It’s important for anyone considering this option that health sharing is *NOT* insurance. Effectively it is a cooperative that uses the funds collected to pay health claims, but (unlike insurance) payments are made entirely at the discretion of the organization. While costs can be much lower than traditional health insurance, many people who thought they were saving money found that big medical bills were not paid and only discovered the limitations after the fact.

This is not a judgement about this particular organization. This is based on multiple published articles about similar programs, which have been more popular with Christian groups. Research for yourself and ask the right questions before making a decision to switch away from traditional health insurance.

TY Alan for this informative comment.

United Refuah Member

Hi Alan, thanks for your comment. Can you explain what you mean that the claims are paid at the discretion of the organization? There are a very clear set of Sharing Guidelines that us members receive that clearly list what is eligible for sharing and what is not eligible for sharing. It is not a discretionary decision that the management makes whether they want to pay a claim or not. In my research I found that United Refuah NEVER had one single claim ever go to a court, Beis Din, or Rav for arbitration in their two and a half years of operation. A clarification of your statement would be appreciated. Thank you!

New Jersey accountant

In some states as this doesn’t qualify as insurance there will be a tax penalty for not having insurance (for example New Jersey).

United Refuah Member

Thank you New Jersey accountant, but the information that you provided is incorrect. Any qualified Healthsharing ministry, United Refuah included, is listed as an exemption in all states that still carry the penalty including New Jersey. See exemption code C-2 for NJ on this page: https://nj.gov/treasury/njhealthinsurancemandate/exemptions.shtml.

Ben

United Refuah is not a qualified Health sharing ministry in operation since 1999, so indeed, you will still be liable for the penalty in NJ. You can buy a MEC though.

David Wickler

Ben, the information that you provided is incorrect. I am a member of United Refuah and have confirmed in writing that United Refuah HealthShare is a continuation of Maysville Fellowship Medical Aid Plan and is recognized by the CMS and the IRS as a ministry that has been in existence with continuous sharing since prior to December 31, 1999. In the future, please verify information before you post against an organization.
