Chase Freedom Signup Bonus Doubled For A Limited Time

Update:  This offer will end on June 30!

The Chase Freedom Visa now comes with a 20,000 point signup bonus. That bonus is marketed as $200 cash back as points can be used for cash back, though you would be wiser not to.  This is double the previous signup bonus and is available for a limited time only.

Additionally it also offers another 2,500 bonus points (marketed as $25 cash back) for adding a free additional user.

DDF members are already reporting success getting matched from the 10K offer to the 20K offer by sending a secure message.  Typically if you applied within the past 90 days Chase will match your bonus to the current bonus offer.

Chase Freedom is one of the best no annual fee cards.  It’s an easier card to get that most other Chase cards as it doesn’t require a Signature level $5,000 credit line. The real beauty of the card is in the quarterly 5% categories. Again, while they call it 5% cash back you’ll really get 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent which can be worth much more than 5% cash. For $1,500 in spending per quarter you will earn at least 30,000 Ultimate Rewards points (7,500 points per quarter at 5 points per dollar spent).

The 5 point categories for the rest of 2014 are as follows:
Q2: Restaurants and Lowe’s.
Q3: Gas stations and Kohl’s.
Q4:,, and Department stores.

So go out to eat from now until June 30th and you’ll earn a whopping 5 per dollar spent.  Buy a gift card from your favorite eatery to lock in savings.

Or buy gift cards from Lowe’s.  See this post for gift cards that they sell for all kinds of other stores where you’ll be able to earn 5 or 5.5 points per dollar.

I coined the term “Chase Trifecta” several years ago and it still applies today.  It refers to having a Chase checking account, a Chase Freedom card, and your choice of either a Chase Sapphire Preferred card, Chase Ink Plus Card, or Chase Ink Bold card.

The Freedom card earns a 10% annual point dividend every February on all points earned during the previous calendar year if you have a Chase checking account.  That means you’ll earn an effective 5.5 points per dollar on purchases from the 5 point categories and you’ll earn an effective 1.1 points per dollar everywhere else.

Freedom alone can’t transfer points into much more lucrative airline/hotel/train currencies, but if you or your spouse has a Sapphire Preferred, Ink Plus, or Ink Bold then you can transfer points from Freedom to one of those cards and from there to your favorite travel currency.  You can read at the end of this post which currencies they can transfer to and why those points are much more valuable than just taking cash back.

If you use those points for a trip worth where they are worth 2 cents each and then you’ll have effectively earned 10-11% back on those “5 point categories.”  My coach tickets to Kansas City this week were worth 3 cents each, which means I really get 16.5% back from purchases in “5 point categories” thanks to the Chase trifecta.

Other Chase consumer cards you can simultaneously include the Chase British Airways (50K signup points, 1.25 Avios per dollar, and an annual companion award ticket if you spend $30K+ in a  year), and the Chase United Explorer (30K signup points plus another 5K points for adding a free additional user, and it gives free luggage, free primary car rental insurance including in the US, expanded saver and standard award ticket availability, priority boarding, and more), the Chase Sapphire Preferred (40K signup points plus another 5K points for adding a free additional user, no fee the first year, plus 2.14 points per dollar on travel and dining with no Foreign Exchange fees), and the Chase Southwest (50K signup points).

The Chase Ink Plus and Chase Ink Bold business cards both offer 50,000 signup points.  They offer 5 points per dollar on telecom, cable, and office supply stores, 2 points per dollar for gas and lodging, no foreign exchange fees, free lounge visits, and a waived annual fee for the first year. The Chase Ink Cash offers 20,000 signup points.

Hi Dan,

I just applied for the Chase Ink Plus on May 6 and got approved. My previous Chase card before this was IHG last November.

Can I safely apply for the Chase Freedom? Or does the May 6 application affect this and not allow me to be approved?

Thank you in advance for your help!

If I downgrade my sapphire preferred to a freedom, will I get this bonus?

I have the free sapphire card, would that work to transfer points?

If I currently have a freedom card and have my wife as an au on the card. Can she apply for the card at this point and add me as an au?

I signed up yesterday for 10,000 points, how can i get them to match this offer, where do i message them?

You can still get the Freedom card.

No, only new applications get a signup bonus.

No. You can upgrade or apply for Sapphire Preferred and then be able to transfer.

Login to your account and click on secure message center at the top.

Hey Dan, do you know how long this double sign up is gonna last ? TIA

I don’t know yet.
Last year it lasted for just over a month if I recall correctly.

Thanks dan, Though as i just orderd it last night, i do not have a online account yet..

can i call them?

You can wait until you get your account setup and then SM, shouldn’t take too long.
Much easier via SM than over the phone.

if im just starting out with the MS game and want to try out chase, do you think the chase saphire is a good card to start with? 45000 or would you rather suggest one of inks -cash card
bec again thats only 3000 thresh? thanks for all your great work

Can I sign up for ink plus than freedom? How much will that effect my credit score?

Is the AU offer also just for new customers?

Question- if I pay a cc bill before it is due- do I still get the points for the purchases? TIA

They’re all great cards, figure out what benefits you want and go for it!

Of course.

The only info they ask for adding an AU is the guys name, am I doing it right?

Dans Fan

Hi Dan

Im trying to downgrade from amex gold business to a free amex card and they say i need to apply for a new amex blue business.
Does that make sense?
Will the points transfer?

@Dans Fan: prob make sense bec you are downgrading from charge card to credit card.

thanks dan. can you just clarify this for me, am i getting this right or am i off base—if i get ink cash and i buy $1000 worth of gc in staples i get $50 back with 5% but if i get pints card i get 50 points back with 5% isnt the cash of $50 worth more then 50 points? and how long does it take for the 5% bonus to post?—-

Hi Dan, searched all around the DDF and cant find an answer: all the Chase Ink talk has been about Staples Visa prepaid 200 cards and evolve, I was in a store today with plenty $200 mastercards available. Is there any reason the mastercards wouldn’t be as good of an option as the Visas?

@Dans Fan:

$1,000 of gift cards at Staples on Ink earn 5,000 points, not 50 points! The points post when the statement closes.

$1,000 of gift cards at Lowe’s earns 5,500 points on Freedom if you have checking.

Mastercards are harder to load onto Bluebird, but they work fine with Evolve and Amazon Payments.

You can also find Visa cards at Office Max.

Dan, if you’re card is being further evaluated when you sign up online, will you still be eligible for the bonus if it’s eventually approved? If you get the”we need to check a few more things” message, is that always a as sign? (I signed up for chase BA card in February, trying bold and ink now)

Want to sign up my stay at home wife for this card, what Source of Income should be selected?

You can choose other, write spouse, and include all household income on the application.

sorry forgive my ignorance, its 5000 points and if i have the cash card and get 5% back thats $50 back for the $1000?

Correct, but the 5,000 points are more valuable as miles. It’s more than enough miles for a free short-haul ticket.

huh, really? 5000 pnts on chase is worth that much? what can you with 40,000? can they be transferred to delta?

so its worth it to get the points card not cash back i guess. btw i had 45,000 points on delta and wasnt sure how to use them, tried going to your posts and couldnt find ideas for domestic so i just went to and booked round trip business jfk-las for $679 plus the 45000miles.

Delta miles are the worst, why would you want them??

dan, i got 3 chase cards last year (ink bold, explorer, and sapphire pref, applied with 3BM). next month all the annual fees are kicking in, so i’m planning to cancel them. thinking to do another 3BM for ink plus, SW biz, and freedom (to get the great sign up points). heard some ppl saying now it’s tougher especially for biz cards. what would you think my chance is?

i had 15000 and is signed up for card and an additional 30000 also got card bec i was flying delta and it gave me and 3 people in my trip free first bag and priority boarding. spending threshold is only 1000 and you get the $50 credit. it made sense at the time. as to why i would want it in future not sure, i guess delta is a descent airline flying domestic although i prefer jet blue.

what airline has great mileage programs for domestic and that can be transferred from chase cards? on posts its mostly filled with ideas and accounts for international.

could not find on ddf

Hey Dan, I already have freedom, but wanted to get the ink today for the bonus- someone told me a 3bm does not work with chase- its still 2 or 3 pulls and they do not approve more than 1 card per person a day. Is that true? if not which cards should I apply for while applying for ink? thanks

Good airlines but terrible mileage programs.

United, BA, Southwest, Singapore, and Korean miles are all good for domestic flights.

@could not find on ddf:
Not true. You can ask for it not to be pulled again. And if you do get extra pulls you can always dispute them.

could not find on ddf

how do I ask for it not to be pulled again and then if pulled, who do I dispute it with?
ok, so which cards should I open with ink?

Hi –
I called asking to sign my wife up as an AU and get the additional points – I was asked which chase website I had seen that deal on. If I couldn’t provide the site, they wouldn’t give me the bonus. (I told them about DD, but they said that was not acceptable.) What do I do now?

Can the Ink Bold/Freedom points be transferred to SPG and Jetblue, and at what ratio?

Singapore, and Korean -can use with partners for domestic? and im also assuming can be transfered from chase. united not good flies from newark (thats annoying) and southwest has mostly stop overs.

@could not find on ddf:
Credit bureau.
Whichever look good.

Only for new applicants.

They can’t.

Singapore can book you on United.
Korean can book you on Delta, Alaska, or Hawaiian.
BA can book you on AA.
United has LGA and JFK flights as well.

i see. can you transfer from chase to those. or book on there website korean and that will get delta domestic. maybe but evry time i check and united pops up its never jfk or lga, always Newark. why is flying out of newark cheper then lga and jfk, more popular destinations??

Hi Dan,
I just applied for several INK’S, and they would only approve 1 after calling. Would you be able to explain to me why they always tell me that based on how many cards i opened in the last 2 years, they can’t approve me? you open way more cards and it seems like they don’t say boo and bingo! approved! And, if i call again they will prob see that I tried already and tell me no, as happened in the past. They won’t even let me transfer credit. I have a great history with Chase, but still they don’t try to accommodate me. What’s the secret!? 🙂

Hi Dan.
noob question – if I don’t travel – is there anything else to do with miles?
or my only option is cash back?

How do I send a secure message to chase? I cant seem to find that link..

Thanks Dan!just got an extra 10,000 points on a card I opened a couple months ago!

William Charles

No HT, dan?

@Dan I had this card years ago and shut it down will i get the 20k if i sign up again ty

You can get it again.

Yaakov Fineberg

Amazon payments = x5 CHASE FREEDOM points?

Dan's Passion

if applied 1 week ago for Ink biz, should i apply now for freedom or rather wait 30 days? (if it will still be avail)

I just got approved for a chase ink plus – which i applied for before june 1 and when i spoke to someone at chase on the phone, they didn’t have any record of the promotion for 60,000 points for meeting the spending threshold. Any thoughts?

I got the card, but my account says I have 0 points. Did I do something wrong? (Sorry, I’m a credit card noob…)

i wanna apply for 3 cards which one should i apply?

i was thinking of:

and the third one???

please help thanks!

Not so related, but if I got a targeted amex offer in the mail for 75,000 amex gold and signed up without entering the code on the mailing is there anything I can do now?? Amex is saying no.

@booky: British!

@Yoni: u hav to first meet the spending threshold

Will i receive the bonus if i switched my ba chase card to a freedom?

Does chase Slate & Freedom offer a business card?

You need to wait for the 1st or second statement after completing the spend threshold.

What do you have already?

If you apply for a new card, yes.

No, the business cards are called Ink.

I’ve had a freedom card for 6 months. I asked a rep about applying for sapphire, she said I’m not eligible because I just opened the freedom with same rewards program. Make sense?

Hi Dan thanks for all you have taught me,
I have a chase sapphire which has free foreign transactions fees< is there a card i can down grade it to that will give me free FTF?

1)can chase sapphire be down graded to chase united mileageplus explorer and get the annual fee waived the first year 2)if i get aproved to the mileageplus can i merge the points and then down grade the sapphire to freedom?(i need a card with no FT fees)

looks like a great time for changes 🙂
Question: i have 3 cards
1- Slate Mastercard since 2001 (my first)
2- Slate Visa Since 2004
3- Amazon Visa Since 2004

A: I want to Upgrade the slate cards to Freedom, does its effects the credit history? or should i just keep the 2001?

B: thinking also to change he amazon to sapphire, but its not a must now, maybe later, your opinion?, Thanks

@Dan in order o get those 2500 does me or the additional. Have o append something?

Big O

Any opinion on keeping the old Chase United MileagePlus Card vs the United Explorer?

I am planning on getting the Freedom, Sapphire and was thinking of adding the United Explorer as well, but wondering if worth keeping both of the United related cards over time(or which one might be better to cancel later on). Thanks

I have a chase freedom and chase checking account.
I called the credit card to inquire about the 10% cash back bonus and they didn’t know anything about it. who do I contact to make sure I get it.

i only have a capital one for a few years

i only have a capital one for a few years

I got Pending approval for Chase Sapphire,
is there a number to call in?

Chase approved a new Freedom card, but denied the Sapphire Preferred. I used two browsers simultaneously. The reason was too many open cards with them. I have a Chase United and BP. Recommendations for reconsideration?

How long after you spend the threshold for the bonus do the points show up? Do you have to wait the full 3 months or after you pay off that amount?
