Quick FAQ’s about this device:
-It costs $0 per month after you buy the machine.
-A phone number is free with Google Voice.
-It works with any regular landline phone. For example a VTech Dect 6.0 cordless phone with caller ID is $14.97, or a 2 handset system is $29.99.
-It makes regular outgoing and incoming calls with caller ID.
-Calls are free from anywhere in the world to US and Canada numbers.
-You can call international numbers for a little as as 1 cent per minute. Israel is 2 cents per minute for landlines and 10 cents for cell phones. All rates are listed here.
-You can only port a cell phone number to Google, so if you want another number you’ll have to first port it to a prepaid cell service and then port it to google. Porting in your old number costs $20.

Does a computer need to be on and logged in to google to use the phone?

Dan

@pcgeek:
But no 5x with Ink 😉

@Booky:
It has nothing to do with a computer.

@dan, will this work with a cisco phone?

cookie monster

can anyone explain this process? “if you want another number you’ll have to first port it to a prepaid cell service and then port it to google. Porting in your old number costs $20”

zg

can i port a number from ooma to OBiTALK?

yis

I don’t really understand the benefit since you need to pay for internet anyway, doesnt it pretty much come out to the same price as a bundled internet/phone service, since the regular internet plans are expensive without a bundle? Someone kindly please advise
Thanks

pcgeek

@cookie monster: It’s referring to if you want to “port” (transfer) your landline phone number to Google voice/obi. For example, if you currently use Verizon for your landline phone service and you want to keep that number, you would have to first port the number to a mobile carrier eg. Tmobile. Once that’s completed, you would port the number to Google voice for a fee of $20. The bottom line is that you can’t transfer directly from a landline to Google voice.

@yis: I don’t which carrier you’re referring to, but with Optimum it’s definitely cheaper to subscribe to internet only, especially after the promotional period is over. Reps will try to upsell to the bundled service, but if you do the math it ends up being more expensive

If I don’t have internet, will the service be clear with this WIFI Adapter:

“You don’t need any other phone service, just broadband (DSL/FIOS/Cable) internet service with a router. If you don’t have a router you can buy this WiFi adapter to allow the OBi to work over WiF”

I got this deal (through Dan’s Deals!) a few years ago. Just a heads up that OBI is now charging $10 a year to update the software on their devices after a year. This started a few days ago. If you look in the OBI forums, there is talk about it, and some workarounds, but the workarounds are a pain.
