Update: American Airlines has quietly extended the validity of Systemwide Upgrades that were set to expire on 1/31/22 to 7/31/22. They had previously extended upgrades that were set to expire on 6/30/21 to 7/31/22 and expiration of American miles was postponed until 4/1/22.
My wife hit lifetime Platinum status in 2020 thanks to American counting credit card spending towards million miler status and got 4 systemwide upgrades that were going to expire 1/31/22. Those have just been extended to 7/31/22:

I was gifted Executive Platinum back in 2019 status thanks to having Hyatt Globalist status and also received 4 systemwide upgrades. The status was extended from 1/31/21 to 1/31/22. The upgrades were previously set to expire 1/31/21, but were extended to 6/30/21. They now show the 7/31/22 expiration date:

Related: my daughter has one of the dreaded AA paper transportation vouchers (from voluntary denied boarding) that requires the person named on the voucher to go in person to AA ticket desk for ticketing. Her voucher expired last month, but I chatted with AA and they told me it’s extended through March 31, 2022. I don’t know if they are doing it across the board, but worth contacting AA if you have one that is expired.

When you get upgrade certificates for a status match by AA do they remove it you don’t meet the challenge requirements?
No. But can only be used once you retain status.
