I know this says KN95 and not N95 which means the Chinese standard but aren’t all masks of this level supposed to have headband straps and not ear straps for a more secure fit? Maybe @jj’s shver can provide clarity.
That is part of the issue with these KN95 masks and why so many healthcare workers failed for testing with these masks – they do not provide an adequate seal or filtration. Dan’s point below is that they are better than 3-ply surgical masks, which may be the case. Hard to know for sure. The important thing is to continue to use caution with interactions and practice excellent COVID hygiene at all times.

These masks may be fine but keep a close eye out – a vast majority of KN95 masks are not certified and have actually been shown to NOT meet any standards.

The article specifically talks about KN95 masks. They likely do not meet medical grade standards. The concern is that these masks may give people a false sense of security (ie, thinking that these masks provide a higher level of protection similar to N95). As for whether they are better than a regular 3-ply surgical mask – that may be possible, however unfortunately many people either do not wear the KN95 correctly or have an even close to proper seal.
Either way, I’m not telling people not to buy or use these. Just to be aware of what they are buying and the possible limitations of these masks.

N95s should be left for those in medicine. These should be a decent option for regular people. The 3 ply surgical masks are much flimsier and less fitted than the KN95s that I’ve seen.
Fair enough! Agreed that many of the surgical masks for sale now are quite flimsy. Hopefully these masks work well for people.

I bought a bunch of those SUPPLYAID RRS-KN95-5PK on Snow Joe. They had like 20k-50k orders and took 3 weeks to receive. Bought from them because I trust Snow Joe and those masks were sold on Home Depot too.
The masks are not N95 but are way better than surgical masks. Seal is not bad, all depend on how you adjust the nose piece. But they are as good as you get if you cant get N95. Alternatively, get a reusable respirator and get the filters for them. That’s still available here and there and the filters are N95 for N100 or the equivalent of P95 or P100. But I really didnt want to wear a half face mask around the park or anything. But these KN95 dont freak people out as much.

The general public doesn’t need filtration masks against the virus, they need exhaust masks to knock the virus down when it comes out of their breath.
KN95 refers to the permeation of the mask. The melt-blown non-woven fabric is what creates the layer in the respirator masks that allows for the filtration. No KN95 masks are FDA or CDC approved. There is an EUA that references a few companies which mainly have their CDC/NIOSH N95 certifications.
The major difference between the N95 and KN95 designation is related to the necessary fit test which most if not all of the KN95 masks will fail. Yes its is better than nothing but in the grand scheme of things…
N95 = KN95 that has real fabric and passes fit test

Kn95 is NOT a Chinese standard, it’s a European standard. The filtration difference is so small that both are 99.9% effective. The seal is a different issue completely. You need to get a fit test to see if the seal is made properly. Even N95 masks made by different companies have different fits, which is why each mask type needs to be fit on each med professional before use in the field.

Most of the KN95s coming to the uses is using substandard filtration since KN95 is a standard and any Chinese factory can say they are abiding by the standard with no proof.
Please do not not post ear loop based “kn/n95”. They do not filter. They’re fake and the CDC recommends against them. Buying these feeds a counterfeit market.

Yes – Medical professionals should be sourcing from their trusted supply channels.
These are unlikely to be better than a 3-ply mask – especially since theyre questionably manufactured. Who knows what youre inhaling when the Chinese cut corners – its possible they are not using the right materials. If it was my face I would recommend the known mask vs these “kn95”. A cloth mask works well too and can be washed – they cost similarly and throw it in the washing machine + dryer nightly and youll be good.
Some tests are showing that some of these fakes filter at 25-50%.. the 3ply (level II) surgical masks will filter 70%+ – but all masks have openings where air comes in the side and so if the mask does not have a seal then you are not breathing in filtered air but likely regular air.
Again though – the purpose of a mask if that if you are an asymptomatic carrier then when you breath OUT the mask pushes the viral particles down to the ground. YES these masks will do that- but why pay these prices for this function??
