United is launching a creative “Your Shot To Fly” sweepstakes.

If you upload your vaccine card on United.com here or on the United mobile app under My Account>Add record to my profile you will be enrolled for this offer.

You need to be a US resident 18 or older to enter.

The vaccine data will be saved so that you will be able to travel to countries requiring proof of vaccine without needing your physical card. You can remove the vaccine card after the end of the sweepstakes.

What I hate about most sweepstakes, such as the grand prize in American’s 40th anniversary sweepstakes, is that the winner gets hit with a massive tax bill.

But United is going above and beyond to alleviate that burden.

5 grand prize winners will each win 26 round-trip business class flight certificates. Each certificate is valid to fly with a designated companion to anywhere in the world on United! Plus, they will also each win $275,000 in cash. Flights are valid from 7/15/21-7/14/22. The ARV of this prize is $784,000, though you should be able to dispute that ARV if you don’t use all of your flights or if the actual value of the flights you fly plus the cash is less than that.

30 first prize winners will win 1 round-trip business class flight certificate valid to fly with a designated companion to anywhere in the world on United! Plus, they will also each win $7,700 in cash. Flights are valid from 7/15/21-7/14/22. The ARV of this prize is $27,300, though you should be able to dispute that ARV if the actual value of the flight you fly plus the cash is less than that.

Flight certificates are non-transferrable.

First prize winners will be picked daily from June 1-30 and the grand prize winners will be picked on July 1st from the non-winning entries.

Registration closes on 6/22, but by entering early you’ll have more chances to win. Then again, if you enter early you’ll have marginally higher odds of winning a first prize, which would exclude you from winning the grand prize.

  • If you are not vaccinated because you are unable to be vaccinated due to religious requirements or health reasons or if you have been vaccinated, but you have privacy concerns about United storing your vaccine card, you may enter by mail.
  • To enter by mail, send a slip of paper with your valid email address, name, address, city, state, ZIP code, phone number, and MileagePlus number to MileagePlus Vax Sweepstakes, PO Box 158, Freeburg, IL 62243-0158.
  • Mail-in entries must be hand-written and original.
  • Limit one mail-in entry per outer mailing envelope.
  • Mail-in entries must be post-marked by the end of the Sweepstakes Period and received by the deadlines set forth below.
  • Limit one entry per person and per MileagePlus account, regardless of method of entry.
  • Any attempt by an entrant to obtain more than the stated number of Entries by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations, or any other methods may void that entrant’s Entries if discovered by Sponsor and that entrant may be disqualified, and any potential prize may be forfeited.
  • A winner who entered via the mail-in entry may be required to execute an affidavit certifying that the winner did not receive the COVID-19 vaccination because they are unable to be vaccinated due to religious requirements or health reasons or that the winner has been vaccinated as of entry, but has privacy concerns about United storing participant’s vaccine card.

Hawaii? Tel Aviv? Bora Bora? London? Paris? Venice? Cape Town? You won’t have to choose if you win, you can see them all! You can view United’s route map here. What’s on your bucket list?

So the prize is 26 business class flight certificates, but it must only be used by the winner and 1 companion? The winner can’t include his/her entire family to eat away at the 26 certificates?

Jack

If your a student and get vaccinated in Israel, Can you send in your Israeli vaccine certificate?

Eli

So i don’t need to be vaccinated to enter?

LA Yid

Vaccination card means the written paper card?

Meny

Is a Israeli vaccination. Certificate good to?

Tavster

Same question

R

Option doesn’t show up on my account

Yehudah

Just needed to download the new app that came out yesterday. I’m in! Thanks Dan!

Am I oblivious

I don’t see in the app where to add record.

yelped

Thank you! Entered!

MG

Does a GreenPass work? I got the GreenPass with a Antibody test over #250 in isreal which here falls under the same category as getting the vaccine.

Boaz

Can people enter if they are a US citizen but were vaccinated in Israel?

chaim

just curious are these unrestricted seats meaning if there are only 2 seats left in business class can you get both of them.
Also the odds of a regular person using all 52 certificates or anything close to that are probably very slim how many people actually are able to fly that often

dfbg

I uploaded my Meuhedet green pass (it’s in Hebrew and English), and under”facility”, wrote “Meuhedet Health Clinic”, it accepted that.

Tavster

I uploaded my Israeli vaccination certificate.
Doesn’t mean that when they draw my name they will accept it (especially when I’m supposed to be living in the US ;-))

Btw
Did united release the list of new routs, since last September?

chaim

i would add in to the post that these are round trip tickets not just one way

Sam

So can one just not take any flights, dispute the ARV of all the flights and then keep the 275k (minus taxes on the 275)?

Tavster

So I would have 12 months to use 26 certificates?? Man what a year that would be

yy

Since you wouldn’t have time to work, they should also includes year’s salary.

tavster

🙂

hershle

HMM. WHERE DID THEY GET THE NUMBER “26” FROM?? Dan were you involved in this? Is there a chasisishe member on the planning board?

yy

More likely a Sefardi. With an Ashkenazi it would 18 or a multiple thereof.

Texas Totty

We would’ve been best off with a Lubavitcher. They shoot straight for 770.

AS

Interesting in the official rules

“ A winner who entered via the mail-in entry may be required to execute an affidavit certifying that the winner did not receive the COVID-19 vaccination because they are unable to be vaccinated due to religious requirements or health reasons or that the winner has been vaccinated as of entry, but has privacy concerns about United storing participant’s vaccine card”

I guess they are making you swear an affidavit

linglingfool

Or they may not.

Lakewood guy

Do I need a mileage plus account?

Od

how exactly is the cash offsetting the tax burden don’t you pay tax on the total ARV? meaning you pay tax on the cash prize as well?

lindnuck

It doesn’t purport to offset. It HELPS offset.

That said, the valuation they pegged for the prize comes out to $15,000 PER SEGEMENT per person. i’m not sure you could find flights that expensive for EVERY segment even if you tried.

A more reasonable valuation would be closer to $5,000 per segment, bringing the value of the prize down to $250,000. Now you are more in the ballpark. I’m no accountant, but I believe after taxes on the 275k you’ll have something like $165,000. Taxes on the value of the flights (if they are 250k) are probably like $100,000.

So even assuming you have the time and inclination to fly 26 segments, and those are all super expensive flights (LA-NY, for example, would be way less than $5,000), you’re looking at taking all the flights and still pocketing at least $50-60k.

The only problem i see is that if you wanted to take all those flights, you’re not working much that year. $50-60k is not much to live on, even if you rent your house to someone because you’re in hotels/airbnbs all year around the world. Unless you do things like long weekends in europe and south america lol

how could you max out your 26 round trip business if you win can you do multi city etc?

Never Biden

What qualifies as a religious objection? any letter from a anti vax rabbi? Pls no hateful responses.

Following

The tough part about the 26 trips would be (if it was enforced) the round trip requirement. You couldn’t just travel from one location to another like around the world in 365 days. You would have to go somewhere and return home on an average of every two weeks. This would give you about a week of travel and a week at home to regroup. Now its starting to sound like a job.

PH

Probably you could nest your round trips. E.g.,

* Cert#1 Fly from A to B
* Cert#2 Fly from B to C
* Cert#2 Return from C to B
* Cert#1 Return from B to A

Effectively a circle trip: A-DestinationB-DestinationC-(LayoverB)-A.
