Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Consumer Card

Limited time signup bonus:

For a limited time only, you can earn 100K Marriott bonus points for opening this card and spending $5,000 in 3 months.

Comparison to previous signup bonus:

The previous signup bonus on this card was 75K points for spending $3,000 in 3 months.

Annual fee:

There is a $95 annual fee, though the signup bonus and annual anniversary nights are worth well more than that.

Welcome bonus terms:

  • You won’t get the welcome bonus on this card if:
    1. You got a bonus on a Chase Marriott consumer card in the past 24 months.
    2. You have or had an active Starwood AMEX/Marriott Bonvoy AMEX Consumer card in the past 30 days.
    3. You were approved for any Starwood AMEX/Marriott Bonvoy AMEX card in the past 90 days
    4. You received a signup bonus for a Starwood Luxury/Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant AMEX or the Starwood Business/Marriott Bonvoy Business AMEX card in the past 24 months.

5/24:

All Chase cards appear to be subject to 5/24 restrictions, meaning that you are not likely to be approved if you have been approved for 5 or more consumer credit cards in the past 24 months. Note that the Chase system automatically counts cards like authorized user cards and store cards as cards that count towards 5/24, but if you explain to Chase that those cards are merely authorized user cards or store cards they can manually approve you for a new card.

You can check your credit report for free at the federally authorized annualcreditreport.com to check how many accounts are shows as being open in the past 24 months.

Card earnings:

  • 2 points per dollar everywhere
  • 6 Marriott points per dollar at Marriott hotels.
  • There are no foreign transaction fees.

Card protections:

  • Purchase protection covers items purchased up to $500 against theft or damage for 120 days.
  • Extended warranty protection adds an additional year on the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Car rental CDW insurance covers rentals in the US on a secondary basis and rentals outside of the US on a primary basis.
  • Trip delay reimbursement covers $500/passenger for expenses due to delays of 12+ hours.
  • Lost luggage reimbursement covers luggage lost or damaged, up to $3,000/passenger.

Spend threshold:

You’ll need to spend $5,000 on this card within 3 months.

You can pay your federal taxes for a 1.87% fee. If you overpay your taxes you can request a refund or apply it to your next year’s taxes.

My local natural gas company allows me to prepay up to $1,000 on a credit card for a $1.65 flat fee. That’s a great way to earn miles and help meet a spend threshold. My electricity supplier allows me to pay with a credit card for free as long as I am enrolled in autopay.

Airline transfer bonus:

You can transfer increments of 60K Marriott points into 25K airline miles or 27.5K miles with United.

Additionally, airlines often have their own bonuses for hotel point transfers. Currently American is offering a 25% bonus on hotel transfers. Aeroplan offers a bonus multiple times per year and United usually has an end of the year bonus as well.

Marriott has dozens of valuable airline transfer partners, such as Aegean, Alaska, American, Qantas, and dozens more! Alaska’s miles are extremely valuable and hard to get, making this a great transfer option.

Premium internet access:

Cardholders get free premium in-room internet at Marriott hotels.

Elite status:

This card offers Silver Elite status, which gives 10% bonus points, late checkout, and more.

If you spend $35K/year you will earn Gold elite status, which gives 25% bonus points, late checkout, room upgrades, a points amenity on paid and award stays, and more.

You will also get 15 elite night credits for having the card. You can only get 15 night credits per year, regardless of how many different Marriott cards that you have.

Anniversary night:

You will receive a free night upon every card anniversary valid at hotels that cost up to 35K points. Anniversary nights can be worth several times the annual fee on this card! Anniversary nights expire 12 months after they post to your account.

You can view all Marriott hotels with their point requirements here.

@dan If I currently have the Starwood AMEX/Marriott Bonvoy AMEX Consumer card. (I got it over 24 months ago, and I’m under 5/24). I need to close that card and then wait 30 days to get this one correct?

Yitzy

Dan do you know a good card that will work for cdw (car insurance) in Israel?

ME17

Dan-
Offer I have is for 5k spend for 3 night award e-certificates- each valued up to 35k points – is it better to go for 100k points for the 3 nights valued up to 105k total?

Yehuda_H

Are there any protections like travel/car insurance, price protection or warranty?

Yehuda_H

When does this offer expire?

Yona

@dan If I order this and hit the spending – any idea when the earliest I’ll be able to use the 100k points is?

ROY

What’s the meaning 15 elite night credit?

Louise

Dan, I’m a points newbie. Right now I have a Chase United card (a very old one that is no longer offered to new members) that earns United miles but we don’t fly United much any more. My husband has the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and he earns points that he uses to buy airfare. Am I better off getting the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Marriott Bonovoy? We don’t stay in Marriotts often but are the 100,000 points bonus something that I can use on airfare also? Can I put them into his account and combine them?

5/100

In lieu on Dan responding, if you are asking which promotion is better, get the sapphire preferred for the 60,000 point bonus. It has the value of 90,000 points when you transfer the points to your husband’s reserve account and you use for travel rewards (you can cancel after the promotion assuming your husband keeps his reserve card). Also, you and your husband should apply for a Chase Freedom Unlimited for everyday day spending. It’s a free card that you get 1.5 points per dollar. When you transfer the points to your husband’s reserve account they will have the value of 2.25 points per dollar when use for travel rewards.

ckmk47

You (as a couple) already have the Sapphire Reserve so you don’t need the Preferred. (Unless you each need a card in your pocket for spending and you don’t want to pay for an authorized user card.) The Marriott will give you hotel stays or can be transferred to airlines. Definitely the Marriot.

Y

What’s the real benefit of having this card other than the sign up point. Practically what type of consumer would this be best for?

Shaul Morrison

Should be noted that while the 35k point cert is enough to book a Cat 5 during standard or off-peak dates, it is not enough to book a Cat 5 for a peak date. Consequently, if you are considering a trip to a Cat 5, it is a good idea to book ASAP (assuming the cancellation policy is generous enough), as it could later become peak, making it ineligible for a cert booking). Unfortunately, Cat 6 is still too high, even for an off-peak date.

Mutty

I already have a Marriot card. If I go for this one, will I still get the bonus?
