need to have home phone and home phone service to use this? I have unlimited calling to US and canada on my cell phone. I don’t need this right?

Abs

in for one, awesome

Dan

@jim:
No, that’s the beauty of this, you don’t need home service for it to work, just internet access.

It functions as a free landline.

ben

I don’t have internet service from a provider I just use my internet thru an optimum hot spot… will this be able to work with just wifi? or does it need high speed internet service to work?

CT

My internet is dsl, through the phone, will this work?

Dan

@ben:
You need a router.

@CT:
Yes.

joetraveler

Can you port your old land line #, or do they assign you a new one?

ben

@Dan: I guess that means I need real internet service not wifi hotspot?

CT

Is there anything else that I would need to buy? I currently have a modem/router in one…
Thanks, really appreciate your help!!

Dan

@ben:

@CT:
Just a phone like the one in the post.

CT

In that link you provides, it says that I may need to purchase a t-mobile sim card?

BA

How does it compare with Ooma?
Dan, do you have it for your home landline? quality of voice? what other devices do I need? Thank you happy chanuka

BA

allows only one per account?

Walter W. Stumpf Jr.

Bought one to replace by Basic Talk.

Dan

@BA:
Quality is very good.
Don’t need anything but internet service and a regular landline corded or cordless phone.

@BA:
Yup.

BA

In for one, thanks dan!

CT

Bought one!!

I got this back when it was a deal on Newegg (alerted through DD). It has been GREAT!!! (I have been a Google Voice user for many years). Now the landline is for the kids, and the GV goes to a different set of portable phones just for me.

CT

Will I be able to keep my own landline phone number? Will i need to port it to t-mobile or something like that?

Dan

@Nighthawk700:
Nice!

@CT:
You need to port it to a wireless carrier (any inexpensive prepaid carrier will work) first and then to Google Voice.

CT

K, thanks Dan!! You are really helping us save money!!

Have a great Chanukah!!

I just got an email from Obihai about the Amazon deal. Amazon is saying it’s 100% claimed now. Obihai is saying they’ll be available on Newegg at the $29.99 price w/ free shipping from the 18th to 21st.

Dan

@Nighthawk700:
Just join the waitlist and you’ll be able to order from Amazon as soon as you clear.
You can even setup waitlist notifications via the Amazon app on your phone.

Serve

sorry its OT. if husband has bb, wife serve,
1. would a bill paid already on bb and now paid by serve (utility) be an issue? (same elec company and acct number paid by 2 diff ppl)
2. can husband pay for a bill under wife name etc? or as long there is a utility company and acct number, does not matter under whose name acct is.
3. can serve pay for same cc paid in the past by bb?
TIA

Yehudah

I believe Newegg is having this on sale for the same price tomorrow.

YY

Cant post current number without going via new cell acct? can create new number and choose area code?

and any idea if staples easy rebate gift card works for on line order?

NJMACMAN

@Dan:
I have 2 in the same house. You just need different Google Voice accounts.

Ally

Is anyone here using Basic Talk? What do I say to it? How will it be using abroad-Israel?

Nighthawk700

For those who might have missed it on Amazon, it’s now available at Newegg, with the code EMCWHWB45. (Source, Obihai FB page)

Chana

Can this be used overseas?
And how would it work if it needs to be ported over a cell phone company?
Or can I use it straight from the Internet with a google voice number?

Thanks

David R

@Chana: It works over the internet from anywhere with a Google Voice number. You only need to port if you have an existing phone number you want to keep.

Chana

Thanks David.
Also, can I get a google voice number for free if I don’t have a us phone number?
I would want to get one I’m overseas though

sasha

Dan,

I currently hv uverse internet and uverse basic phone with att with 200mims. Can I use this with what I have so I can have unlimited mins within the US or call overseas cheaply? Do I even need the basic phone from att? Appreciate your educating an old dog.

Thanks!

Daniel

Im paying anyway for the landline to get internet with Verizon, so whats the benefit? Can I get internet without a landline? Im paying anyway so might as well pay for phone line

Walter W. Stumpf Jr.

I bought one from Amazon, and just opened it this morning.

My question is, since I had not noticed this before, is it says it does NOT support 911 [which my current Basic Talk does]. Has anyone found a solution for this problem?
