The Big Island’s Kilauea Volcano had been quiet for a few years, but it has came back with a vengeance and the pictures are amazing!

The Kīlauea summit eruption continues from the west vent within Halema‘uma‘u crater

I got to see Kilauea erupting back in 2009 and can’t wait to go back to see it again!

JJ’s brother in law was in Hawaii this week and took this beautiful picture of the eruption:

Using Chase Points:

You can pay for the ticket with “hybrid points” such as AMEX or Chase points with a card that allows your points to be used at an increased value for airfare in addition to be able to transfer points into airline miles.

If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card you can redeem points for 1.5 cents each towards travel. If you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Ink Preferred you can redeem points for 1.25 cents each towards travel.

You can login to your account and redeem Chase points for travel here. The cost will be 6,600 points with a Sapphire Reserve. That rate include all taxes and you will still earn flight miles as well!

Using AMEX points:

You can login to your account and redeem AMEX points for travel here.

This is bookable for 8,775 points with AMEX. Plus you’ll get back a rebate of 3,071 points with the Business Platinum Card or 2,194 points with the Business Gold Card, dropping the total needed to as low as 5,704 points. That includes all taxes and you can still earn miles for flying!

Dan’s Note:

Want to read more about Hawaii?

My love of Hawaii began 15 years ago when I posted and grabbed a deal paying just $87 for airfare and hotel.  Since then I’ve been lucky enough to spend several months between the stunning islands, which each offer a unique and wonderful experience.  You can’t go wrong with any of them, there are just 2 things is to be careful of.

Always a good day in Maui #MauiNoKaOi

1. Don’t get stuck in Honolulu. I’ve heard from too many people who spent an entire week and never left the city limits.  That’s just a shame, they may as well have gone to Miami Beach.  While I prefer The Big Island, Kauai, and Maui to Oahu, there is still plenty to see and experience on Oahu as long as you leave Honolulu behind.
2. Don’t try to “do” several islands in a week. If you just have 4-7 days of vacation then you should stick to one island. There will be plenty to do to keep you busy and it will allow for some time to relax. There’s no need to add the stress of interisland travel just for the sake of “doing” another island. With 9 days or more to play with, it does make sense to experience more than 1 island.

As for which island is best, read on and decide for yourself!  If you ask 5 people you’ll probably get 6 different answers 😀

Or… you could just book direct on AA because its one of their daily deals.

The test will need to be taken no more than 72 hours before your flight departure time.

Chaim

Doesn’t deserve a smoking hot imho recently had PHL for 220 RT and west coast frequently has such deals

Dave

I agree with Dan. Chaim, did you spend 4 hours eating a salami sandwhich waiting for your connection in Salt Lake City?

Bubba

If the Chase portal is used, are those Chase points refunded if a person decides not to take the flight? Same rules for American award cancellation?

Dave

I heard a rumor that Hawaii is no different than an Atlantis hotel room in the Bahamas ;P

Jcity

What is the quarantine protocol when arriving in Hawaii? I’ve heard it’s one of the strictest in the country. Is there even a point of visiting if you’ll be locked in your hotel the whole time?

iahphx

Great fare, but you’re also buying a Covid travel problem. Perhaps worth a shot for May if you live in one of the cities with sub-$100 fares. Perhaps you can get vaccinated by then and Hawaii will accept a “vaccination passport.” Or at least by then get an affordable and fast Covid test. And I guess you can cancel and get an AA travel credit. Personally, I’d wait for more clarity and, likely, the summer.

The covid testing is not as complicated as one might think. I’m going to Hawaii on Sunday and I live in NYC. Walgreens did the test for free and sent me the results within 3 hours of taking the test.

Chaim

Be careful needs to be with 72 hours of arrival

A

72 hours is no problem when the results come so quickly

Amex

the chicago tickets in march are coming up as 198?
