Update: Don’t forget to redeem points by tomorrow as there will be program changes on 1/1/23!

You can still redeem points to pay your annual fee back at a value of 1.5 cents per point until midnight.

Back in May 2020, Chase added the ability to pay yourself back.

Pay Yourself Back was then made into a permanent feature of the Ultimate Rewards program, but the categories will change periodically.

Chase tells me that these are the Q4 categories valid from 10/1-12/31, which appear to be mostly unchanged, except for the addition of shipping for the Ink cards.

  • Sapphire Reserve
    • Points are worth 50% more when redeemed for statement credits after using your card at Airbnb, dining at restaurants (including takeout and eligible delivery services). Additionally, Reserve cardmembers are able to use Pay Yourself Back for their annual fee.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
    • Points are worth 25% more when redeemed for statement credits after using your card at Airbnb.
  • Chase Ink Business Preferred and Ink Plus
    • Cardmembers who utilize Pay Yourself Back can redeem points worth 25% more on business expenses related to internet, cable, phone services and shipping.
  • Chase Ink Business Cash and Ink Unlimited
    • Cardmembers who utilize Pay Yourself Back can redeem points worth 10% more on internet, cable, phone services and shipping.
  • Charitable Giving
    • Points are worth 25% more when redeemed for donations to select charities for all Freedom, Sapphire, and Ink cardmembers. Points are worth 50% more for Sapphire Reserve cardmembers.

A great feature of the program is that you keep the original points that the purchase earned, even though you paid yourself back for the purchase. That means your points will be worth more than 1.25 or 1.5 cents each!

In other words, if you spend $300 on Airbnb on Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you can use 24,000 points to offset that purchase and make it free. Plus, you’ll still earn the 630 points for travel, so you effectively used 23,370 points to offset the purchase. That means your points were actually worth 1.28 cents each!

If you spend $300 on dining or Airbnb on Sapphire Reserve, you can use 20,000 points to offset that purchase and make it free. Plus, you’ll still earn the 900 points for dining or travel, so you effectively used 19,100 points to offset the purchase. That means your points were actually worth 1.57 cents each!

Sapphire preffered still shows “thru 9/30” for AirBnb. Are they going to update that?

DF

For Reserve card best value combine this with 5x/10x rewards for flights/hotels purchased through the Chase travel portal. Use card to purchase through the portal and then redeem the amount you paid for flights/hotels with pay yourself back on dining/other purchases.

Zal

How do you redeem the amount you paid for flights and hotels, if it’s not a pay yourself back category?

DF

As I said, you redeem it from other categories like dining. When you get the credit back on your statement does it matter what you paid yourself back for? No. I buy a $1,000 flight and redeem $1,000 of dining purchases

sam

the pay yourself back program is basically useless for the preferred…

Robert

Absolutely!

Brian

Fake news. Just need to get creative.

Does the freedom have this also?

I am so upset about the prefferred redemption categories! I am sitting on 100k points waiting for something normal!

DG

Is Chase stopping the pay yourself back program?

Nespresso dude

My annual fee on my reserve is showing 1.25 not 1.5

Do we know what the Q1 category’s will be?

How does one go to the pay-yourself rewards, I can’t seem able to figure it out.
