I wrote below that only 1 of my 2 Amazon accounts worked with this promotion.
Turns out I was able to get it to work today on my other Amazon account by adding $50 worth of gift cards to other stores sold by Amazon.
I tried adding $50 of Nordstrom, Southwest, and Starbucks gift cards and the $20 promotion worked for all of those, effectively making the cost of a $50 gift card just $30!
Not as good as $20 off $20 that worked on anything from my other account, but 40% off gift cards is not bad at all!
If the $20 off anything doesn’t work on your account, try adding one of those $50 gift cards to your cart, follow the instructions below, and share your experience in the comments.

You can link your American Express Membership Rewards card to your Amazon account by clicking here.
Once you do that just add anything $20 or more that is shipped and sold from Amazon to your cart. This won’t work for Amazon gift card purchases but it will work for gift cards that are good for other places like Nordstrom, Southwest, and Starbucks
At checkout select the Membership Rewards card that you linked, click on “choose a different amount,” and enter 0.01 as shown below:
On the next page enter the following promo code for $20 off $20 (Exp: 11/09): SWP20AMR
So for example with Monopoly Classic (because the “new” Monopoly stinks) that costs $21.94 when shipped and sold from Amazon you would get $20 off with the redemption promo code, you would use 1 point for 1 penny, and then you would pay $1.94 on your credit card out of pocket.
Of course you can use more that just 1 point if you want to, but the value is just criminal. You’ll do way better using them for travel or selling them on the grey market.

Nice! Purchased a $25 Starbucks gift card for $4.99 and 1 MR point. With Prime got the $1 book credit as well. 🙂

Two things I figured out. Make sure you hit the “apply” button for your points at the checkout screen. Then apply the coupon code. Also, this doesn’t seem to work if you have other promotions in your cart. I had a coupon I had “clipped”.

Need to add a promo code so it works for everyone, therefore not targeted. Put in SWP20AMR and it works; didn’t work without the code but, worked with the code and $.01 in Membership Rewards money. Also have to pay with your Amex card.

i called and they adjusted it for me “it shouldn’t really give you an error, let me apply it for you manually”
they will apply it manually if it doesn’t work. just call them (888) 280-3321 #2. anyone know why it doesn’t work on all accounts? can you link multiple MR accounts to one amazon account and apply the code or it’s per account?

It didn’t work for my Amex blue cash.
From the Amex site:
“Cards such as the Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card, Blue Cash® from American Express, Hilton Honors® Card from American Express, Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and JetBlue Card from American Express do not participate in the Membership Rewards program and are not eligible for Shop with Points.”

For some reason the only thing the code worked for was to purchase a non-amazon gift card. None of the other items I tried worked.
Code wasn’t working for me, so I got Amazon on chat while I put through the order and they reduced the item price by $20 once the order went through which therefore also lowered my tax = net benefit of more than $20 🙂

Code didnt work. Via Chat, they told me that it only work with items that Amazon sells directly (Not third party). I asked the agent if she could make a one time exception. She told me to process the order without the promo code and she applied a refund of $17.43 to my credit card.

I used AmEx Platinum Personal to buy a $50 Staples GC with the penny MR redemption and the code. Can you think of anything I’m doing wrong? Or does it just mean I’m not targeted?
