How can we be sure it’s DE? OU no longer differentiates in their labeling between D and DE

Dan

Still able to purchase, though you can no longer subscribe.

Rikki

There is no such thing as OU-DE.

Rikki

What you sent is from 2019. It also shows that the OU does not have an OU DE designation.

Dan

You can contact the OU to confirm that these are still DE.

Eli

OU does actually have an OU-DE symbol currently. I have not seen one for over 15+ years and then I spotted one on some Arnold’s bread last year. I was shocked, for 2 reasons, 1) I haven’t seen it in so long I thought that they don’t do it anymore. 2) I was under the impression that kosher organizations won’t put their certification on (regular) dairy bread.

You can see it in the pic on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Arnold-Whole-Grains-Grain-Sliced/dp/B0005Z65RW/

The whole DE symbol not being used to designate is a huge pet peeve of mine. It leaves people second guessing for themselves, and reading ingredients and saying “there’s no dairy in this, it must be DE”. While making the decision yourself might be wrong not everyone will take the time to confirm with the OU. Also what about each flavor variation? Maybe only the main flavor is DE but others are actually dairy. What about if they change the recipe? How frequently does one have to confirm with the OU to be sure it’s still DE. If the OU would just label DE when it’s DE then it would avoid all these issues.

After seeing the OU-DE on the loaf of bread in got excited thinking maybe the OU has realized their wrong and started to use DE again, however, I have a feeling it’s some special exception for bread sand everything else they’ll continue to use just OU-D.

First time I saw (recently) was on this – contradicts the bread theory… not sure why they got it:

The box has no hechsher, all the other flavors did?

Dan

It does.

reb yid

The picture on Amazon isn’t a real photo of the box, it’s a generic image which doesn’t have any other info on it like hechsher, nutritional info, size (except for the text box they slapped on it), etc. You can find a pic of the box with a hechsher elsewhere online.

Cinnamon crunch 1.99 alive again

flexible freedom is not freedom

It seems that DE has reappeared from the OU. I have seen countless products that now have DE symbols, and this cereal was OU-D for the longest time, and now has a DE symbol on it. so for everyone say DE doesn’t exist, it clearly does, and it seems they are using it again on many products.

Sw

I saw ou-de on a Trader Joe’s ice cream and assumed it was fake, based on the fact that OU does not do DE.
I contacted OU ( who was very helpful and quick to respond). They said they started allowing DE with strict guidelines, but most companies decide for packaging reasons to leave it at plain D.
