-The current list is valid for stays through 7/31/17.
-Hotels can sell out of discounted rooms quickly and only a limited amount of rooms are available per night.

You can book up to 2 reservations per hotel. There’s no limit to how long each of the stays can be.

You can stay in any PointBreaks hotel for 5,000 IHG points.

IHG sells 5,000 points for $67.50 (or less via targeted offers after you sign in).

If those points don’t post instantly you can call IHG to get a points loan based on your purchase confirmation number in order to quickly grab a room. Alternatively you can transfer 5,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to IHG, though transfers are not instant. It’s a terrible use of Ultimate Rewards points (as they’re were more than twice that to brokers or when transferred to other airlines or hotels), but it allows you to start buying points for 0.7 cents each.

If you already have IHG points in your account then you can buy points on the cheap via making a cash and points booking.

Be sure to click on the rules during the checkout process to make sure that the room is fully refundable (almost all are):

-The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Meadowlands allows you to redeem 5K points and $64 for a night, just click “more options” and then select rewards nights. If you cancel that night you’ll get back 15K total points, so you’ll have effectively purchased 10K points for $64, or just $32 per 5K points.

-The Candlewood Suites Secaucus allows you to redeem 10K points and $79 for a night. If you cancel that night you’ll get back 25K total points, so you’ll have effectively purchased 15K points for $79, or just $26.33 per 5K points.

-The Crowne Plaza White Plains allows you to redeem 10K points and $100 for a night. If you cancel that night you’ll get back 30K total points, so you’ll have effectively purchased 20K points for $100, or just $25 per 5K points.

-The Crowne Plaza San Francisco Airport allows you to redeem 25K points and $92 for a night. If you cancel that night you’ll get back 20K total points, so you’ll have effectively purchased 20K points for $92, or just $23 per 5K points.

Where can you stay for 5K points?

You can click on the link that says “View all card offers by issuing bank” and scroll down to view all card offers from the bank of your choice. Here’s How To View Credit Card Offers On This Site.

The IHG card is not subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule and it comes with an annual certificate good for a free stay in any IHG hotel. Those are best utilized at Intercontinental hotels where a night can set you back 60K points or $800/night in places like Bora Bora. The card is free for the first year and then $49/year. If you have a credit card you’ll also get Platinum status and 10% of your points back on all award reservations!

Thanks Dan for the post, well written.

Hi Dan, are you able to cancel the booking without any penalties?

Anonymous

@Bob Kaufman:
Absolutely, depending on location, sometimes up to 6m the day of the reservation. When you book the terms are spelled out to you

Isreal

Do they have options in isreal ?

Gabbai

Nothing I know of in Isreal. In Israel there are quite a few options: IG David in Tel Aviv as well as a bunch of CPs in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, Dead Sea and Eilat. There is also an Indigo in Tel Aviv and a HI in Ashkelon. For point usage the HI Ashkelon is best value and I have never found it as bad as many of the reviews. Good place to stay with kids.

Is this a good time and buy IHG points (I think It is)? I just bought 100K points through the book/cancel process for $460 and used my Amex Platinum for 5x Amex points. Considering buying more for some upcoming travel. Opinions?

Harry

Do you get 5x AMEX MR points on this? The debit is to IHG Rewards Club. Is that coded as a travel purchase?

jm

Hmmmm – you may be right? I just checked and you’re correct on how it was billed. Probably not getting 5x points afterall 🙁

Still, $460 for 100K points is the lowest I’ve ever purchased points

mareh

Any idea if the IHG rewards club charge will trigger 5x per dollal on the IHG Chase card?
