Flights from Boston, Dallas, San Diego, or San Francisco to Singapore are also available for $417-$441 round-trip.

You can search for valid dates from all cities on Google Flights.

Singapore has excellent kosher food as well as a shul. You can read my 2013 trip notes on Singapore here. It’s also a great base to book a separate paid or mileage ticket to other countries in the region like Thailand.

You can use multi-city search to add a stopover in Tokyo for $100 extra.

These fares are not on sale with miles, but you can pay for the ticket with “hybrid points” if you have Chase points and a Business Platinum or Sapphire Reserve card.

If you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve® card you can redeem points for 1.5 cents each towards travel.

A $325.46 flight flight will be 21,697 points. That includes all taxes and you can still earn miles for flying!

Can I stopover in Tokyo?

EJ

Thank you, Dan! Can the stopover in Tokyo be any length? Would I need to make the reservation over the phone?

NICEEE

Just booked for two months

iahphx

Wow! How did you find this one?

Priceline wouldn’t ticket me, but Expedia did.

It’s gonna be a long flight in coach.

iahphx

BTW, I think there are days/flights than you indicate, perhaps at slightly higher fares (higher pfcs?) Some of the routings involve AA flights, but I can’t immediately think of a reason to want AA fares. Any idea how to credit these tickets for any substantial mileage? I’m thinking you could almost become gold elite on AA with crediting them to AAdvantage, but real miles would be better if you could get them.

Bochur

@ Dan
How many business platinum points do I need for this

Sir

I read the post completely. See there are many return dates from SIN to NY. Are there no floghts for this price outgoing in May?

iahphx

Not sure if it’s true, but USAToday voted JAL “best coach-class airline for intercontinental flights”:

Japan Airlines’ new-design Sky Wider economy seats provide the roomiest international economy class you can currently find. Contrary to what most other airlines are doing, JAL is sticking with eight-across seats in its 787s and nine-across in its 777s. That’s one fewer seat in each row than the current standard among most other lines, and the remaining seats are almost two inches wider than competitors’ seats.

The new cabins also offer an industry-leading 34-inch pitch, compared with the 30- to 32-inch pitch you find on most other intercontinental airlines. The onboard catering generally earns high marks, as well; economy travelers enjoy individual 10-inch screens, and the new 777s and 787s provide satellite-based Wi-Fi.

SIR

Tried to book flight in Sept. on Priceline. After entering all my info it said flight not available and brings me back to first page. Happened 10 times. Book flights with them all the time and never had this problem.

Ace

SIR, try expedia. Seems like it is getting repriced as we speak…

Rob

Tried all kinds of dates for February and getting notification that there’s nothing available

The rebbe

Booked JFK>SIN>LAX $343
Pricline error so booked on hotwire

Mr. V.

@SIR: having the same problem here… and calling them seems useless

Sushanth Sayneni

use amex travel if you have 100off amex offer. Same price on amex travel.

zow

Dan,
This doesn’t work with the Amex Business Platinum, does it? Only applies to “your selected airline, which is one of the US carriers. (Or in premium class, which this unfortunately is not).

Shimon

Hi Dan, which frequent flyer number is better to use with them to get more miles?

Mocha

Also remember that Singapore is only a hop, skip, and jump away from Thailand. Where you can get an affordable 10 hr massage, to get your back right again, after spending 20 hours in economy.

iahphx

@Sushanth Sayneni: Isn’t that AMEX offer limited to hotel stays?

Steph

Hi! Do you happen to know if JAL penalizes for skipping a connection? Will i be allowed to fly home from TYO to JFK if i don’t leave from SIN? Thanks!

iahphx

Correction: fare looks pretty useless for earning miles and or status on the major airlines (the EQM and EQD numbers at AA are just depressing). That said, the coach service on JAL does seem to be as good as it gets in the industry these days.

iahphx

@Steph: I always see this question, and it surprises me. NO airline will EVER let you skip a connection. It will void the remainder of your ticket, so you can only ever do it for the last flight segment (without checked luggage).

Anonymous

@iahphx: I actually did it without a problem with Silk Air this past December between Vietnam, Singapore, and Bali. It isn’t entirely unheard of, so reel in your surprise lol. I just am not clear if JAL allows it and their phone lines are currently clogged.

iahphx

@Anonymous: Calling JAL here to ask whether you can skip a middle segment of this $328 transpacific fare is EXACTLY like calling the White House and asking whether you can come to dinner tonight.

Dan's the Man

@iahphx:
Actually it will take the same exact time in Business or First.

Steph

@iahphx: That doesn’t change that I’ve done it WITH calling and asking first on Asian flights so I’m not sure why you’re making it a point to be so indignant at the idea. Move along. An idea of a constructive comment: I have flown JAL and it is a wonderful airline experience. Enjoy.

It’s dead now…couldn’t confirm on priceline and everywhere else showing $1k+. Boo. :~(

iahphx

@waterlilinyc@gmail.com:

I’m not so sure. Fare still comes up on momondo.com. Pick a reputable travel agency from their list and try to buy it. It at least gets you to the purchase page.

Thanks iahphx…I managed to book on jal.com!

MileHighBug

My AmEx Travel deal says it is only for hotels.

Steibe

BUMMER – I snooze, I lose.. Deal looks to be dead.

Checked last night around 11pm PST and was going to book SAN-NRT (10/11), HND-SIN (10/18-10/21), SIN-SAN (10/21) for around 40k Chase UR, but wasn’t sure if my better half could get off work. Should’ve pulled the trigger.

For future reference, if I use UR points to book via Chase’s portal, can the points be refunded if I were to cancel my trip/flight? I do have the Sapphire Reserve, so I don’t know if this changes things? Thanks!

Acorn

Dan, would I be able to earn miles to my AA account? If I put in my AA program info to my tickets?

Daniel

Hey Dan – sorry for being annoying. I booked through expedia today and it says I have a 24 hr window to cancel, but you say that I have until l 11:59pm PDT on Monday, 4/10.

What am I missing?

dhammer53

@Acorn you can get AA miles if you put your Advantage number on your PNR. You can also call and do this, or give the gate agent the information.
I’m going to credit the miles to my Alaska account. While the miles earned are less than AA, I find Alaska miles to be worth more than Americans. YMMV.

As @iahphx said, JL gets good marks. The seat pitch is 34″.
That’s the same as Uniteds E+.

You can book seats 72 hours in advance. 😉
