The Starwood Consumer AMEX and the  Starwood Business AMEX are offering 35K Starpoints each if you signup up by 2:59pm tomorrow and meet the spend threshold. That’s 40% more points than normal and is the highest SPG signup bonus ever offered.

In 2018 the Starwood program will be combined with Marriott. Most, though not all, loyalty programs typically go with one bank to issue a co-brand credit card. Chase currently offers the Marriott card, so the odds are that either AMEX or Chase will win the deal for a combined Marriott-Starwood program.

Marriott values 1 Starwood point at 3 Marriott points and allows you to convert points back and forth, making 35K Starpoints convertible into 105,000 Marriott points. That’s a very generous valuation and creates lots of highly lucrative opportunities. But more importantly it shows that Marriott really does value Starwood loyalists and will do right by them in this merger.

The increased Starwood bonus typically only comes around once per year, so it’s definitely possibly that this may be the final increased offer ever for the Starwood AMEX.

One thing we’ve learned from the loss of Airtran, America West, Continental, Northwest, and USAirways is that the number of co-brand credit card options out there continue to decrease, so it’s important to take advantage of the signup offers while you can.

There are lots of possibilities for the future of the Starwood card. AMEX and Chase may continue to each offer their own co-brand Marriott card. One bank may wind up being able to service previous grandfathered accounts but not being able to take new signups. One bank may wind up taking over all of the cards and loans.

Currently the Starwood AMEX offers more points per dollar in every category than the Chase Marriott card due to the 1:3 conversion ratio from SPG to Marriott. It remains to be seen how that will be reconciled in a combined program.

It’s hard to say at this point what exactly will happen, but one thing is for sure. If you are on the fence, now is definitely the time to signup for both a consumer and a business Starwood card due to what is possibly the final limited time offer expiring tomorrow afternoon.

Why is everyone so sure the Chase visa will survive instead of the amex? This card has a better reputation and status. Just do a search to see what I mean. I would think the new company will want this to become the Amex Marriott card.

MosheP

So we can 2BM for both (personal and business)?

Danistheman

Just signed up, but it says I need to wait 14 days for a response….any advice what to do from here to increase my chances of getting accepted?

Roi

@Dan what’s 2BM means? And do we do it? (My guess is to signup for both the same time for 1 credit check)

Shimon

If both of these are credit cards, how many Amex credit cards I can have.
I have now EDP, ED Blue Cash Preferred, Business Blue Cash, and SPG Consumer card.
Should I close SPG Consumer and open Business one instead?

Eric

Should i still call? got this email:
We are excited that you’ve decided to apply for the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card, and we’re reviewing your application now. We promise to let you know when we’re finished, or if we need more information.

Shimon

Thank you for applying for the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card. We value your membership and appreciate your interest in another American Express Card. Unfortunately, we cannot approve your application at this time. According to our records, you currently have the maximum number and type of American Express Card accounts that we allow.

I have 4 Amex Credit cards. Please advise 🙁

Avery

I already got the bonus on my personal SPG card. My wife was an additional card holder. Is she still eligible for the sign up bonus if she now signs up for the card?

Anonymous

@Avery: She IS still eligible.

Z

Thanks, Dan. Just applied and was approved for both. I did have both in the past; it’s been a few years since I received the bonus.

Dan, will applying for the One Vip card from Amex and funding it through the Starwood Consumer AMEX and the Starwood Business AMEX allow me to meet the spending threshold to unlock the bonus on both these cards?
