COVID-19 has claimed another victim! This victim is the renowned journalist Reb Eliyohu Kaufman, who has tragically left behind a broken hearted widow and a young orphaned son.

This woman, this almana, is a convert, a giyores. She has no one to take care of her and her young son! The boy is only 7 years old! They need help to be able to survive. They need you.

The responsibility falls on us, on Klal Yisroel, to band together and to raise the funds to allow her and her son to have their basic needs met, at least for the first year. They need clothing, food, utilities, they need to be able to survive. DONATE NOW!

They need to be able to survive past the heartache, past the tragedy, past the broken home that has become theirs now that their husband and father is gone. No longer to light up the home with his smile, with his laugh, the leader of the house is gone.

There is a positive commandment in the Torah to love a convert, and it is repeated 28 times. Often the Torah says things once; to say it 28 times should show you how precious of a thing it is to help a widow and an orphan.

By supporting this case you can fulfill many positive commandments all at once! Please give generously that this widow and child will have their needs met, and in that zchus may we all merit to be spared any more needless sorrow or pain.

a very sad story. he was my neighbor and had mamish no family at all. it came as a shock to the whole neighborhood.

A giyores (or a spouse) is barred from acquiring life insurance? To me, it doesn’t matter if one is born Jewish, became Jewish, or not even Jewish- if there was never an attempt to fulfill the responsibilities of insuring one’s family, the 28 times doesn’t mean much for me. Devarim 22:8 discusses about both the positive and negative commandment around ma’akeh. Many opinions discuss this is also fulfilled by properly insuring one’s family (Life, Auto, Medical, Dental, Homeowner’s/Renters Insurances).

Shame on you Dave

Horrible!!!!!!!!!!! Makkeh is not life insurance, just because you sell life insurance dosent mean that his family now needs to starve,

Please delete this insensitive scribble.
The author should stand in the corner in SHAME.

Dave

I should stand in shame? How about the other hundred or so campaigns which are a photocopy of this one. It’ll never end!

moe

true. Hashem promised that there will always be poor people…
but to not help them because of that seems more like Sodom than Israel.
Maybe dave can join J in the next comment in joining a different faith…

dave obviously is intimately familiar with the situation. he knows that:
a) they didn’t have insurance
b) they had money for insurance
c) they never tried to get insurance
d) they were aware of his drasha that because one must make a fence on his roof, its oh, so clear that this obviously means that one must get insurance. i mean, like, who wouldn’t make that conclusion.

Therefore, it is crystal clear that one is forbidden from helping this family…

if anyone has any issue with this, they can talk to dave.

Dave

Here’s what we all know based on the fundraiser.
a) “They need clothing, food, utilities, they need to be able to survive”. I believe they don’t have any insurance, as they need the basics to survive.
b) I hear this one a lot, “I can’t afford insurance”, or “it’s so expensive”. Many policies are less than $1/day, with many other policies at $0.50/day.
c) Please see above. I mentioned (and I mention every time) “if there was never an attempt to fulfill the responsibilities of insuring one’s family”. Of course people are denied for many reasons, but if you don’t try you’ll never know. Campaigns can make it clear that due to XYZ, an individual continued to be rejected for life or medical insurance coverage.
d) It’s pretty widespread among many main-steam kollels, yeshivas, and communities stressing the importance of maintaining insurance, having properly working smoke and carbon dioxide detectors, etc.
No need to talk to me, as each has the liberty to spread their maasar to whichever tzedakas they choose. There will be hundreds more of “loved one suddenly niftar, not one penny for food…”; with others that agree with me and others who call me a Rasha. I don’t work in the insurance industry. Hold the sarcasm, as it’s not a joking matter.

ok, dave, i usually don’t get into these sort of discussions online but because i know the family personally, i feel responsible to respond.

In Israel, everyone has health insurance. The thing is, they don’t cover everything and also sometimes its important to go private (which can be extremely expensive) in order to receive good treatment for a certain procedure.
Also, in Israel, every employer is obligated to pay for a pension, which includes life insurance, for their employees. The problem is that it takes time to build up and even then can amount to just a fraction of their income.
Even i don’t know his financial situation beforehand. What i do know is that many people lost their jobs or were unable to fully work because of corona. Many campaigns i have been involved in personally were not so much for the future of the family, although that was important as well, but because of the massive debts, medical or other, that the spouse/parent left behind.
A widow and an orphan need financial stability. Whether its for food, for therapy, or clothes, or for a well needed vacation, its important to help them out. The campaign is trying to raise 60,000 dollars. This is not a large sum, but for the family it means a lot. 1,800 people giving 36 dollars will enable a family to go on with life. Please don’t try to attack and instead give with an open hand.

very sad, but could we put other people in need on here besides those of just 1 specific faith?
