United Adding Service To Several Asia-Pacific Cities!

United is by far the most exciting US carrier in adding service to unique and far-flung destinations across the globe. This summer they will add flights to Greenland, Sicily, Madeira Island, Mongolia, and more

The airline announced today that they will add service this fall from:

  • San Francisco-Adelaide, Australia with 3 weekly seasonal 787-9 flights starting December 11th. That will make United the only airline with nonstop service between the US and 4 Australian cities.
  • Hong Kong-Bangkok, Thailand with daily 787-9 flights starting October 26th.
  • Hong Kong-Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam with daily 787-9 flights starting October 26th.
  • San Francisco-Manila, Philippines will increase from 1 to 2 daily 777-300ER flights starting October 25th

In the past, United operated an extensive intra-Asia network from Tokyo and Hong Kong, including service to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, but then eliminated all of those flights over the years. Those are now coming back with a vengeance, with United offering service from Tokyo to Koror, Palau; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; and Cebu, Philippines, and now intra-Asia service from Hong Kong.

While the Tokyo flights are operated by narrowbody aircraft, the Hong Kong flights will take advantage of the widebodies that have downtime in Hong Kong while they wait to turn around to the US.

My wife and I flew from Hong Kong to Bangkok some 15 years ago as part of a round-the-world first class award ticket, where we also explored Chiang Mai and Phuket. It’s an amazing country to experience, with incredible sights and things to do at affordable prices, plus Chabad Houses with delicious kosher restaurants in several cities.

Many doubted that a US carrier could profitably operate nonstop service from the US mainland to the Philippines, which United previously only served from Guam and Palau. However, that route has been a massive success, and will incredibly double daily service on its flagship 777-300ER aircraft on the route.

The new flights to Adelaide and Manila are already on sale, while the Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City flights will be available at a later date.

United will now offer service to 32 cities in the Pacific region, which is quadruple that of any other US airline.

With Air Canada And Avianca Lifemiles Devaluing United Awards, Turkish Miles Are Having Another Moment With Incredible Award Bargains

Not long ago, Turkish Airlines miles were the go-to for cheap Star Alliance award travel. Then they had a brutal devaluation, but some sweet spots remained.

Still, with programs like Air Canada and Avianca Lifemiles offering bargains on United, there wasn’t much need for Turkish miles.

But United has been cracking down on partner award bargains. Last year, they started blocking some saver award space from partner airlines. In February, Lifemiles devalued award rates on United. And last week, Air Canada devalued award rates on United as well.

All of that makes Turkish look quite valuable again for domestic travel on United, which includes Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the USVI as Turkish charges a flat 10K miles in coach or 15K miles in first class for domestic flights.

I’m not going to get into the ethics and politics about whether you should be using Turkish miles, if it means major savings on United travel. I’ll just discuss what’s possible to do, and everyone can make their own decisions about what to do with that information. At the rates they’re charging for some of these tickets, it may even be a loss leader for their program as a whole, but those numbers aren’t public.

Targeted: Transfer AMEX Points To Etihad And Get A 20% Bonus; Award Bargains On AA, El Al, JetBlue, Etihad Apartment, And More!

Transfer points from AMEX to Etihad by 4/30 at 11:59pm MT and you will get 20% bonus miles. Check your AMEX transfer page to see if you are targeted. My wife and I were both targeted for 20%, but some commenters are also reporting a 10% or 15% bonus.

Etihad has a distance-based award chart for partner airlines, like AA and El Al. You’ll have to call Etihad to book some partner award flights, such as El Al.

Two huge caveats with Etihad miles are that the award cancellation fees are usurious and miles will now expire after 18 months, unless you credit a flight to the program.

American:

A short-haul flight on AA up to 500 miles in distance is just 6K miles in coach, or 5K AMEX points with a 20% bonus.

NYC to Europe on AA is 45K in coach, 49K in premium, or 80K in business class, excluding the 20% bonus.

JetBlue:

  • NYC to/from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, or Vancouver is 50K Etihad miles in Mint business class, that’s just 41.6K AMEX points with a 20% bonus.
  • Fort Lauderdale to/from Las Vegas or Los Angeles is 50K Etihad miles in Mint business class, that’s just 41.6K AMEX points with a 20% bonus.
  • NYC to/from Dublin, London, Madrid, or Paris is 80K Etihad miles in Mint business class, that’s just 66.6K AMEX points with a 20% bonus.

El Al:

One-way rates on El Al, excluding the 20% bonus:

  • Larnaca to Tel Aviv will cost 6K coach, 7.5K premium, or 10K business each way.
  • Athens to Tel Aviv will cost 12K coach, 13K premium, or 20K business each way.
  • Budapest, Dubai, Rome, or Vienna to Tel Aviv will cost 15K coach, 19K premium, or 30K business each way.
  • Milan or Zurich to Tel Aviv will cost 23K coach, 25K premium, or 40K business each way.
  • London or Paris to Tel Aviv will cost 28K coach, 31K premium, or 50K business each way.
  • Boston or NYC to Tel Aviv will cost 67K coach, 74K premium, or 120K business each way.
  • Fort Lauderdale, Miami, or LA to Tel Aviv will set you back 75K coach, 90K premium, or 140K business each way.

A 20% bonus will make those rates much better. NYC to Tel Aviv will cost 55.8K AMEX points in coach, 61.6K AMEX points in premium, or 100K AMEX points in business each way.

Etihad apartments:

You can spend 160,000 Etihad miles (133.3K AMEX points) plus $544 to fly one-way in Etihad 787 first class or 200,000 Etihad miles (166.6K AMEX points) for an Etihad A380 first class apartment.

Note that the A380 operates the JFK to Abu Dhabi route through June 23rd. It will move to Toronto to Abu Dhabi on June 24th. A380 First class apartments run 200,000 Etihad miles (166.6K AMEX points) plus $562.

Those planes feature first class apartments that have a seat and a bed, along with a shower to boot.

I enjoyed flying it on my way home from the Maldives in 2017.

American announced today that Fiji Airways will adopt AAdvantage as their loyalty currency.

While several airlines use Avios as their currency, they each maintain their own award charts and quirks. In this case, Fiji will hand everything off to AAdvantage.

Copa Airlines used to do this with Continental and then United, before realizing they would be better off having their own program.

AAdvantage members will have benefits on Fiji including priority check-in, priority boarding, complimentary baggage allowance, preferred seats, and enhanced award redemption.

Hopefully that will mean more award seats, as long haul business class seats have been rare aside from occasional release glitches. More likely is that we may see dynamic (read: enhanced) pricing for Fiji awards, similar to awards for travel on American.

Fiji Airways will also become a full OneWorld member next year. The airline serves 27 destinations in 15 countries:

  • Australia: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney
  • Canada: Vancouver
  • Fiji: Nadi, Suva
  • Kiribati: Kiritimati, Tarawa

You can get a 20% bonus for point transfers from Chase to BA, Iberia, or Aer Lingus Avios. You can also transfer BA Avios to Finnair Avios or Qatar Avios, where you can redeem awards for fewer miles. You can combine Avios via this link via the BA site.

With this bonus 1,000 Chase points transfers into 1,200 Avios. This promotion runs through 3/31 at 11:59pm ET.

Chase last offered a 30% bonus to Avios in October 2024 and September 2023.

You can also get a 20% bonus to Avios from AMEX or Citi.

In general, you shouldn’t transfer miles unless you have short-term plans to redeem them for flights.

Avios aren’t what they used to be. British Airways seems to devalue them every few months, bringing them from first to worst in no time.

You can save with the Qatar award chart or the Finnair award chart, which is the only Avios program that doesn’t charge per leg flown, though both Qatar and Finnair recently devalued their Avios.

You can search for award availability using BA Avios here. Finnair or Qatar should be able to book any award space that you find using BA Avios for fewer Avios, but you may need to call them to book.

It can be tricky to book Qatar awards, so read this post first to learn all about Qatar Avios.
