very helpful post explaining everything you need to know and answers questions in the comments to help people and hopefully get people to sign up for the credit card with his link.
It takes a certain type of person to come ask him in the comments of that very post for help in using his post and screwing him.
I have all three Freedom cards.
Should I cancel the Unlimited or Flex, and down my Sapphire Reserve before applying for the Preferred?
You can have multiple of the same Freedom card, no need to cancel any. Plus with multiple Freedom cards you get more quarterly 5x bonus spend.
I just wanted to express appreciation to Dan for answering all of our questions here today. Very much appreciated 🙂
My pleasure!
Thanks to the DD community for using our links and supporting this site 🙂
I applied denied anything I can do about it Dan?
When did you get your last Sapphire bonus? When did you downgrade/close your Sapphire card?
Call Chase.
I never had one and never downgraded
Call Chase 🙂
Hey Dan, question. I just downgraded my CSR to a freedom. I plan on applying for the CSP in a few days. Do you know anything about doing a MDD, and applying again for the reserve the day after I get the CSP?
Not sure if doing an MDD is worth risking Chase’s ire, but if you try it, let us know how it goes.
There’s some MDD discussion on DDF.
Thank you, if you’re iffy on it, maybe I’ll just play it safe.
What means MDD and what’s the link to that DDF thread?
I downgraded my sapphire card a few years ago to the plain sapphire card can i get the bonus now if i upgrade?
When did you get the bonus on that card? Look at your old statement to find the one with the signup bonus.
Like 4 years ago
Check the exact statement date.
When I upgrade back from freedom to CSR, will I be back on the same calendar cycle for the annual fee, or will I be charged a new CSR fee at upgrade time?
Thanks, just called and they said that they will match my bonus from 80k to 100k! (It took 1 min to get done)
WOW!
Anyone else have luck?
When did you get your card?
I got mine in Nov 2020, should I call too
Umm what?? I tried via phone and SM and Nada. Have a name of Rep?
Still have the CSR from the original offering @ 100K.
If I downgrade it today, how many days should I wait before applying for this card?
3 days to play it safe.
Is it safe to assume the offer will still be around then?
Never a good idea to assume anything, can just hope for the best.
You can also try applying 1 or 2 days after downgrading and let us know how that goes.
Dan what’s the basis for the wait? I called today to downgrade and asked the operator if I had to wait and she said I could do it right away. I haven’t yet because I feel like you know better!
Because I’ve tried doing it right away and was auto-rejected. I tried again after 3 days and it worked.
It takes some period of time for the system to recognize that you no longer have a Sapphire card, though I don’t know the exact period of time.
I’m an authorized user can I still qualify? I assume I would half to deauthorize myself before applying ?
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
I am also confused about when re-upping (my current CSR after downgrading to Freedom) back to the CSR. Will I be charged again the $550 annual fee? And will I get the $300 travel bonus to offset that?
You’ll get a prorated refund when you downgrade and the annual fee when you upgrade, so that’s a wash.
Is it worth it to get this card if my goal is an eventual sapphire reserve?
Absolutely. You can upgrade later on.
Thank you!
I got a sapphire card 2 days ago with the 80k – can I get this?
Weird, just called to downgrade and was told by the customer service rep that it will take 90 days for the system to consider me as not having a Sapphire card (not 3 days)
Also told me I will not be eligible to upgrade back to a CSR for 12 months. He said you’re only eligible for one product change every 12 months
What should I do? Really want to have a reserve card. Has anyone done this? Does the customer service guy not know what he is talking about
Clueless rep. The correct info is in this post.
Aren’t you losing the 1.5 redemption by downgrading the csr you have now? What if you can’t get that back? I have a csr now but would otherwise qualify for this.
Also will credit limit remain same on downgraded card. High limit now. Thanks for your thought here.
You can upgrade back at any time. Credit limit and card number stays the same.
Seems like Chase wants a big boost in new card accounts for this portfolio in this quarter. 😀
Good news for everyone 🙂
How do I add my wife’s card for ultimate rewards transfer?
You can call Chase to transfer points between spouses.
Id love to grab this offer, and im well under 5/24, but i already have a ton of credit from chase, and im scared of hard questions (or tax info requests) if i dont get instantly approved. can applying for this card backfire on me?
No reason that it should.
Applied for wife and got rejected
Called in and after few basic questions got approved 🙂
Nicely done!
what number do i call?
Received Sapphire Preferred last week with 80K bonus offer.
Just spoke with customer rep – she said they have been receiving a lot of calls to match to 100k. She forwarded my request to the marketing department and they are supposed to get back to me via email….we’ll see what happens
Downgraded my CSR to freedom, important question is when upgrading back to CSR and getting hit with $550 AF am I getting the $300 TC?
You should get a prorated refund when you downgrade and then a charge when you upgrade.
Dan, someone pays my rent, do I put down zero rent, or put down rent and then just add his payment to my (non-taxable) income?
0 rent.
Thanks. So check off rent and write 0 or check off other?
What if I applied and was rejected Friday, b/c I realized after the fact that I have to downgrade CSR card first (I assume that’s the reason, no other good reason, got the Quest in April no sweat) — can I still downgrade my CSR and apply in 3 days, or am I now flagged to not get this offer? thoughts? thanks.
Gotta read the post 😀
But yes, you can.
Thanks — got a little excited and clicked the link when I saw the 100k, and realized I don’t have the preferred only the reserve 🙂 Shavua Tov and Chodesh Tov!
How do you know, once applied for the card, if you are eligible for the 100k???
What is your question?
If you the link you applied with says 100,000 points, such as the link in this post, then you will get 100,000 points if you are approved and spend $4,000 in 3 months.
Can’t he be approved for the card, but not the points?
As the post says, no.
I applied for the 60 k but was within 4 yrs then i applied for the 80k and got rejected but now i applied for the 100 k and got approved thank you H-shem what siyata dishmaya!!!!!!!
Nice!
Talk about “SMOKING HOT”. I burnt my fingers applying. TY!
😀
got approved (thru ur link)
thanks!
Thanks and congrats!
Any idea when this offer ends?
Nope. Can end at any time.
Would an 18 year old student (with a small amount of income) be able to qualify for this card? Have some history as AU on parents’ card. Maybe too early to try and get in the game but tempting…
Better odds if you include all household income, but might be easier to start with a store card or Freedom card.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/credit-cards-points-start-need-know-best-credit-cards/
is there any possibility that i should get approved for this one if i only opend my first cc 3 months ago credit score 705 ?? any advice??
No way to predict that.
is it worth for me to try, or I’ll run my credit ?
Certainly will not ruin your credit if you try. No big deal.
Hi Dan, signed up using your link and was immediately approved. Thanks.
I was wondering sign up bonus aside how does this card compare to the BOA travel awards card? At a glance the travel awards card gives you 1.5 points back on all purchases vs 1 with the Sapphire preferred (plus no annual fee). I realize that the sapphire preferred offers 2 points for travel and dining but I imagine that doesn’t balance out the 1.5 on everything that the travel awards gives. Is the real value with the chase cards only when you have multiple different chase cards?
Congrats!
BOA can’t transfer points to miles, so the value of the points are limited, whereas the sky is the limit with airline miles.
The real value with Chase is multiple cards though, where you can earn 1.5-5 everywhere and redeem as 1.25-1.57 or transfer to miles.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/ultimate-comparison-chart-chase-ultimate-rewards-cards-supercharge-earnings-creating-chase-quinfecta-killer-combo/
Just got approved for the the preferred with a 17k credit line.
After applying online they said it’s under review, so I called the reconsideration line and after answering 2 questions I got approved instantly.
I also had 2 open sapphire cards which I only closed on Friday, so for those asking how long you need to wait, I waited 2 days and got approved.
Congrats and thanks for the data point!
Hi,
Do I have more of a chance of getting approved if I got an invitation from Chase by mail?
Thank You
Nope, either way they will check your credit and make a decision.
Good luck!
Just called Chase to try to get a match on my 5 week old Sapphire Preferred to the new 100k offer. I was told that while they are not currently matching offers, they are keeping track of how many complaints are registered and if enough people call to complain corporate may decide to change their minds. The rep said it’s happened in the past.
I guess Chase was forced to improve the offer (Capitol One?). But some 80K-customers could remember this when AF hits statements next year.
How should we send a complaint in?
How can we put in a complaint?
Approved (with your link)
Todah Rabbah!
Thanks and congrats!
What number do call for reconsideration?
If I downgrade from a Reserve to a Freedom, how long do I have to wait to upgrade back to a Reserve?
2-3 days.
Dan, just another data point – I downgraded my sapphire on Wednesday night and just applied for the sapphire preferred and got approved (after calling up to shift credit). Used your link 🙂
Thanks and congrats!
I just noticed that even though the new card shows up on my online account and UR page, the 100k bonus points “spending meter” is no where to be found and there is no mention of the 100k bonus. Should I be concerned?
Nope. If you used the link in this post you will get the 100K.
I was thinking about downgrading the CSR to a Freedom but I have a few trips booked with it. I don’t want to risk losing the trip protection.
You can upgrade it back.
But when I downgraded my CSR, it gave me a totally new cc # for my downgraded card, and all of my booked trips no longer show in my account (they told me I should just hang on to the itinerary #s), so even if I re-upgrade, those trips will not be covered by the trip protection?
You probably downgraded to a Freedom Flex which is a MasterCard and gives a new card number.
I got my signup bonus for statement with the dates of 05/18/17 – 06/08/17 would I qualify? Or am I day off?
Sure, just wait for June 8th to apply!
Thank you!
I got my last Sapphire bonus sometime in 6/17. I called to find out the exact date they I was told they have no record of the account. I gave my full 15 digit number.
Should I still wait till July or am I good to go? (don’t want an extra credit pull).
Is your Sapphire card or downgraded card still open? You can pull up your 2017 statements and check.
Closed. I removed it from my online account at some point.
There seems to be no way to find out, other than trying.
The good news is that you will get an auto-reject if you’re under 48 months without a credit pull, so you can keep trying until you get accepted.
Ok, thanks. Do you know when bonus points usually post? Is it when I finish the necessary spend? Or the last day of my statement?
When the statement closes.
If I have 4 credit cards under my name from my brothers account (added member) and one from me would I get approved? Or is that considered having 5 cards and I won’t get approved?
All opened in the past 24 months?
AU cards do not count towards 5/24, but the system accidentally counts them. You need to tell a rep that they are only AU cards and that you aren’t responsible for them and they can manually exclude them from 5/24.
So I should apply for it, once I get unapproved.. I call a representative?
Correct.
Just spoke to chase card services . The person said even though the referral says 80k the person will still get 100k. Makes sense Dan?
Utter and complete nonsense.
You will get the points that the application says and nothing else. Full stop.
I downgraded from a SR on Friday. When should I apply?
Should work now, try and let us know.
Thank you.
Just applied (Monday).
Approved BH
(Just feeling left out of the AMEX 50/40 🙁 )
Hi Dan.
I applied last week Friday but per chase, it is still under review by the fraud department, anything I can do?
I have the reserve and got a few months ago a $250 retention offer, can I still downgrade and apply for the preferred?
Called for compensation/matching …. They said the decision was made last week that there is no adjustment..
Can I call Chase to change this Sapphire Preferred card after receiving the sign up bonus to the Chase Amazon card to get 5% back on all Amazon and Whole Foods purchases. I haven’t seen any sign up bonuses for that card…
No. The changeable cards are listed in this post.
At any rate, you can do better than 5% with Chase Ink and with a big signup bonus to boot.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/chase-ink-cash-card-earning-5-ultimate-rewards-points-per-dollar-amazon-everyday-spending/
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/ultimate-comparison-chart-chase-ultimate-rewards-cards-supercharge-earnings-creating-chase-quinfecta-killer-combo/
if i got bonus 12/17 and i apply now and get approved does that mean i will for sure get bonus?
I don’t think you’ll get approved, but if you are approved, you will get the bonus.
And if you’re auto-denied due to 48 months, there’s no hard pull.
I got the 100k CSR bonus in January 2017, am i eligible for this offer?
Yes.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#Signup_bonus_terms
Dan, I didn’t read your post or any of your comments. Could you explain how the whole things works?
😀
Just checked, my reserve was opened Feb 2017. Should I downgrade to get this offer? I’m currently using the reserve..
Opening date is irrelevant, check what statement date in 2017 that you got the bonus.
And sure, definitely makes sense.
Got the bonus in April. Thanks:)
Guess all current benefits will be terminated. How soon after getting bonus can I upgrade to reserve? and/or can I get reserve bonus again?
You can upgrade after getting approved.
You can only get one Sapphire bonus every 48 months.
Just applied for my wife with your link and got approved with 5K limit,
Downgraded my chase sapphire reserve card and will apply for myself tomorrow.
Thank you
Thanks and congrats!
Downgraded CS to Flex on Friday, the new card displayed in my Chase app almost immediately
Applied tonight for CSP and approved instantly
Thanks Dan, now & for always!
Nice! You’re most welcome!
Just got approved for my wife using your link, thanks Dan, keep up the great work!
Thanks and congrats 🙂
I just got the freedom card about 3 weeks ago any chance they let me upgrade it to that one and then I could get to sign up bonus or would I have to apply for a completely new one
No, you would have to make a new application.
Is there anyway to get the $60 door dash credit on a gift card before downgrading the reserve card. Thanks
I don’t think so, but you should be able to schedule an order.
Any downside to downgrading the CSR that is grandfathered for all credit card benefits to the credit card year vs the calendar year. Will the door dash credit and travel credit reset when I upgrade the card back to CSR in 2 months?
Nope. I doubt it.
Thanks Dan approved for 19 year old applicant!
Awesome!
Dan, would it be risky to upgrade and downgrade the same card a few times per year?
Thanks
People have done that without any adverse actions.
One more data point, I downgraded from CSR to CFU on Friday, just applied for the CSP, and got approved instantly. Thanks Dan. (Now, to MDD or not is the question).
Congrats! Keep us posted if you try it.
Can I convert chase southwest points using this card?
You can transfer Chase points to Southwest, but not vice versa.
How do I downgrade my existing sapphire preferred card? Is there a way to do it online, or do I have to call the number on the back of the card? Thanks
The latter.
thanks Dan
I booked a trip for the end of June using the Reserve card. If I downgrade now will I lose all of the additional Reserve benefits for the card? Do you think this offer will last into July?
You can upgrade back after you’re approved.
So I can downgrade, get approved for the Preferred, and then upgrade back to the Sapphire within the same month?
Do I need to complete the spend and get the bonus before I upgrade back up?
Thanks!
Yes.
No.
That’s great to know. Thank you!
I downgraded Saturday and applied this morning Monday and was turned down. They said that the system still recognizes me as having the Sapphire. Rep said to wait 30 days to reapply. What should I do?
It can take up to 3 days. Does the card still show as Sapphire in your Chase account?
No need to wait 30 days.
Dan, I do lot of amazon purchases. Is it better to get this CSP or signup for an AMEX card with amex offers on amazon where you get 50$ off frequently ?
Both?
But this bonus is a lot more lucrative than occasional $50 off offers.
If all my CC’s were closed down by chase, is there a chance I’ll get approved?
Depends on when and why you were shut down, but sure. Many people have gotten back in again.
I tried applying but was declined because in Chase’s records I have a Sapphire card, problem is I was shut down by Chase a few years ago, I can open cards at Chase again after about a 2 year hiatus (I have the Flex card) but in their system it shows I still have the Sapphire card, help!
Try calling and asking why it still shows you have a Sapphire?
I mistakenly downgraded my wife’s CSP instead of mine (I’m eligible for the bonus, not her). Can I reverse the downgrade?? I don’t want to take the risk, downgrade mine and then potentially not have any household CSP. Thanks
Sure, just call.
Abraham, you’re approved!
Thanks Dan!
Congrats!
My Credit score went down 6 points. How long should to take to go back?
Should be higher than before within a few months by using it correctly. (Pay off full statement besides for a buck or 2 before the statement closes).
Is this true even if Chase shifted credit to the CSP from another open card? Meaning they did not actually grant any additional credit with the opening of this card.
Still didn’t receive the card. Makes sense?
Call to have it expedited.
I want to use my wife’s referral link, it is only offering 80,000 points. What should do to get the extra 20k to reach 100,000
You can’t and they are not matching offers..
But I sincerely appreciate the support for using our 100K link in this post!
will do .
Thank you for all the deals you post
I have the free sapphire card no annual fee (im also way past the 48 months). will i qualify for the bonus or do i need to downgrade this to a freedom? thanks
You need to downgrade.
I have a freedom i just got approved for about 3 weeks ago… Could I upgrade to get this?
You would have to apply for this card to get the bonus.
Does this mean i got the bonus in last 48 months?
“Thank you for your request.
Unfortunately, we are unable to approve your application.
We will provide you more detailed information in 7-10 days that explains the reasons for this decision.
Probably, but call Chase to confirm.
Dan, thanks! Approved immediately just a couple of months after getting Freedom Flex bonus. On my way to having a million Chase Ultimate Rewards points!
Sweet!
Dear Dan
Is there fear in getting denied from a cc?
I’ve had a chase amazon for 2 months, an Amex for 8 months. I have excellent credit. 6 months ago chase denied me from this card. Any chance I get excepted now?
Nope.
Did you call Recon to see why you were denied and if it could be overturned? Either way, certainly things can change in 6 months.
Dear Dan,
I got declined. They said they’ll say more in 7-10 days, please advise.
Your pal -22
Hi Dan, I called to downgrade my CSR to Flex. The rep said the CSR account will remain open for 60 days to complete any transactions, etc with the card. Will this affect qualification for the CSP bonus at all?
No.
Hi all,
Any good ideas on how to spend the $4 K in 3 months in addition to what’s in the post already?
Thanks!
Prepay upcoming bills?
Buy gift cards from stores you shop at?
Make a charity donation?
Thanks Dan!
Hi Dan,
I just downgraded the reserve card and saw it updated to the new flex card online. So I went ahead and applied and was denied. Can I just reapply again in a few days or should I give them a call now?
That’s why I wrote to wait 2 days 🙂
Apply again in 2 days.
I downgraded my CSR to Freedom on Monday morning. Today (Wed afternoon) I applied and was rejected for CSP. Called reconsideration and said that 2+ days was insufficient and that I need to wait the full 30 days?
I’d try again tomorrow.
Can you immediately upgrade the Flex back to the CSR once you get approved for the CSP and still get the bonus?
Yes
Hi!
I just spent 20 minutes trying to convince the supervisor to match the 100k points as I just signed up a few weeks ago and I got 80k bonus points.
Alas, they would not match it. Anyone have any luck? No retention or loyalty bonus either.
One commenter above had luck, but everyone else is being told no.
Hey Dan, I tried referring a friend to the Chase Sapphire card and he only got offered the 80k bonus. Any info on that?
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/smoking-hot-highest-ever-signup-bonus-earn-100000-points-chase-sapphire-preferred-card/#comment-1532524
Chase threw me out 2 years ago. I had 5 different cards. On one of the cards, I maxed out, paid it immediately before cycle ended, used it again and immediately paid balance, all before cycle ended.
I didn’t read the dan’s deal forum that it was a no no. They cancelled my card claiming I was credit risk even though I have a credit score of over 820. Am I wasting my time and credit score applying? Am I banned for 7 years?
Yes, that is indeed a no-no:
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/avoid-credit-cards-closed-red-flags-trigger-financial-reviews-adverse-action-shutdowns/
The timeframe varies, you’ll just have to keep trying until you get back in.
Just applied. Response was we will have to get back to you which in this case means rejected. Guess I will have to wait another year with Chase!
Approved from your link after calling to move some credit from different card!
Thanks and congrats!
how long does it take to get approved once i apply?
Either instant or a week or 2 until they decide or you call to expedite things.
Got denied. Chase told me I have too many credit cards.
Dan, I know you mentioned not to close CC. but if I have to is it better if I close it or let the credit card companies cancel it?
Try moving around credit. I called recon today and moved 5k to open this card from a card I currently have credit line of 8.5 and was approved.
Call and offer to close a card and move the line to the new card.
Thanks Dan, got instantly approved.
Congrats!
If I downgrade my CSP to one of the freedoms(which I’ve never had before) will it disqualify me from receiving the SUB on them in the future?
No.
Hey Dan,
Just wanted to thank you for answering everyone’s questions, plus I thought I’ll add a data point to do my small contribution. Especially since I see a few people asked about this data point.
I’m 19 years old, and I applied for the Sapphire card seven months ago, and I was denied, despite calling the reconsideration line. They told me that Chase doesn’t accept people who haven’t been cardholders for over a year, (authorized user cards wouldn’t help for that.)
I applied today, with your link, and was immediately approved!
What is the contact number for chase reconsideration line?
Can I combine reward points between accounts? Or just transfer them all to an airline or hotel account?
Sure
Young married couple learning in kollel supported mostly by parents, any advice what I should write by income?
Is this offer worth taking up a 5/24 slot?
Definitely! This is an amazing offer!
My wife has the Reserve and I have the united explorer card($95 annual fee)
Which is the better card: the sapphire preffered or this united card.
Pros and Cons for each?
Both are solid and complimentary cards.
Thanks Dan!
I know that Chase mentions in their terms regarding someone opening just for the purpose of earning a bonus that they can cancel your points etc…. Wanted to clarify, what do they consider legit and what is considered fraud? I would appreciate your guidance.
Always keep new cards open for at least 12 months.
Just downgraded from CS to Flex. It was instantly updated in the app. How long should i wait before applying?
2 days.
I currently have the sapphire reserve card, paid my annual fee in Sep 2020, When I called to downgrade to unlimited flex they told me they won’t pro-rate my annual fee and I asked if I where to choose in a month to upgrade back to reserve card they said I would pay annual fee again…basically I’m losing out on 6 months of my annual fee….
Any suggestions…is there a workaround?
Fake news. You will automatically get a pro-rated refund when you downgrade.
Will I still get Pro rated refund on annual fee even though inused my $300 travel credit.
Yes
Approved, Thanks!
now can we have this offer next year when my wife is 48mnths from reserve bonus?
I got this message,
“We need to review your request a little longer. We will let you know of our decision as soon as possible.”
what does it mean? should I call chase?
You can. Or you can wait.
I was denied so I called up and they said I have to wait 30 days to apply when I close a sapphire card.
Nope, as the post says you need to wait 2 days.
Random Q: Someone in my household helped me pass my spending threshold, the deal was I would send them the points that they would have made had they used their own card. However, the card that he normally uses and would have used for his purchases is an Amex platinum. I would like to pay him back with Chase Points but don’t know what the ratio would be. If you can please enlighten me.
I certainly value Chase points more than AMEX, but it’s tough to put an exact ratio on it.
Why do you value them more than Amex? Aren’t Amex harder to accumulate? Especially with their one bonus per lifetime policy
Because of better transfer partners, 1.5 cents towards travel, PYB, etc
Applied for my wife who only has 1 authorized user card reporting on her credit score. Got declined right away but called recon and got it. Thanks!
Congrats!
Quick question: i logged on to my chase account online and i don’t see any mention of the bonus points (like how much more i have to spend). does that mean that I didnt get the offer or does it just take time to update?
thanks
Takes time to update.
k thanks
Would I get the bonus if I upgrade a chase freedom card to preferred?
Also do you have any sense of how long this will go on for?
No and no.
Ever get 400 comments in a post ?
Chase told me I can’t apply because I have a chase sapphire reserve card.
FYI… I havent opened a new chase card in over 4 years, and havent opened any credit cards in last 24 months.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/becoming-eligible-sapphire-preferreds-mega-bonus-year-freedom-freedom-flex-freedom-unlimited/
If I use pay-yourself-back to pay for purchases I made as part of my initial $4k of spending, will that spending then not count towards the $4k to get the 100k points?
It will still count.
Dan – Got approved for CSP. Do you have any referral code or promo code for plastiq to signup and use the CSP for mortgage payments ?
Just applied! Hope I get accepted 🙂
I just got approved, is there any reason for my wife not to apply as well(she’s under 5/24)?
None, 2 player mode is why we got married at 23 and 21 😀
Lol thats great!
And 1 more q if I make her an authorized user under my ccs, I’m going to have to call chase manually to explain that shes really under 5/24 in order to get accepted?
Right, but only if that AU card put her over 5/24.
Thanks!
Is there any way to refer someone for the sapphire reserve and for them to get the 100k bonus? Because all my referral links say the 80k bonus?
No, but we certainly would appreciate it if you use our link in this post 🙂
Iyh tom I will
Hi Dan, if I apply for the sapphire am I able to upgrade to the reserve instantly? And if i upgrade does my calendar year for the reserve start by the date I upgrad, or is it continued from the original date of the sapphire?
Upgrade which card to Reserve? Your wording ia confusing as there are 3 versions of Sapphire, regular, Preferred, and Reserve.
Upgrading from the Preferred
Thinking of applying for myself but already got 2 chase cards in the past 6 months. Is it gonna ruin my score by applying for another card in such a short amount of time? (I’m still under 5/24)
Thanks
It will not.
thanks dan
applied a few days ago got the 30 day message, logged onto my existing account today and see the card is there
Congrats!
Thanks Dan! Applied via link..got pending decision called and got approved.
Congrats!
I was denied for the preferred card because I didn’t wait 3 days after I closed my reserve card. When can I apply again. I got an auto response saying it was denied and I will get a response in the 7-10 business days. Do I have to wait the 7-10 days or can I apply in 3 day.
2 days from closure/downgrade.
My wife signed up when it was 80,000 miles. Can she call up and get the difference.
She can try, but it’s highly unlikely.
Does the $4k need to be spent within 3 months of being approved or the card actually being activated? If the latter and I delay activating, could the promo time run out early? Basically I have a big expense that will need to be paid for in September (can’t prepay) and want it to count in the $4k but it’s slightly too early to start the 3 months now. Am hesitant to wait to apply since who knows how long the offer will be around.
Approval date. You can ask Chase for the cutoff date, typically it’s about 103 days.
Thanks. You’re the best!
I BH got approved with your link,
Always Happy to support this website.
Thanks Dan!
Thank you and congrats!
My wife got a email she is prequalified for the chase sapphire card in she was not approved what can I do now?
Prequalified doesn’t mean approved.
Call Chase.
I just (on 6/9 @3:30EST) downgraded both my preferred and reserve cards. How soon can I apply for the reserve with the 100k signup bonus? Thanks
Anytime Friday should work.
Thanks!
Just got denied. Called in and they told me it was because I have a reserve. Obviously that’s not true. What should I do? H u c a?
When did you downgrade your Reserve?
I applied yesterday they told me I need to speak to the fraud department what does this mean?
I’d wager that means you need to call them.
If I apply through a 80k link, do u think I if u call chase after they will match the 100k?
They are not matching offers.
My chase is no longer offering me to offer a household user to transfer points to? I can’t transfer the points to from my wife’s account to my account? Does anyone else have this problen?
Call Chase to transfer.
Applied via link..got pending decision what’s the number that I can call?
What number do I call to downgrade my chase sapphire?
It’s on the back of your Sapphire card
Dan,
Just got approved using your link on Sunday morning!
Called 888-338-2586 to downgrade my old sapphire to freedom.
Thanks,
Sam
IS THIS CARD WORTH GETTING, IN REGARDS TO THE PERKS AND ALL. IS IT WORTH THE 95$ FEE, IF YOU DONT REALLY USE CREDIT CARDS SO MUCH
You get $1,000-$1,500+ for signing up. That’s worth a lot more than $95 in my book 😀
But that only pays off for the first year. Then you’re pay $95 AF for what…?
Change to a no-fee card.
I was thinking about signing up for the csr in the next few months. But with such a high sign up bonus I’m thinking of signing up for the csp now, and in a few months doing a product change to the csr. What’s the minimum time I should wait to do a product change?
Don’t have any other Chase UR cards?
No. Should I sign up now and do product change in a few months? How long do you think I need to wait?
12 mouths
When someone referred me to the card and I used his link, only the previous promotion of 80k showed up, does it makes sense that I cant get the 100k if I use the referral link?
Yes, why would you apply for 80K when there’s 100K? Different links have different offers.
I downgraded my Reserve so that I can apply for this. It has been suggested that I later upgrade my new Sapphire preferred or my downgraded (reserve) back up to a Reserve. Is there a reason I should do that instead of just doing a product-change reversal on the Reserve that I downgraded?
No difference.
Thank you!!!!
I downgraded my CSR to the Flex because I have the other 2. I waited 2 days and applied and approved after one additional question.
On top of the 100K points, I got a refund of almost $200 from the annual fee (and that is after I already got a $300 in travel credit), so win win win!
Score!
if i had downgradet my prefered to a freedem last year can i apply again in get the bonus?
When did you last get a Sapphire bonus?
Shock of shocks, I just got approved for this card. I closed my prior Sapphire account >48 months ago and decided to try again. Not gonna close this account this time.
When referring someone for some reason it’s showing they only get the 80k how can I refer someone and they get the 100k bonus
You can’t, but we certainly would appreciate it if you use our link in this post
Dan
I downgraded my Saffire Reserve and then applied/approved for the Chase Saffire Preferred with 100k bonus . My question is if it makes sense for me to get a preferred card or to upgrade after I receive the bonus . My wife has the preferred but if it’s worth it I would get the preferred again
Can one apply for this card if one own’s a chase sapphire card already? If not, what is the next most advantageous card u’d recommend?
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/becoming-eligible-sapphire-preferreds-mega-bonus-year-freedom-freedom-flex-freedom-unlimited/
We already have a reserve but applied with my wifes name and she was approved. 1. Does being approved mean that you’re getting the points (obviously if you spend the min) 2. Is there a way to bring her account/points into my main chase account – the same what I have my business chase card appear in my main chase (reserve) account?
1. It does.
2. Sure, call Chase to transfer points.
Thanks! Any reason not to call and downgrade my reserve? Have a few hundred thousand points accumulated that we’d like to spend on travel at some point and dont want to jeopardize it in any way. Seems strange that chase even allows you to downgrade and then apply for a new card two days later… and then bump the downgraded card back up to reserve a couple months later.
Go for it!
When I switch my sapphire to a freedom, where will all my points from my sapphire go?
They stay alive with Freedom.
Is a year of credit history required to be approved?
I downgraded both my Reserve and Preferred (2 days ago). I want to be sure I’m doing this correctly. After I apply for the Preferred (sometime today), what’s the best way to get back into the Reserve? Should I upgrade the preferred in a few months?
You can upgrade from the Freedom back to Reserve after your Preferred is approved.
Dan, I have been approved for CSP. Any suggestions on how to meet spending threshold to get bonus ? Unfortunately plastiq does not accept visa for mortgage payments. Any insights would be appreciated.
Prepay upcoming bills?
Buy gift cards from stores you shop at?
Make a charity donation?
Applied two days after downgrade from CSR. Got denied but called reconsideration line and got approved. Thanks Dan!
Congrats!
is moving credit from from an a existing cc in order to get approved ( they claim that maximum credit was given already)considered pulling credit?
No
If I downgrade my CSR to a Freedom Flex, apply for the CSP + 100K point bonus (and get approved), can I then upgrade my CSP to a CSR? Is there anything wrong with doing that right away? Also If I do, can I transfer the points from my original CSR (that will be sitting on my Freedom Flex card) to that new CSR? Or, if I want to get those points to a new CSR, do I need to upgrade the Fredom Flex card I downgraded to?
Thank you.
my wife applied 2 days after downgrading her CSR and it was not instant approved. but we see a new Sapphire card added to her account few hour later 🙂
Nice!
I switched to Freedom with ultimate rewards from my csr today. Will that one work for the downgrade?—you mention flex and master card freedom unlimited in article for downgrade. I already had freedom unlimited and didn’t want to change numbers with flex since that’s a MC ad they’d have to change the csr Visa card number as well (all my auto pays :). If my downgrade to this freedom regular (5%/1,500) visa won’t do the trick, (to apply for this preferred in a few days) please lmk and I’ll unwind and go to the flex. Thanks. Shavua Tov when you read this.
That will work.
Thanks! Is it two/three calendar days to wait to apply on this preferred, or two business days? I did the downgrade to chase freedom Friday afternoon. Product change showed in my app login same say.
Just applied 3 days after downgrading my /sapphire to Freedom, and I was denied. How can i get them to reconsider?? thanks!
Call them.
At what number?
Downgraded to freedom on Fri, applied now and got “We need to review your request a little longer. We will let you know of our decision as soon as possible.” Do I call them? Wait for an email? Apply again in a day?
Same here.
Either way, up to you.
Got the same message. You can call 1-800-432-3117 and use their automated system to check without speaking to anyone.. I called a day later and it was approved
Applied using your link
Approved, after answering a few questions and moving around some credit line
Thanks
Congrats and thanks!
Can I spend 4,000 right away to qualify for the 100k points, then downgrade to another form (Freedom etc) to save the annual fee?
Not advisable to downgrade or close until 12 months have gone by.
Dan, once we receive the Bonus for CSP do you recommend that me and my wife have a CSR or just one of us ?
Probably one.
Chase closed my credit card account almost 2 years ago about a returned payment. Can I be approved. I have a good credit score?
No way to know unless you try.
My credit score dipped a bit in the last month or 2 due to credit limit increase requests that got denied. My credit score is still upwards of 750-770. Should I wait a few days until chase updates my credit score for this month, which will hopefully raise my credit score a bit, or should I apply for the preferred now in case the 100k onus offer expires?
They declined. I called reconsider & they said FICO # isn’t an issue but want POI (Proof of Income) & they’ll send me an e-mail so I can send them the data. How many of you have got that?
Any way to use card before it arrives?
Hi Dan, my wife got approved last night using your link. I currently have Chase freedom unlimited and a CSR. Can I switch my wife’s points to my freedom unlimited and then to my CSR to get it to be worth ¢2.25 towards travel?
Sure!
I know you said not advisable to downgrade or close until 12 months have gone by by what about upgrading the preferred back to a CSR? if yes do i need to wait to spend the 4k on pref and then upgrade?
You can, though you may find that some reps won’t upgrade a new card for 12 months.
Thanks Dan – got approved w/ ur link after calling recon!
FYI to all those out there, I got a denial with this message:
Thank you for applying for a new CHASE SAPPHIRE Visa Signature account. We’re sorry, but we did not approve your request.
– You already have the maximum amount of credit we can offer you
– Your current amount of credit is enough in relation to your income
I had 2 cards each w/ 5k limit that i never used (freedom and freedom unl). I asked them and they canceled one of them and approved me with a 5k limit on the sapphire!
Nice!
a rep told me that it would take 30 days before the downgrade would take effect- is that true? according to the post it’s just 2 days
The post is accurate.
I want to apply for this with a brand new credit line. It has a good score (around 730 I think) but no history. It has a discover student card but only for a few months.
Any chance I’ll get approved?
No way to know if you don’t try and then call.
Thank you Dan!
You hit me in the right minute! I just now had an $8K expense, and right before I paid it off, I saw this post! I opened one for my wife, and one for me, and swiped them 1/2-1/2 to get the max out of it…!
(I btw called in to ask them to overnight the new card, yet, they claimed that a new card couldn’t be rushed, so I asked them to send a new card under ‘old card lost’.. and I got it express! The original new card will arrive in the mail later than the replacement…)
Q: I swiped the $4K already. How long will it take for the points actually to be available for use? I want to use it towards paying the balance, so I get the max $$ out of the points ($1200).
Or do you have a better way to max the benefits out of the points? (Not planing a hotel stay soon…)
Thank again!!
Points will post at statement close.
What’s your best suggestion on how to get the most $ out of the points?
(I’m not traveling much, and I dont usually play with points, miles, etc.)
Thanks again!
1. If I downgraded Friday afternoon my csr to Freedom am I good to go, or is it wait 2-3 business days to apply for this csp card?
2. Also, by downgrading csr to freedom does that count as part of 5/24 for that or know b/c I just changed card ‘product type?
thanks!
1. Good to go.
2. It does not count against you.
thanks.. applied with your link of course – “We need to review your request a little longer. We will let you know of our decision as soon as possible. Thank you for choosing the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.”
How long is the wait typically? Any advantage to calling them to process faster, etc.? Last time we had to move credit from another card, since chase already giving a lot of credit via others. (low utilization though)
No harm to call if you want it sooner. Otherwise, it can take a couple weeks.
I called. Approved! Spent about an hour going through two levels. (Had ID theft about two years ago and had to unfreeeze experian for credit pull). Ironic because in the end they approved without increasing credit limit by pulling avail credit from other cards. Small bummer I guess that score goes down when credit pull was irrelevant in the end it seems. But have high score and happy to be approved!
Now;
1) is it assumed to get the 1.5 csr exchange it’s a “must” to switch the freedom back to csr? Btw, I was 450 af. Assuming I will now be 550 at csr due to this process.
2) if I switch it back freedom to csr too soon will that impact my eligibility on this new csp card 100k bonus with two cards sapphire in any way?
3) And do I need to do the switch back within the 30 days wherein they said you can unwind the csr switch I did to freedom?
Thanks. Was happy to use your link!
I opened a INK Preferred (with your link:)) 2 weeks ago and am trying to meet the spending of 15k, but my credit limit is 5k.
I remember you stating that if i pay up in middle of the month and continue to spend, it’s a red flag.
How can i meet the spending without worries of shutting me down?
Can you transfer credit from another card?
The system may let you go a bit above $5K.
Can i transfer credit from the New United Quest (that i opened the same day, with your link!)?
Probably not, as consumer and business credit are typically separate. Can’t hurt to ask though or ask for a bit more credit to meet the spending threshold.
Will asking for a bit more credit pull my credit again?
FYI: I have only one credit pull for both cards even though it’s a business and personal.
Hi- Can I get this card to track business expenses or is a business card the better route. It’s more to help categorize than to maximize any one specific category (shipping, travel, etc.) Also, grocery credits and restaurants won’t really be helpful for my work from home position. Please advise. TY!
Just use software for tracking?
Software doesn’t help me accumulate points …..
is anything rung if i applied on the 10th and still didn’t get back to me (also if somebody knows how much dose my income have to be? can i say what ever i want, or they check it up?)
Dan – I recently opened a preferred for my wife and I have had a reserve for over 4 years. I was planning on upgrading my wife to the reserve, downgrading my reserve into a freedom and then applying for a preferred. Chase said my wife can’t upgrade to a reserve bc she needs to have the preferred for at least a year before upgrading. Is that a rule?
Yes, though it’s not always enforced.
Either way, you can upgrade your Freedom back to Reserve after Preferred approval.
I can’t. Then I’d have a reserve and a preferred for me. I’m trying to ensure that either my wife or I always have a reserve. You’re suggesting HUCA might work?
You’re allowed to have both.
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/faqs-becoming-eligible-chase-sapphire-preferreds-deal-year-late/
I’m downgrading my sapphire to a freedom so that i can apply for a preferred on my account. I’m trying to upgrade my wife to a reserve from a preferred so that one of us has a reserve. According to their rules of not upgrading within a year from preferred to reserve mi ma nafscach it won’t work for me or my wife. So my only option is HUCA right?
Not following. Why can’t you upgrade freedom to reserve?
Because both my wife and I will have preferreds opened in the last two months (I’m downgrading to freedom just so I can open a preferred). What they’re telling me is if I’ve opened a preferred within the last year they won’t let me upgrade to a reserve.
False. You may run into reps that won’t allow product changes on new cards, but that’s all.
Okay thanks. I’ll HUCA
I just got my wife the Preferred. I have the Reserve and I should be eligible for the Preferred after I downgrade. Is it worth keeping the Reserve and transferring all points to my account so they are worth more with my Reserve? Or does it make more sense to get the Preferred then upgrade back to a Reserve after 12 months or so?
Downgrade to Freedom, get the Preferred, upgrade Freedom to Reserve at any time you want.
Dan
I opened about a year ago a chase united card. can i still apply for this preferred offer?
Sure!
Question about the $4000 spend requirement. We currently live in an all inclusive apartment setting (we pay no utilities, insurance is minimal, eat out often), so the $4k requirement may be a challenge especially with the somewhat limit travel available to us at the moment.
I wonder if I for example, buy a refundable vacation package that’s 100% cancellable till end of 2022 for $4k, would I get the 100,000 now? And will they claw back the bonus points if/when I did cancel next year (assuming I don’t meet the spending requirement through normal expenses). I realize this seems a bit risky?
I welcome any guidance.
While that would work and they don’t claw back, there is still the risk of being on their bad side.
Approved yesterday on this csp via your link after moving from other cards credit!
1. You seem to suggest moving freedom back to csr. Is that something that usually is a no brained with the added .25 on redemption? (I have about 200k in points).
2. They said something about I have 30 days to switch back to csr when I switched it to freedom. To reverse the product change. Is that true? If I do that now will it impact the csp on the way, or bonus? Or better to keep freedom and new csp, and wait a little bit?
Fwiw I had csp at 450 af. Thanks for all the great advice here.
1. You’ll have to run the math yourself taking into account the benefits and what you’re redeem. It’s not a no-brainer.
2. You can do that once approved.
Thanks. On point 2. CSP approved and I see it in app login.
If I DON’T reverse the Freedom back to the CSR within 30 days will I need to wait 12 months to turn it back in to CSR — I ask because you’ve mentioned they frown on not keeping a product for 12 months in some replies? Thanks.
Or is only advantage that l I get to keep the 450af – vs going to $550.
Nope, no need to wait. The 12 month rule is only for new card approvals.
got it..so since this was a product change, I can switch back to CSR in 3 or 4 months if I choose to without any negative view from Chase.. Thanks again for all the great advice.
Other than the redemption/pay yourself back at .25 more and 3 vs 2 on Dining, other benefits currently have limited value to me on CSR so will likely wait to see if I start to travel more later this year to go beyond the CSP.
btw, your awesome ultimate comparison link still shows 50K on CSP – I love this chart-
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/ultimate-comparison-chart-chase-ultimate-rewards-cards-supercharge-earnings-creating-killer-quinfecta/#What_cards_do_you_have_in_your_killer_combo
Makes sense.
Updated version of that post and chart here:
https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/ultimate-comparison-chart-chase-ultimate-rewards-cards-supercharge-earnings-creating-chase-quinfecta-killer-combo/
Nice — btw, A.D.D. me loved the Red color for the best in class by category on each. 🙂
So theoretically can have both the CSP and CSR
Sure
