Spend $20 At Small Businesses In Select Zip Codes With AMEX And Get $20 Back!
Update #2: Commenters confirm what I predicted, that any business located in the zip codes below would qualify. See the comments for lots of examples and to post your own experience.
Additionally I am happy to report that charities located in the zip codes below work as well. I made a donation to Chabad of North Fulton under the Cumming, GA Big Break and received an email confirmation 36 hours later from AMEX confirming that I would receive a $20 statement credit!
————————————————-
Update: Registration for all areas appears to be full.

Originally posted on 09/24:
You can register for the promotions below now, but you must spend the $20 in a single purchase between September 29 and October 7.
Speaking from personal experience from past promotions:
-This will work on consumer and business AMEX cards, but not on corporate cards, gift cards, or prepaid cards.
-This will also work with 3rd party AMEX cards like those from Citi, however if for whatever reason you do not get credit automatically getting it manually will be extremely difficult. With AMEX issued cards it’s easy to be credited manually via a secure message online.
-This will work with all of your primary and secondary cards from AMEX, but not with secondary cards from 3rd party issuers like Citi. Of course each card must be registered separately but you are able to use the same email address.
-You can register for all of the promotions below.
-Although there is a list of eligible small businesses for each promo, in the past all small businesses, even those not specifically listed, have worked perfectly.
-These promotions have worked online and in-store.
-Don’t forget that you can always have a store or restaurant split your bill into multiple $20 charges if you have multiple cards.
-Although it says that charities are excluded, in the past it has always worked at charities as well.
-Promotions like these (and the tons of other ones like Small Business Saturday in November and Twitter/Facebook/Gift Chain promos) are how to actually turn a profit on cards like the Starwood Consumer or Starwood Business card with their $65 annual fees after the first free year. There’s still time to order more free secondary user cards now to have for this and other promotions (I have dozens of cards just for stuff like this, though some people have reported being hit with a financial review after ordering too many additional user cards, so don’t do it if you don’t make your income on the books…)
Post a comment of which small business store or website in the zip codes below that you will be spending $20 at!

September 24th, 2012 at 11:01 am
Do secondary business and personal cards affect the credit of the person they are issued to? Is there an inquiry? Does it show up on a credit report? Also, for personal cards, does it affect a spouse’s credit differently?
5
September 24th, 2012 at 11:06 am
DO you have to spend $20 or more? If I spend only $18 wont get the credit?
6
September 24th, 2012 at 11:06 am

11
September 24th, 2012 at 11:24 am
I clicke dthe link that finds the small business that participate, and im sorry to report, but it says that no business in Brooklyn is participating!
12
September 24th, 2012 at 11:30 am
If you move the map over Boro Park it resets to that areas stores. There are quite a few stores in BP, like the popular toy store “Double Play.”
If anyone finds websites that work for the other 4 promos – please share…
Happy Shopping!

September 24th, 2012 at 11:33 am
Hi, is this once per account, or once per card?
Thanx
14
September 24th, 2012 at 11:35 am
@chana
you need to reread the post
15
September 24th, 2012 at 11:38 am
Chana,
If you click on Big Break Staten Island (Including parts of Brooklyn/Boro Park and Bayonne)you will get a new window pop up and in the box on the left of the picture, http://www332.amexnetwork.com?id=38280&selectedlanguage=American+English, click it and it gives you all the business in staten island, then if you click in the top right, change location ,you can switch it to Brooklyn, and it will come up with a lot of small businesses that are eligible.
16
September 24th, 2012 at 11:50 am
does it work calling in my cc number or does it have to be used in person?
17
September 24th, 2012 at 11:55 am
@Dovid:
It’s all in the post.
@AG:
If you supply a SSN it will show on the secondary credit report and can help them or hurt them depending on how you use the card. There is no pull.
You can also tell them you don’t have the SSN handy though and still get AU cards.
@David:
$20 or more.
@Chana:
It’s the name of the promo.
@moshe:
Look at where the business is based. (Contact us, etc)
@Chana:
As I wrote, it doesn’t need to be listed to work!!!
@hunch:
I’m afraid you need to reread the post as well…
@Tzvi:
As I wrote, all small businesses in those zips should work.
@joel:
That would work as well.
18
September 24th, 2012 at 12:21 pm
Maybe this is obvious to everyone else, but is this a one time thing, or can I spend $20 at 20 different stores and get $400 back? I’m assuming it’s just once right?
19
September 24th, 2012 at 12:25 pm
@Shalom:
Once per card.

Is it worthwhile to sync Amex with facebook account?
24
September 24th, 2012 at 1:30 pm
Can I do Staten Island and Raleigh as well?
25
September 24th, 2012 at 1:33 pm
Hey Dan and anyone else who has “relevant experience”, Whats your opinion on this. I churn amex and other cards multiple times thru out the year. If I add my wife on to all my amex accounts as a authorized user, do you think the next time she applies it will affect her getting approved. I know as a authorized user it does show up on the credit report. I don’t want to mess up an application for a $20 credit, but then again I want to max out if I can.
Thanks Man
26
September 24th, 2012 at 1:35 pm
You wrote “You can register for all of the promotions below”. Does that mean you can qualify for a $20 rebate at EACH of the 5 states above?
27
September 24th, 2012 at 1:35 pm

28
September 24th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
I just had the weirdest thing happen.
I did my spg business card. Then I did my gold business card (using same email) and I got this response.
“Oops, our records show that you’ve already registered for this offer. We limit the number of times that a Cardmember can register for each offer.”
Then I checked my email and I got the confirmation email with last five digits of the credit card saying I am good to go.
Whats up with that? Anything to worry about?
29
September 24th, 2012 at 2:14 pm
Thanks, I stand corrected, I found a few stores in brooklyn. The food store next to SHoprite on Mcdonald’s ( its called tomato farm something- its on the next corner, next to avenue I and mcdonlds)is participating, so anyone can go there and get free food:) or $120 dollars worth of food in my case!!
Dan- I have same question as josh and Eli, can i do this in every single state? or only once in NY and thats it?
30
September 24th, 2012 at 2:20 pm
@bonkers:
Did you get 2 confirmation emails? If not try them both again.
@Chana:
I’m not sure how many times I need to say this, but you can do each and every one with every card that you have.
And it does not need to be listed as an eligible store to work.
31
September 24th, 2012 at 2:26 pm
awesome thanks so much! lets see what all the other states have to offer! Gmar Chasima tova y’all

42
September 24th, 2012 at 4:58 pm
Dan how are u 100% certain that all small businesses work for this promo? The wording on their website sounded otherwise! I don’t recall if the sat small business promo had the same wording or not. I’m just wondering how u can be so certain?
43
September 24th, 2012 at 5:38 pm
@DAN I just called totally toys in bp and they did not know about it. They were on the list. Do you know if this works online or only if you go into the store?
44
September 24th, 2012 at 5:39 pm

45
September 24th, 2012 at 6:10 pm
Can someone please post a few websites that are located in those zipcodes that would be eligible?
I would also like to know how we can be sure that this would apply to orders made online as well.
46
September 24th, 2012 at 8:38 pm
It’s weird, I got the same message as Bonkers
“Oops, our records show that you’ve already registered for this offer. We limit the number of times that a Cardmember can register for each offer.”
But, when I checked my email, it said it got registered. Weird!
47
September 24th, 2012 at 9:04 pm

48
September 24th, 2012 at 9:22 pm

49
September 24th, 2012 at 9:28 pm
seems to be dead. This was the response I got:
Sorry
Unfortunately the maximum number of Cardmembers have already registered for this offer. Please visit http://www.AmexNetwork.com for other fabulous offers.

53
September 24th, 2012 at 11:17 pm
not sure but last year not for profit had a problem with small business saturday- they are not a charity so this might give a problem as well
54
September 24th, 2012 at 11:37 pm
I got a message for some of the cards saying my card was successfully registered in addition to an emailing confirming but then some of them I only got a confirmation message but no email. Does that mean the ones that I didn’t get an email for, didn’t go through?
Also let’s say I have five Amex cards- do I register each card for one city, or I can register all five cards for each eligible city?
55
September 24th, 2012 at 11:41 pm
Can people post websites that can be used to spend the 20 dollar credit?
56
September 25th, 2012 at 12:06 am

57
September 25th, 2012 at 1:13 am
Does anyone know if ’3 guys from bklyn’ is acceptable for this promo? Their zip code is 11219 but it doesn’t seem to be on the list. They were part of small business saturday last year. I bought gc’s from them.
58
September 25th, 2012 at 2:15 am
Dan says any store in the correct zip code that takes amex will work. But for all those who want specific stores:
Wallachs on 13th ave;appliance bargain center (now called plug ins); photo factory on 15th ave;Weiss trimming 15 ave; Freunds fish 15 ave;bagel store 43rd and 14 ave;double play toys 14 ave;
59
September 25th, 2012 at 5:53 am
@Dan:
Isn’t it once per card per region? I was able to sign up with the same card in differen’t regions.
60
September 25th, 2012 at 7:31 am
GREAT TIP:
If you have many Amex cards, use LastPass, FREE downloadable softward for automatically filling in your information in forms and create identities for yourself with your credit card information. This will speed up the registration process immensely! For instance, I create an identity for DealsSeeker1 for my Penfed CC info, DealsSeeker2 for my Citi Amex CC info. and so on, until you have used up all your credit cards. Then just register with your differen’t identities for Amex by clicking on FillForms and choose the identity!
Hope this tip helps many of you with many cards!
Dan, with your hundreds of cards I can’t imagine you doing it any other way! Unless you found an easier way???
61
September 25th, 2012 at 9:42 am
anyone from Chicago find anything for the il one?
62
September 25th, 2012 at 9:43 am
Any way we could contact Amex and ask them to open more slots for Staten Island and Bkln? It seems a little inequitable if they allotted the same number of opportunities for the NYC promo as for the other promos? On that note, does anyone know how long the promo was out, before it was filled up?
63
September 25th, 2012 at 10:35 am
It would be nice if we can come up with a list of small businesses we can support in each of these cities that will ship and sell things we can all use and does’t mind splitting up the payments between many CC’s.
64
September 25th, 2012 at 12:00 pm
@Jeff: go for it jeff
65
September 25th, 2012 at 12:13 pm

73
September 27th, 2012 at 11:48 am
Hi Dan, I am the main user on my spg acct and have 2 cards as add ons. I only registered my main card. Amex cust service told me that those two cards are registered automatically as well and can each spend 20.00 also. That would mean I can divide a purchase between 3 cards… I hope she was correct!
74
September 27th, 2012 at 11:51 am
@Miriam:
Incorrect. You need to register each card separately.
75
September 27th, 2012 at 12:11 pm
Oh well ! I did not and now the registration is full. Teh cust service rep insisted so !
76

If you registered in Anaheim and have nothing to use it for, try donating $20 to http://www.occcopico.org/donate.html
It will at least score you a tax write off!
Anyone want to try?…

I found a store in Raleigh that will take multiple cards and split transactions over the phone. I am buying my wife a clutch and a tote bag.

I registered six different cards- two in Anaheim, two in Georgia, one in Raleigh and one Carol Stream. I realized I should have registered all in one area. Does anyone know if it must be spent in the area registered or could be used in any of the five areas?

Just spoke with the owner of Azure Chocolates out of Raleigh. He was very accommodating and I requested he charge $20 to each card and send me one giant gift card – no problems. Obviously the payment hasn’t posted to my AmEx statements yet, but with the end date 2 days away, I figure I will just email customer service at AmEx and they always credit the amount anyway. Plus, I feel good knowing that I can help a small business out. and bury my face in CHOCOLATE.

Just a heads up in case anyone did not yet spend the $20 for the NYC promo the following stores are guaranteed to work. (It worked for me.) Closeout Connection on 13th ave, bencraft hatters on 13th ave, super 13th (grocery store) on 13th ave, and sub express on 13th ave.

Hi Chevra,
Can you please provide phone numbers for those of us abroad?
I can’t seem to find the thread of Flyertalk for this promo, can someone please provide the link? I need more places that I can call up and do it over the phone or online, because I am in Israel. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

I made a purchase at Metro Drugs in BP (11219) last week and never got the confirmation email or credit. The charge was for $70 so I split it between Citi amex premier thank you and a true amex card. The citi amex CSR supervisor gave me an immediate credit of $20 where the real amex card’s sup’v. said he will wait till next week and then maybe give me the credit. That was a shock that citi was less of a hassle in getting the credit. BTW, 3 guys from Bklyn in BP was an automatic confirmation and credit on my amex gold.

The Virgin Atlantic AMEX issued by BofA is a non core AMEX. I registered it for the promotion and this morning, I see that they have posted a credit of $20. So, it worked for both the core AMEX’s and the ones issued by other banks.

I see the credit is from the merchant where I did the purchase, does that mean AMEX deducted from them or thats just the way the run the promo
