I’m halfway through a 2 year contract (just hit my first ‘anniversay’) on a family plan with two phones. Can I upgrade now and can I just keep the same plan, only commit for another year or two?

whats the best smart phone/pda out there?
I need reliabilty, i need it to work, and i cant have freezing, locking up, and slow start ups.
I have tried so far the Motorola Q and hated it. Even paid the big fee to cancel the service.
Looking at either palm treo or blackberry.
