Update, 05/03:  Unlike the US program, the Canadian Membership Rewards program rarely runs specials.
However through 05/31 Canadians can transfer points into British Airways Avios at a 1K:1.5K ratio, a 50% bonus just like the US program!  That means you can fly from Toronto to Chicago or NYC, Montreal to NYC, or Vancouver to Seattle or Portland for just 3,000 points each way in coach or 6,000 points each way in business class (when available) with free bags!

I don’t usually post too many Canadian deals (let’s face it offering the Canadian Starwood with less than half the bonus points and nearly double the annual fee of the American Starwood just doesn’t seem fair even if it does offer a free night for spending $40K).

If you are north of the border though you can now get 25,000 Membership Rewards points for signing up for a Business Gold card and spending $3,000 in 3 months. The annual fee is waived for the first year. Plus any year that you reach $50K in spending you’ll get a bonus 15K points and if you can reach $100K in spending you’ll get a bonus 25K points.

Canadians can also get 15,000 points for spending $500 on the consumer Gold card in 3 months.  The annual fee is waived for the first year. The card earns 2 points per $1 on flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, gas, grocery and drugstore purchases and one point for every $1 in card purchases everywhere else.

The Canadian Membership Rewards program transfer partners can be seen here. Options include Aeroplan and British Airways at 1K:1K, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles and Delta at 1K:750, and Starwood at 1K:500.

Of course Americans can still get 25,000 bonus points for spending $2,000 on the consumer version of the Premier Rewards Gold card in 3 months. The annual fee is waived for the first year. The cards earns 3 points per dollar on airfare, 2 points on gas and groceries, and 1 points on everything else.  Plus I’ve been able to earn a bonus on this card on multiple occasions without any waiting period.

The American Membership Rewards program transfer partners can be seen here. Through May 31st 1K American Membership Rewards points transfer into 1,500 British Airways Avios. With the minimum of 27K points you would have after spending $2,000 on the Premier Rewards Gold card you can get 40,500 BA Avios, enough for a whopping 9 one-way tickets on short-haul flights like between New York and places like Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Montreal, or Toronto. or between Miami and places like Cancun or Grand Cayman, all on OneWorld partner American.

Other current limited time credit offers include the Chase British Airways 50K (for spending $1)/75K (for spending $10K in 1 year)/100K (for spending $20K in 1 year) offer as well as the American Express Business Platinum 25K (for spending $5K) offer.

Hi Dan,Talking about other-country credit cards, does it make sense that to get a platinum amex in Israel is way cheaper than anywhere else? If so, is it worth it just to have the physical card for its benefits?
Thank You!

Andrew

Thank you so much for taking the time to post about Canadian offers. I am an American living north of the 49th and struggle with the crappy offers. I already have the consumer AMEX Gold, won’t be getting the business card this time, but Ill look out for better offers as well.

Canada is in a housing and credit bubble, now we just need to tell them to inflate the point bubble too!

Dan

@yankel:

@Andrew:
If you have a SSN then why not get a card like Sapphire Preferred or British Airways with no foreign transaction fees?

Andrew

If you have a Canadian Bank account, most CAD banks accept USD Checks and even offer USD Cheqing.

vbce.ca offers competitive exchange rates in Vancouver and Richmond.

Hi,
you mentioned VANCOUVER – SEATTLE OR PORTLAND,
as it would be nice in theory;
I am not aware of any one world partner that has that route, the only one is Alaska, and they aren’t one-world.
any other ways?

ya

Just yeasterday i signed up for the united and saphire master card using 2bm, but i used the shorter existing cardmember application, will i still get the full offer for those cards?

Sarah

Dan, I have a random question, but I really hope you’ll answer:
I opened the Amex Plat Bus card and got $200 airline credit and bought 4 $50 virtual AA gift cards.
When I try sell them on Plastic Jungle, it says I’ll have to mail the card in but I don’t have the actual card-just the email.
Any suggestions? Am I missing something/did I do something wrong?

Thanks,

sara

I am Canadian but have a social security number. I am working on building my credit so I can get approved for the cards with signup bonuses. You mentioned applying for department store cc to build your credit. I don’t have a US license how can I go about apply for these cards.
