American’s newest 787-9 Dreamliner features the airline’s new Business Class Flagship Suites with doors. The airline has received 2 of them and will start flying them next month.
Doors in business class are somewhat of a gimmick, as anyone walking by can see into the suite, but it does give a greater sense of privacy when you’re in your suite. Some people find them claustrophobic, but you can always leave them open if you don’t care for them.
The new 787-9s feature 51 flagship suites in a 1-2-1 configuration with doors, wireless charging, and a chaise lounge seating option. On international flights, it includes flagship service with priority check-in, premium amenity kits, duvet blanket, and a “refreshing dual-sided pillow with cool touch fabric on one side and traditional fabric on the other.”
The front row will be branded Flagship Suite Preferred seats, which will be roomier and a step up from the rest of the cabin. American hasn’t yet announced how these seats will be priced.
American’s current 787-9s only have 30 business class seats, so that’s a huge increase in business class capacity. Premium Economy will also grow from 21 to 30 seats. The new premium heavy planes will be referred to by American as 787-9P.
Premium economy seating will have a 2-3-2 configuration:
American is retrofitting its 777-300ER aircraft with these flagship suites, though unfortunately, that will mean the loss of international first class for the airline. Those planes will go from having 8 first class seats, 52 business class seats, and 28 premium economy seats to a whopping 70 business class flagship suites and 44 premium economy seats.
The airline’s 16 aircraft A321T subfleet will be retrofitted to match the rest of the A321 fleet, with first class and personal entertainment being removed. Those planes currently operate premium domestic transcontinental routes and will be replaced by the A321XLRs, which will receive these new flagship suites with doors.

The seats may be nice, but you’d still have to fly on AA to sit in them. Doesn’t seem worth it.
Totally. Great hard product, still the same AA service
Any update for TLV form American?
“American continuously evaluates its network and we have nothing new to share at this time regarding Tel Aviv service. Customers who are planning travel to Israel can purchase tickets on aa.com on flights operated by our partner airlines that serve Tel Aviv.”
I don’t know who the designer was, but looks very old fashioned.
Hawaiin to alaska has not been instant in many recent cases due to glitches in the system as the airlines merge
This should be noted
