Open Enrollment just opened – on Thursday, November 1st 2018 – and it’s time to reevaluate your healthcare spending.

The cost of healthcare in America is at an all-time high, leaving the traditional healthcare system more and more unappealing. The first and only Jewish health-sharing organization, United Refuah HealthShare, is steadily gaining traction – with members in 22 states!

Three years ago, United Refuah HealthShare started a journey that has transformed the way healthcare is approached in our community. With a singular, steadfast mission, they set out to accomplish what other faith-based communities have been practicing successfully for decades – and created the very first Jewish healthcare sharing organization.

As a non-profit organization and member of the American Institute of Health-Sharing, United Refuah HealthShare keeps administrative costs low and after the first two months of membership, 86% of each member’s funds goes directly to share medical expenses. Their members commit to living healthy lifestyles which generally results in fewer medical incidences, lower costs per medical incident, and much more rapid recoveries. The advisory services offered through United Refuah HealthShare assist members in navigating the healthcare system, to enable members to utilize the best combination of quality and price. And finally, members do not share the expenses for procedures that run contrary to members’ values or are unnecessary.

But the rapidly growing organization is not, however, just about savings. It’s about a community of people united toward greater health. United Refuah is based on the moral and Torah principles that it is an inherent obligation for members to maintain their health and wellness and to promote the best life possible for themselves and their families.
As such, they are the first health-sharing organization to launch with integrated healthcare management via BowTie Medical, an industry leader in this arena. Every member goes through a health profile assessment and gets a health coach to help them reach their goals. Additionally, members benefit from unlimited, 24/7 access to telemedicine, care coordination and advice to help navigate the healthcare system.

United Refuah HealthShare is not an insurance company and does not offer insurance.

Is this legit?

Is there any data on large serious claims ranging in the millions? Preemie or cancers etc… ch’v? Is it covered?

chaim

there is a limit of 1 million dollars per occurrence

Ez

Although this is an advertised post, I’d find it very gainful to read unbiased pros and cons of this form of health coverage (I understand it’s not health insurance?). Any personal experiences from subscribers?

LEVI

How much it cost per month? We pay about 1800 for our family (5 children and parents) in NJ per month

chani

we are on it, 6 kids, 2 parents. we pay about $600/month. i think a bit less.

Jack

A family up to 6 members is $519, with a $1500 co-share (deductible).
From all the research that I personally have done this is the cheapest option, with great coverage. You get to choose your own doctors, if they are not in network you may have to lay out the money and United Refuah will pay you back directly. They are super easy to get through to, they have doctors and nurses on call and they can help you out, saving money for us and them as a healthshare, and saving time, how often do we avoid going to doctors because we don’t have the time…?

Joey

When you conpare apples with apples, theres bo doubt this the best option for someone who isnt covered by their employer.

Joey

I use them. I had my reservations at first, but then after speaking to the rabbi who heads their ethics I was reassured.

I am on a family plan. It costs be $519 a month. I have to pay the first $1,500 in medical expenses for my family, after which, the health share kicks in 80% of the cost. After $8,000 in expenses they pay everything. Really great organization.

Its cost and return are much better then traditional insurance companies. I am very happy to be a member.

Al

Do they have any negotiated rates with providers because if not the cost can add up real quick

Jack

Yes, they work like an insurance company, they bring down the bills, sometimes even lower then what insurance pays them, as they are considered “self-pay” so doctors and hospitals like that better.

Gail

Do they pay for medicine as well?

Itchakadoozie

Can someone please answer this question? How does it work in pharmacies?

Itchakadoozie

Please answer this question. How does it work by pharmacies and cost of medicine in general? Thanks.

Yitz

I understand this group consists of primarily healthier individuals. What are the coverages for catastrophic illnesses?

Joey

they will cover up to 1 million dollars in medical expenses for a issue. If you start off needing very heavy contributions then it would kill the whole sharing program. If you develop something onece you a member, i beleive you would be completely covered

Shimon

Didn’t they start July 1st?

Liz

They had an article in the AMI magazine this week. I had a question that was not in the article.. It says that they don’t accept people with pre-existing serious medical conditions because that’s how they are able to survive and keep their rates low. What if someone is on the plan and develops a serious, costly medical condition? Do you still cover them, or are they knocked off the plan?

Dave G

If you develop something, it isn’t pre-existing…

Joey

I beleive they still cover you. But you should call them and ask tou questions. They are very informitive.

CB

I notice that they are not using the term insurance which is quite regulated. This sounds like a well meaning risk sharing setup.
I wonder what protection there is if they were to run out of money after you entered a hospital as self-pay (as they require).

Yitz

Doesn’t seem like there’s real protection against that.. gotta hope and pray they don’t run out of money

Ez

I need more than hope and prayers when it comes to my medical coverage and financial assurance

Emes

Good luck to anyone who uses this “insurance” and R”L comes down with any serious medical illness. When a single day of chemotherapy can be $25,000 or more, I sure hope this company is insured and bonded.

Joey

Up to 1 million dollars in coverage. You could always get traditional coverage anytime you feel your bills would be more then a million. Thats the very problem with traditional coverage, its only worthwhile for the sickest patients.

Yitz

You cannot just ‘switch’ to traditional insurance. You can only switch to traditional insurance during open enrollment, being kicked off or for any reason no longer qualify for health share program is not considered a qualifying event for traditional insurance to take you on.

Joey

Christian Health shares have been around for decades. They have never ran out of money.

Emes

I hope @Joey isn’t responding on behalf on this company. Scratching my head… if he is it sounds like there is no backup plan in place. Saying Christians have been doing it for decades and haven’t run out of money is not a response I would want to hear when asking a serious question as to what happens when they run out of money.

Joey

Pre existing conditions are covered after the first year.

Joey

Medications are not covered

Ry

If you have preexisting condition it’s covered if you’ve had it for a year?

EI

Does URHS cover a percentage of medicare? like 150% of what medicare would cover?

yelped

It’s on their site. Read the FAQs.

EI

I do not see this particular thing on their site, please advise where.

Gedalya

I’m an employer – can I switch to this plan for my family and my employees?

Ez

It might only be available for Jews, and secondly it’s not medical insurance

United Refuah HealthShare

To briefly answer some of your questions:

1) Eligible claims are shared up to $1 million per incident. Any excess amounts (r’l) would not be shared.

2) The only prescriptions that they share in are inpatient prescriptions. They do however have a great member benefit called HealthPerx that includes unlimited MD Live telemedicine, prescription discounts, dental and vision service discounts.

3) They have an open network which means any doctor and any facility. However with that freedom comes a limitation similar to other healthshares which is 150% of medicare for doctors, 160% for hospital inpatient, and 170% for hospital outpatient. If a member wants to use a provider that bills more, they can but will be responsible for the difference.

4) One of the five legal requirements of a healthshare is that they cannot discontinue a member for a condition that they develop after they are already a member. They can however restrict members from joining for such conditions which is one of the reasons why their prices are so much lower.

5) Employers cannot join as a group. However, many employers may opt to offer their employees an after tax bonus to cover a healthshare membership.
