For obvious reasons, saver award tickets to Israel have never been easier to obtain than right now. United miles are great for Israel but I’ve never seen anywhere near amount of United nonstop award space.
For people redeeming round-trip coach saver awards to Israel in advance you are probably better off accumulating points on the Barclaycard Arrival Plus rather than traditional miles as the 2.11% back will probably be easier to use and require fewer points.
Saver awards typically open up within a month of the flight. Here is a look at some of the nonstop options from North America to Tel Aviv.
I didn’t include El Al in this snapshot as their industry trailing website makes it too time intensive to search for lots of award space, but their nonstop coach award can be booked by American for 45K miles each way and their nonstop business award can be booked by American for 67.5K miles each way.
I also didn’t include Delta in this snapshot as their award calendar and the Air France award calendar have ridiculous amounts of false positives. You can book a Delta coach award one-way with 25K Air France Flying Blue/AMEX miles with no fuel surcharges or a round-trip for 85K Delta miles. You can book business class one-way with 62.5K Air France Flying Blue/AMEX miles or round-trip with 140K Delta miles.
Note that if you’re willing to fly with connections that there’s much more availability, but this post is just looking at nonstop flights. Of course if you’ve been to a DansDeals seminar hopefully you know of even more ways to find award space.
United: Newark-Tel Aviv nonstop saver award space
-A coach round-trip with ANA/AMEX miles is 60K or a one-way “workaround” ANA coach award is 38K. A business round-trip is 90K or a one-way “workaround” ANA business award is 63K. No fuel surcharges for United flights
-Bookable in coach one-way with 40K Air Canada/AMEX miles. Business would be 82.5K one-way. No fuel surcharges for United flights
-Bookable in coach one-way with 42,500 United/Chase miles. Business would be 70K one-way. No fuel surcharges for any flights

Just search for Atlanta to NYC/PHL/YYZ and then work the websites or call to stitch it together in one award redemption.
Or book it as 2 awards on different airlines if needed.
The question is the availability with return flights.

By the way – thanks to one of the forum members – I flew with United EWR to Shangai, and returned from TLV to EWR with ANA miles, and HKG-TLV with El Al booked in business with AA.

Dan, curious if you know, do the (non El Al) airlines actually have revenue desks which track the Jewish calendar and zmanim and keep TLV holiday prices higher? How do they always know to charge much more for the specific flights that are just before and after every yom tov, with such pinpoint precision that a flight which is too close to the zman is drastically cheaper, even 11 months out? Or perhaps they simply copy El Al?

It sounds crass but… if I have lots of international flights in the coming months, would it be a strategy to use TLV as my “hub” so to speak? Like would it make sense to go through TLV coming in and out of Australia?

Dan – I have been saving up my SPG points to travel business class elal for 3 ppl. through AA. AA does not seem to have access to all of Matmid’s availablity and it appears as though elal only releases 2 business seats per flight to AA in advance. Other than trying last minute, do you have any advice to work around it?
Also, is AMEX MR the only cc I can accrue Matmid points through?
