These should be banned. Smoke detector goes in the center of the ceiling and carbon monoxide detectors need to be below shoulders height. Everyone get separated units. Please.
It’s a myth that CO detectors need to be mounted low. Not only is CO slightly less dense than ambient air, it diffuses in to air evenly so detectors are totally fine being combined units, and can have ceiling placement.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 720, 2005 edition), states that all carbon monoxide alarms “shall be centrally located outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms,” and each alarm “shall be located on the wall, ceiling or other location as specified in the installation instructions that accompany the unit.”
