Considered doing this a couple times, it seems alike a really fun adventure. But one really needs abundant time to be able to pull it off. Its 4-5 hours from NY on top of the lengthy travel.

Why is it so much longer than driving?

You have to calculate the cost of the rental car when you fly.

They won’t let you on the Auto Train without a car.

We once spent a month in south west Florida visiting my parents so we needed a van. Rental cost was outrageous. So, Some of us drive down but it had been a long time since we did that for fun in college.

My then 10 year old son and I took the auto train back and it was a great father son trip that he still talks about. We got a roomette and were very comfortable. We brought food but when we checked in the guy asked if we wanted kosher meals, and gave them to us to take on the train and give to kitchen. We had to sit with others but we had a good time.

Only mistake was we got in late and the drive back up to NJ was too long. We should have stayed the night in Baltimore.

If my Parents were still there I’d take advantage of this deal!

Did this trip in 1985 with 4 kids & 2 adults
Drove from ny to Baltimore for Shabbos
Sunday morning off to Lorton va
On the way down, my kids could spread out because there were plenty seats available on the way home though they had to stay in their seat I don’t remember bedrooms being available
In those days, we had a family station wagon and we took this trip It was very expensive to rent a van for the four weeks we were gone.
