The remote Russian city of Chelyabinsk, known as the “Gate to Siberia“, with a population of over a million is one of the most polluted cities in the world, but it also boasts a beautiful 120 year old shul built by cantonists who served in the area.

The shul serves as a Jewish outreach center with daily minyonim, a number of daily shiurei Torah, a kindergarten and after school program, ladies’/ teens’ / students’ weekly clubs. The shul also provides hundreds of kosher meals and distributes monthly food packages. The winter temperature reaches forty degrees below Celsius, but this doesn’t stop people from benefitting from the chessed programs as well as Jewish activities.

Unfortunately assimilation locally is catastrophically high and the economic situation is not like in most communities, people here just can’t afford to support the local shul.

The only women’s mikva in the region is also in the finishing stages of renovations.

Please donate generously to our campaign, every dollar goes a long way here in melting the spiritual ice as well as warming the hearts of the needy!

Genuinely curious – what does “assimilation” mean in this context? That they no longer are observant? Not Jewish so just curious!

I’m surprised Siberia isn’t as popular as a yeshiva week winter break destination like Miami Beach or Arizona is.
