Update: Today is the final day to book reduced mileage awards, good for travel through 11/30. American awards can be cancelled and redeposited for free any time before departure.

Originally posted on 7/12:

For many years, American has offered reduced mileage awards, offering savings of up to 7.5K miles off travel to/from rotating destinations to AA credit card holders.

Alas, my Citi AA business and consumer card statements for July confirm that these awards will be discontinued effective 10/1. It suggests that web specials offer great savings, but those are offered to all AAdvantage members and while they can be cancelled, they can’t be changed.

Back in the aughts, there were bargains like round-trip flights to London for 32.5K miles or Shanghai for 42.5K miles in coach or round-trip flights to Hawaii for 67.5K miles in business class.

I reported in 2009 that the program had been gutted and no longer offered discounts to international destinations, though it did still offer discounted awards to Canada.

In 2013 they changed from offering quarterly lists to monthly lists, which has continued until now.

The 10/1 end date means that the current monthly list will be the final one. Cardholders can save up to 7.5K miles by calling AA at 800-882-8880 to book award travel to/from cities like Aspen, Baltimore, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Flagstaff, Fort Lauderdale, Fresno, Hilton Head, Houston, Kansas City, Key West, Long Beach, Minneapolis, Montreal, Orlando, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Seattle, Tampa, Vancouver, West Palm Beach, and more.

Have you take advantage of reduced mileage awards over the years?

Do they give back for everyone flying in same itinerary

Ben

Wonderful. Shortly after I found out about them they’re gone.

Do you know if this applies to Barclays cards as well?

AA

‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Cynthia

I’d like to know about the Barclays cards as well. I got rid of my Citi AA card long ago.

I’ve used the reduced mileage awards several times. You had to call an 800 number to book the discount. Very often the agents had no idea about the program and had to speak to their supervisors. It took between 20 and 30 minutes to book.
In one remote city I informed the shliach about this program. He had no idea even though he traveled once a month to NY, was an AA Gold member, and a follower of this site !
