Update: Flying Blue has extended this promotion for the same cities listed below from 02/28/09 to 03/31/09!

Originally posted on 01/01/09:

Starwood AMEX Linky (Free for first year, Earn 10,000 Starpoints With First Purchase, and 30,000 more Starpoints with your first $15,000 in purchases) The US Mint should be able to help you there…

AMEX Gold Charge Card Linky (Free for first year, Earn 10,000 AMEX MR Bonus Points after you spend $500.) AMEX MR points transfer to Flying Blue miles at 1:1.

20,000 Starwood Starpoints transfer into 25,000 Flying Blue (Air France and KLM’s joint loyalty program) miles.

That is all you will need to have to get to Israel or any other “European” destination in January or February!

S.B.S. previously made an excellent 8 page PDF examining every way of getting to Israel via Starpoints.

In that article he pointed ways of getting to Israel for 40,000 Starpoints or less (Via transferring Starpoints to JAL, British Airways, LAN, or Flying Blue)

For January/February there is a promo award to/from many cities in North America and Europe Zones 1, 2, or 3.

The promo award cost between North America and “Europe” in flying blue miles is:
Coach: 12,500 miles one way, 25,000 miles round trip.
Business: 22,500 miles one-way, 45,000 miles round trip.

Tickets must be booked by 02/26/09, and all travel must be completed by 02/28/09.

Valid North American cities for origin or destination:
Atlanta
Chicago
Dallas
Detroit
Houston (Coach promo award only)
Montreal
NYC/JFK
Toronto
Vancouver
Washington DC

This is how Flying Blue defines Europe:
Europe 1: Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Netherlands, and Switzerland
Europe 2: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden
Europe 3: Albania, Algeria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Libya, Latvia, Lithuania, Morocco, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Western Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Tunisia, Ukraine, and Yugoslavia

As Flying Blue considers Israel to be part of Europe (zone 3), it qualifies as a valid origin or destination.

The promo awards can only be flown with KLM via Amsterdam. that are not valid on Skyteam partners such as Continental or Delta (although nonstop travel to Israel on those carriers is allowed on the regular 40,000 Starpoints/50,000 Flying Blue miles award to Europe zone 3 in coach or 90,000 flying blue miles in business.)

Flying Blue Promo Award: January/February 2008

Unfortunately, you cannot search online for mileage availability on Flying Blue unless you have the required miles in your account.

A stopover in Amsterdam is allowed and will make finding mileage availability easier.

The best bet for checking availability will be by calling Flying Blue at 1-800-375-8723

Dan , I have alot of point’s on my “blue” from amex . Are they good for anything besides electronics?( don’t worry I already have starwood card(s)these are old points (: )

Anonymous

can you go the other way? meaning start off in one of the europe spots and travel to america?

DAVID

This is incredible! You can fly to Israel for the cost of flying somewhere domestic. A domestic ticket is usually 25,000 miles!! Wow, if only the available dates were a little better…

Dan/Ctownbochur

@Anonymous:
Yes, this is valid in either direction to or from Europe.

Mikeoracle

Dan,
Is there any way to use my Delta Miles for this promo since they are both part of Skyteam?

israeli

I’m trying to book TLV-JFK Jan. 15-21 and nothing is available. Every date I tried is unavailable. From TLV to Europe and from Europe to the states is available. Is there a trick on how to enter multiple destinations to make a stopover in amsterdam and from there to JFK and then back the same way? thanks in advance

yoel

The link does not go to the promo. How do I get started?

Dan/Ctownbochur

@Mikeoracle:
No.

@israeli:
Sure, call them up.

@yoel:
You need to enter a country, and then click the link again.

zev

I’d like to sign up for a starwood amex. What’s the best promotion out there to maximize the new card holder points?

Dan/Ctownbochur

@zev:
The link in the beginning of the post is the best available offer for the Starwood AMEX.

yoko

OK, so I sign up for a flyingblue account, then transfer starwood points or AE MR points?

yoko

Keep on getting this when trying to book:

For technical reasons, we are currently unable to respond to your request. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Dan/Ctownbochur

@yoko:
Try calling them up.
You should first find availability for flights that you want and putting it on hold before transferring Starpoints.

yoel

Every flight i look online from jfk-tlv it says unavailable.
You think if I call them it would be different?

FAYGEL

Flying Blue taxes and fees on award tickets are very high. Get a quote before you book. You will have to pay around 400.00 per ticket. They will not hold a reservation if you have no points in your account. If you need to add some, maybe they’ll give you some time.

spg guy

1.How much are the fees or taxes.
2.How long is the stopover.

moshe

Thanks DAN for the site. You do a wonderful job. I’ve got 2 questions for you.
1- I currently have a spg card for 10 months, but never received a offer for an additional 15,000 miles if I spend 15,000.I called them and asked them if i can have the offer, and they said no, since I signed up voluntarily for the card. IS THERE ANY WAY FOR ME TO GET THE POINTS FROM THEM?
2- Is the mint coin offer still around WITH FREE SHIPPING? Will it say 4.95 and then come off like you wrote? At what point do I see that it came off?
Thanks in advance

ahbetoobee

hi dan, i’m on my third *woods amex. this time though,i didn’t receive the bonus points. when i called them up they told me that it’s only for first timers. is this their new policy or is it ymmv (btw, they did offer me 3000 points anyway,which posted a couple of months back and i called back again now and was told i’d receive 5000 more). just wondering what other people are doing about this

yoko

Just canceled my SPG card. How long should I wait to apply again?

israeli

@israeli:
Sure, call them up.
It is an internet special only so they wont book it for me online. Any other ideas?
Thanks

Aviva

how can you call flying blue from Israel!?!??!

ivk5

Couple of corrections. It is possible to search for award availability even with 0 miles in your Flying Blue account. The promos are not limited to KLM via AMS. I have found availability on AF via CDG, for example. (I’m looking at destinations other than TLV though so YMMV.)

Cheers
ivk5

moe

does anyone see availibility to ny from israel and how much are the taxes?

sima

How do you go about purchasing these tickets I call starwoods and flying blue and both don’t know anything about this deal

Bz

a few things I’ve noticed:

fees are very high – can someone else confirm? $400 in fees is halfway to a ticket I can buy, with better availability – maybe better save the pointss…?

also, the starwood is no longer churnable – ne1 have any comments? I’m about to do another one so its kinda important…

coolfaye

i’m trying to book via phone and they are not aware of the promo. is there a code???

Dov

Can anyone check if there are any promo awards available for going from NYC to TLV on or around the Feb 22nd, and returning on or around Mar16th?

I dont have a flyingblue account yet, but I can move *points into there if there is available.

Thanks

loyal reader

I was lucky enough to get pleasant/helpful people helping me after several tries. this whole thing is a scam. there are no available dates either way to israel from ny. I also tried a much less traveled route from jfk ..and all is well until it comes to the pay screen..and then they say there are technical difficulties. I caled the 800 number you gave and they say they cant make the reservations because the deal is an online deal only. (even though they are showing availablility!)

loyal reader

after all was said and done..flying blue site was impossible to get a reservation with. I called the number u suggested. they asked for a copy of the screen stating technical difficulties (even though they knew they were having the problem with the site)with a letter explaining where we wanted to go and contact info. they actually called back and booked the reservation. thanks dan:-)

dovid

hey ‘dan the man’, would you know if this deal would be available mid march from israel

Malta

Does that include anywhere in Europe, even Malta? Flying in and out of the Maltese Islands is usually expensive nowadays.
