British Airways Avios can’t be beat for short-haul nonstop flights thanks to ultra-low award rates, no expedite/close-in fees, and practically free award cancellations.  Below are all of the direct flights from Philadelphia that can be booked with Avios.

Be sure to read the British Airways knowledgebase for everything you NEED to know about the BA program and how to best search for BA award availability with tips like always booking one-way awards.  If you have a question it’s probably already been answered there!

Notes:
1. Rates in the chart are for one-way flights.
2. Routes that display the airline in bold are subject to fuel surcharges.
3. There are no fuel surcharges for flights on: Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Alaska, LAN, and USAirways. There are also no fuel surcharges for American flights within the western hemisphere and for Qantas flights within Austrlia. Fuel surcharges for intra-Europe flights are also typically quite low. Fuel surcharges for travel on Cathay Pacific aren’t too bad while fuel surcharges to fly on British Airways borders on the criminal.
4. In the charts below I’ve only included direct flights as BA charges Avios for each flight segment. For example Maui isn’t on the chart as BA does not have any partners that fly nonstop from Philadelphia-Maui.  Though you can always fly to Maui via Los Angeles, S. Diego, or Seattle, for 12.5K for the PHL-west coast segment and 12.5K for the West coast-Maui segment with no fuel surcharges. Plus you can stopover in the connecting city for as long or short as you want.
5. BA.com does not display availability for all airlines! If you want to book travel on airlines like Alaska, Aer Lingus, and LAN you’ll need to pick up the phone and call BA! You can search Alaska award availability on AA.com before calling BA to book it.
6. In rare cases connecting flights can be cheaper than nonstop flights when using Avios and I’ve noted that in the chart.
7. Cities in the chart may only have seasonal nonstop service.
8. A dash means that class of service isn’t offered on that route.
9. If you are originating in NYC and don’t want to drive to PHL to pickup a flight you’ll probably be better off searching for and booking the NYC-PHL leg for 4.5K separately from the PHL-XYZ leg.
————————————————————————

Want to pickup Avios? You’re in luck as you can transfer points from all over the place to BA.

-The Chase British Airways Visa Signature offers 50,000 Avios for spending $2K.

-The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express awards 25K signup pointswith no fee for the first year. 20K Starpoints can transfer into 25K Avios with the permanent 25% transfer bonus.

-American Express Membership Rewards points can be earned from cards like the American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card and the and The Platinum Card® from American Express.
These points can transfer instantly 1:1 to Avios and typically several times per year there are bonuses that range from 20%-50% to transfer points to BA.

-Chase Ultimate Rewards points are earned from consumer cards like Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Non-Preferred, Chase Freedom and business cards like Chase Ink Plus, Chase Ink Bold, or Chase Ink Cash. These points also can transfer instantly 1:1 to Avios.

Great

Andy F.

Thanks Dan!

btw, are you planning to update those published posts to include US Airways flights?

Yehuda

So nyc to tlv can be 34.5k avios each way..? Sounds good

robert

thanks – can you do one for boston please?

Dan

@Andy F.:
Your wish is my command, it’s done!

@Yehuda:
Yup, though TLV is always the toughest route to find awards on.

@robert:
At some point, probably will finish the hubs first.

Dan fan

So how are the awards? Are they as easy as finding availability on American?

Jalem

I appreciate the post. A friendly request for any future Avios route postings: Boston! (I’d be happy to wait in line)

brian

Thanks Dan, great job as always!
Which of the new international flights with no fuel surcharges stick out as particularly good values? (eg. TLV)

Ryan

Are you sure toronto is 3x for business class? On BA for AA flights it’s only double for any flights to/from canada. I tried to check toronto but it was only showing economy.

Dan

@Dan fan:
Should be pretty comparable.

@brian:
Everything in Europe is fantastic!

@Ryan:
AA markets Canada/Caribbean as business so it’s only double miles.

USAirways markets those as first, so unfortunately it is triple miles.

Kermit

If the non-stop to TLV isn’t available, where are the best places in Europe to get connecting flights using avios? Thanks!

Jason

NYC>PHL with what public transportation?

Benyamin

Hey Dan,
Thanks again for all of your wisdom. We are actually having trouble syncing USAirways reward dates with that of Avios. They are showing availability on USAirways, but not when we attempt to search through BA…
Any advice?

dfd

just noticed that BA.com seems to be charging $20 instead of 2.50 for lga-yyz is that a glitch or have our fees just gone up? thanks

iahphx

Thanks for the list, Dan. It’s very helpful to have it in one place.

For Philly-based readers familiar with the US Airways Dividend Miles (DM) program, you can see how incredibly useful it now is to have Avios points. It kind of works well in conjunction with having DM miles. DM works great for long haul trips, particularly those in premium cabins. Avios works best for nonstop short to medium haul (including Europe!), but only in coach class, because both the premium cabin and connecting-flight redemptions tend to be expensive. Avios also has no award ticketing fees (DM has plenty), even on close-to-travel-date award travel, and seems to only take any cancellation fees out of the taxes (which means if you’ve paid only $2.50 for your domestic award redemption, that’s effectively your change/cancellation fee!).

But, sadly, all is not wonderful. It is not correct to say US award availability is similar to AA’s. AA’s award availability has deteriorated in recent years, but it’s still better than what US offers. US offers Delta like availability; you’re probably going to be disappointed if you want to travel on any popular day, even if you try to book many money in advance. The seats just won’t be there. So understand that this is a great new tool, but also one that is less than perfect.

iahphx

That’s book many “months” in advance.

And I forgot another great difference with Avios over DM: you can book one-way. In fact, you should consider booking all your Avios as one-way trips, as it makes it easier to make changes.

evan

What about destinations from toronto?

hannah

hi dan! thanx for all good deals you post.
Pls help, im looking to fly to la with avios points and i cant find on British airways website anything on may 20. would you know if any good deals will come up closer to this date? or any another way to book ?

@dan

Intresting from nyc to Toronto in biz they charge only double that’s 9k and from phl they charge triple that’s 13.5k
any reason

Thanks Dan!

Jim

Thanks, Dan. You’ve just helped me decide where to transfer my AMEX Membership Rewards points before closing our PRG cards (I really wished there was a BA transfer bonus now or coming soon!)

MarktMan

I appreciate all the work you put into these lists. Unfortunately I have NEVER been able to find round trip availability in the 3 years I’ve had these BA points. Plenty from LGA-ORD but nothing on the way back, same with LGA-ATL, NYC-MIA and now PHL-ORD.

CtownBin

@ Dan:
Great post! Loving the option of using Avios on USAirways flights now.
One important question now that it’s an option: Do you or anyone else know how to add your Dividend Miles number to a USAirways reservation after booking with Avios? This would allow for free checked baggage or other benefits for anyone with a Barclay’s USAirways credit card or elite status. There is a way for AA, now we need one for USAirways! Thanks.

Anonymous

Dan, does BA avios WEBSITE only show nonstop flights because when I looked on AA site it showed three different flights on 8/31/14 one way phil to san diego(one nonstop and two with stop overs); but when I inserted that date on Ba avios it only showed the one nonstop?

Dan

@Kermit:
Madrid would be an option.

@Benyamin:
Search on AA.com for nonstops.

@dfd:
Click through to the next page and it goes down.

@iahphx:
US award space is better than DL, IMHO.

@hannah:
Award space changes daily, keep checking.

@@dan:
See comment 10.

@Jim:
Definitely due for one.

@MarktMan:
No idea what you’re doing wrong, I’ve booked hundreds of such tickets.
Search the AA calendar for space and then book one-ways on nonstop flights via BA.com

@CtownBin:
Did you try changing it on USAir.com?
You can always call USAir until Finnair adds USAir as an option online.

@Anonymous:
Nonstop only.
You can just book them seperately and they’ll send your bags straight through.

milzz

can you pls do one for detroit?

Hi Dan – thanks for sharing all this great information! Will you be putting together this list for WAS (IAD, DCA, BWI) anytime soon? If you can instruct me how to pull together such a list I’d be glad to do it and share it with you (and your readers).

DL

Andy F.

Haha, thanks so much!

Eric

Any chance of a similar list for Charlotte?

Nathan

PHL to EDI is no longer a route

Diane Epstein

Any suggestions on using Avios around the beginning of June from Tel Aviv to Dublin – not through London with its horrific fees? I want to take advantage of the Dublin-Boston bargain.

Lag Bi'Omer

Lag Bi'Omer

@dan PHL-YQB seems to be seasonal on AA. Anyway no availability for Avios on any date in 2016!?
