Verizon Double The Data Promotion.

Update 2, 02/12: For a limited time the 4GB of data for the price of 2GB promotion is back!
Plus Amazon has the Galaxy Nexus for just $99.99 for new customers or new family lines!

>Update: 01/15: This promotion will end tonight.

If you have Verizon and are thinking of getting a smartphone or are thinking of switching to Verizon, today is the last day to signup for the double the data promotion.

Normally Verizon charges $30 for 2 GB of data, but until today they will give 4GB of data for the same $30.  The promotion is only on 4G LTE smartphones, not phones running on the older 3G data network (sorry Apple fanbois!)

A data plan is required to activate any smartphone on Verizon.

Since I got my awesome new Galaxy Nexus phone a month ago I’ve used about 3GB of data, so although I’m on an old grandfathered unlimited plan, if you are thinking of getting a smartphone with 4G LTE you definitely will want those extra 2 GB.

While tethering on my laptop via the Galaxy Nexus I typically get speeds of about 15 Mbps down (but have hit speeds as high as 90 Mbps down) and 8 Mbps up, significantly higher than my home internet connection, another reason those extra GBs will come in handy.

Amazon Wireless sells the Galaxy Nexus (running Google’s polished new Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 OS that will unlock at the sight of your face and will instantly sync the tabs, bookmarks, and settings from Chrome on your computer to Chrome on your phone) for just $229.99 for new or upgrading customers, $70 less than directly from Verizon, and Amazon also has even heavier discounts on other VZW 4G LTE smartphones like the Droid Razr and HTC Rezound.

    Dan are you able to tether for free or do you pay for it? I’m just wondering how if it will pay to do that and drop my slow Verizon home service.

    @Jim:
    I bought a tethering app for $9.99 that uses regular data for tethering and works perfectly. My phone becomes a wifi router and is fast and secure, simply awesome while traveling!

    If you are an advanced Android user and root your phone you can get a tethering app for free, but you may void your phones warranty by doing so.

    I also have a grandfathered unlimited plan and I am afraid to upgrade to a 4g plan because I heard Verizon might force me switch to a limited plan. How did you switch to your galaxy nexus(awesome looking phone btw) and stay with your unlimited data plan?

    As long as you have the unlimited plan on your account you will not lose it even if you change phones.

    @Dan:

    Dan, Are you sure about staying unlimited/grandfathered even when you switch to an LTE 4G device?
    I’ve had a discussion with a Verizon CSR a while ago and according to him, you remain grandfathered only when sticking to 3G handsets. Once you upgrade to an LTE device you MUST change your plan to activate your phone.
    Does it say on your online account and statement that u still have the unlimited data plan?

    @Aay B.:
    I had a 3G Palm Centro and switched to the 4G Galaxy Nexus, and the unlimited plan remained without any problems.
    Others I know have done that as well.

    I switched in June, the VZW unlimited was killed in July.
    And I thank Sprint everyday for kicking me off just in the nick of time as I love my Galaxy Nexus!

    Hi,

    Im currently on a grandfathered in Free & Clear Unlimited plan from sprint I have 6 lines and use about 3800 Landline minutes a month. My total bill is $340.

    sprint will not allow us to upgrade our phones for the new BB or Iphone and idea which plan or provider to move to for similar benefits.

    I had enough of sprint.

    I have the 4 gig of data plan and it is amazing!

    I was constantly checking web-sites my first month (a little too much :) ) and only used 1 gig….unless you download alot of movies, you will not even get close! If you need a data plan — go for it!

    I got the PDANet tethering app bundled with a program called DataPilot 7 through a FRY’s Free after rebate promotion. After you install the program it opens up the browser with the link to the app. You have to enter your DataPilot serial number, though :( It works great!
