List price is $69.99…

May

Correct, it says List Price: $69.99

Mark

Does it need to be toiveled ?
Many of them sold at local stores
Don’t need to and come with a rabbinical certificate

IS

Yes, chefman does not have those certifcates

Most people Toivel an urn. This will almost always void any Warrenty. It can be dangerous, there are lots of electronics in the control board. However the way most people take care of it is to take it to a frum appliance repair place where a tech disables the urn by internally , for a minute and reconnects it. It is then considered a כלי הנעשה על ידי ישרא-ל, and doesn’t need to be Toiveled according to most if not all poskim. The best part is it’s actually safe and dry to use. It’s really ridiculous to immerse an electronic device when it will destroy it.

Need to be Toiveld??

Eve

From my research, if we purchase something from a non Jew, even if manufactured by a heimish company, it requires tevila.

Moshe

I bought this 2 weeks ago from Bed Bath and Beyond for $70 before applying a 20% coupon (so $56 final). It is out of stock there now, but regarding toiveling, I did toivel (dont know if I needed to or not) and let it sit for a week or so before using. Working fine now.

Ben

+1 on letting it sit a week before operating. BH, I’ve done this with every urn I’ve owned, and all have survived.

Mixed reviews on Amazon – anyone have an opinion on the quality, smell and residue/oxidation?

Ben

There is a internal tube that goes from the bottom of the inside chamber up to where the spout is. There is no good way to get the water out of it after use and before storage. It is that water that (in my opinion) that ruins the taste. Even from Shabbos to Shabbos, the water in the tube gets bad enough to ruin the taste of the entire contents of the urn. I’ve found that if you fill these, and manually pump out the water after storage, it cleans out that tube that is the source of the bad taste. When I take my urn out of storage before pesach, I use it to kosher my kitchen counters – I transfer the hot water from the urn to a kettle to finish the boiling and pour from the kettle onto the counters. Using it for this purpose cleans out the residual bad taste/odor that results from storing it and speeds up the koshering process too.

Nate

In for 1.
Will toivel it 7 times like the opinion of that other Rabbi.

If I toivel it, will I be able to use potato starch on Pesach?

Mikey

lol

moish

Awesome – perfect timing! Thanks Dan!!

I bought one from Amazon last year but it went completely dead after only a few months of once a week use. I will say though that Chefman honored their warranty and sent me a new one without too much of a hassle.

Chaim

Does this one have A SHABBOS mode?

Ben

I’m not sure what you mean by SHABBOS mode but the title says “w/ Auto & Manual Dispense Buttons”. Manual Dispense = you push down on a manual pump that channels air into the unit that forces water out of the spout. Auto Dispense = you can choose to electrically pump air to force the water out of the spout. Manual Dispense = Shabbos mode in my book.

Steve

Would anyone know if there are any Shabbos issues with this??

Bension

I owned this earn before and I have no issues and Shabbos with it.

BR

I have this urn for 5 years and the pump just broke and yes I have had issues with it smelling and the water tasting gross and I needed to heat vinegar in it several times before it went away.
I will not be repurchasing even at this price.

Helpful Tip

Just a tip while were on this topic. Sour salt is great for cleaning rust from any urn. Add some to the urn with water, boil & rust is gone.

Moshe

Anyone else have issues with the water smelling? Will that go away on it’s own or do I need to do something about that?
