Even if it’s legal to get/carry in one place, make sure to consider what it may mean to take it to or via another jurisdiction. I’ve seen people denied the ability to fly to the US without a visa because they ended up with having a record for carrying pepper spray and being caught with the prohibited item either on arrival to another country or someone else turning them in despite it never having been used.

it is illegal to carry it within NY if it were not bought in NY, ie buying it in a legal state and bringing it in. I am wondering if there might be a legal issue at the airport in luggage or if discovered in my possession in NY…
I asked that question to a police officer cause straight up I told him I carry pepper spray cause I work at a awful hospital…..he said police won’t bother you, if you use it in self defense, but if you spray it in middle of a movie theater you can be arrested and fined!
