A game-changing announcement

On Sunday, Citi made a surprise announcement that ThankYou points will be transferrable to American through 11/23. While Citi points transfer to JetBlue, this is Citi’s first mileage transfer option to a domestic airline that offers the ability to receive outsized value when redeeming miles. Citi’s international partners can book travel on domestic airlines, but foreign carriers can be difficult to reach and their awards may carry fuel surcharges.

It’s something that many people had hoped would happen for years, but never materialized. But a limited time partner transfer is something that we’ve never heard of before. Will it really go away?

I reached out to Citi to find out if the partnership may extend past 11/23 and they responded that, “On background, we cannot provide details into any longer-term transfer partnership with AA. That said, AA is a long-standing Citi partner and we are both continuously exploring ways to add value to our customers.”

That sounds promising if you ask me, but only time will tell. Even if transfers to American don’t stick around, perhaps it will come and go as a limited time transfer offer in the future?

Despite the limited time offer, I wouldn’t advise transferring points to American, where they would be subject to devaluation, without being ready to book an award ticket. Better off waiting until 11/23 and see if there’s any news about the transfer option sticking around and deciding then if you should transfer over any miles.

Between transfers to airlines like American, Turkish, and Qantas, Citi ThankYou points look a lot more valuable. Best of all, it’s easy to rack them up!

Citi’s powerful card lineup

There are 4 currently available Citi cards that are worth focusing on to rack up ThankYou points:

Turkish Airlines:

As I’ve written about before, Turkish Airlines has a ridiculously generous Star Alliance award chart.

And they don’t charge any fuel surcharges for United flights.

Here is the North America version of the chart with one-way award pricing:

Between the US and:EconomyBusinessFirst
US, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and USVI7.5K12.5KN/A
North America10K15KN/A
Europe30K45K67.5K
Middle East32K47K68.5K

Central Asia 34K52.5K77K

As part of the Star Alliance, Turkish can book award travel on airlines like United and Air Canada.

You can open a Turkish Airlines mileage account online (Hint: Your password must be exactly 6 numbers or else it will give an error).

And you can book Star Alliance awards with Turkish miles here (Login and then click this link again). You can’t search for partner awards from their home page. Search for one-way at a time for best results.

For example you can transfer miles to Turkish Airlines to fly from the US to Tel Aviv on United for just 32K points, or 28.8K points in coach after the 10% rebate with a Rewards+ card:

Or 47K points in Polaris business class (42.3K after the 10% rebate with a Rewards+ card):

There are lots of other bargains, all of which will be 10% less with a Rewards+ card:

I am unable to transfer my double cash ty points to my Premier card ty points. Do I have to call in?

robertw

I am excited about this, especially if it goes longer than November. Clearly this is an initial test. CIti Doublecash to Premier and directly to miles is a great valuation the way I see it I used ot be really big with AA and redemptions. Trying to load my AA for hopefully future award travel.

BT

I like what citi has been doing(I believe they poached an executive from chase?) and I hope they continue the trend with a refreshed prestige- I believe they can get many disgruntled Plat holders.

Also, let’s not forget that AA is going dynamic in a few months which is almost certain to be a devaluation.

Dave

Dan, what value do you give Citi points as compared to Chase UR? I have CSP, Freedom Flex, Unlimited, United Explorer, Ink Cash, Marriott) . The main reason I’d even think of getting anything else, is the fear of all my eggs in one basket and getting shut down by Chase!! That would destroy my credit. TIA!

Corinthians

What’s the chances of Citi shutting you down for making multiple.50 cents transactions every day? Any dp?

BT

Yes Don’t abuse it I’ve heard of a shutdown

S

“This card automatically rounds up rewards earned on every purchase to the nearest 10 points, meaning you earn 10 points on a $0.50 Amazon balance reload”
Genius way to get people swiping tons of small charges, and Citi makes more than that on the swipe fee.

Abey

Citi premier has long been the best everyday card IMO with groceries, gas, and dining. How does Citi know who’s in my “household “. ? Since I can’t get the rewards plus bonus I’d get it for my wife

Glushtygiz

All these destinations and flights seem great but these countries seem like they’ll be closed forever

Joe

Hi, How much is a AA point worth?

robert.weisberg@gmail.com

When people assign a dollar value to regular air miles I do not. Earning Citi Double and using those as air miles with Premier I get value. I dont use for domestic coach. International business and first class. That is how you get value

moe8555

Hypothetically, not more than the cost to purchase the amount of miles net of CC spend accrual from the purchase…

CtownBin

Do I understand correctly that the Custom Cash is different from the rest of the ThankYou cards, in that you can get the signup bonus even if you’ve opened or closed another ThankYou card in the previous 24 months?

Jay

Can u transfer points between cards and or spouses like Chase?

R

how fast to miles go from citi to turkish?

Saul

Just to clarify, when you refer to “households” there is no official connection as far as Citi is concerned and one household member cannot get a 10% point rebate on his Premier card transfers just because another household member has the Rewards+ card. Would that be correct?
