Update: United’s new 787-9s delivered later this year will feature the new “United Elevated” interior with Starlink WiFi. The 8 bulkhead seats will be sold as Polaris Studio suites with 25% more room, an extra ottoman for a companion, playing cards to enjoy with someone joining you on the ottoman, a massive 27″ 4K OLED screens, caviar, upgrade amenity kits with luxury skincare products, pajamas on all flights, and Laurent Perrier Rose Champagne.

If only they would offer Laurent Perrier’s kosher options on routes like Tel Aviv…

Polaris Studio amenities:

United has yet to announce what it will cost to upgrade to the new Polaris Studio suites, or if complimentary upgrades will be available.

Polaris Studio passengers will also receive Global Services check-in and pre-boarding. They will also be eligible for Global Services tarmac transfers in luxury vehicles during tight connections. Global Services members are also brought to the front of the security line, though it remains to be seen if Polaris Studio passengers will receive that treatment as well.

All Polaris suites will have sliding doors with larger 19″ 4K OLED screens and access to a new grab-and-go snack bar. The seats should be slightly wider and longer than the current 787 product.

The seats appear to be Adient Ascent seats, which can be found on Qatar’s 787 suites, Hawaiian’s 787 suites, and American’s new 787 suites, though with higher-end finishes and larger and nicer OLED screens than on AA.

United’s current 787-9 features 48 Polaris seats, 21 Premium economy seats, 39 economy plus seats, and 149 economy seats.

The new 787-9 will feature 8 Polaris Studio suites, 56 Polaris suites, 35 Premium Economy seats, 33 economy plus seats, and 90 economy seats.

In Premium Economy, United will add 16″ 4K OLED screens, wireless and USB-C charging, and a privacy divider.

In Economy, United will add 13″ 4K OLED screens and the seat will be slightly wider than the current seats.

The new planes will start by flying from San Francisco to Singapore and London next year, with 30 787-9s expected by 2027.

United doesn’t currently have plans to retrofit existing Polaris cabins with the new design.

The layout will be a big change from the current Polaris layout.

Via Aerolopa, here is the current Polaris and Premium Economy cabins on United’s 787-9, with odd numbered rows having window seats next to the window and seats in the middle together and even numbered rows having all seats angled towards the aisle:

And via FT, here is the layout for the new 787-9. Notably, the front Polaris cabin has the middle seats facing each other, while the rear Polaris cabin has the middle seats facing the aisle:

What do you think of the new seats?

United is launching a new Polaris business class seat at an event in Brooklyn tomorrow at 5:30pm.

Rumors have been that the new seat will add doors to the product, which will match the industry direction for business class seats. Rumors have also been that the bulkhead will be more spacious and will be sold as an upgrade from business class, potentially branded as Polaris Plus.

On Reddit, u/Appropriate-Craft-39 writes that they work at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and shared some pictures from the event prep.

Cropped from Reddit:

It’s hard to see much, but that appears to confirm rumors of doors, there’s wood paneling, and the screens have certainly gotten larger as well.

Doors in business class are somewhat of a gimmick, as anyone walking by can see into the suite, but it does give a greater sense of privacy when you’re in your suite. Some people find them claustrophobic, but you can always leave them open if you don’t care for them.

American’s 787 with doors begins service next month.

Stay tuned for more details about the United seat tomorrow!

“Their kosher meals are the best in the skies” as an experienced flier i’m going argue and say the hermolis/kadassiah are the best kosher meals. But there is a saying in hebrew “al tam vreiach ein lehisvakaiach”

I’m 6’8 and found the current seat claustrophobic and unbearable (didn’t mind pre-Polaris biz) so I won’t be booking them again. The last thing I need is a door

Z-Sharp

Re doors… I realize it’s not JetBlue but… I was on a Mint transcontinental flight recently (1-1 configuration) and all the doors were opened the whole flight, and I couldn’t close mine. Then I came across this article. https://onemileatatime.com/news/jetblue-disabling-doors-mint-business-class-seats/

But like you said, it’s not really a big privacy thing anyway.

Who is this demo for? TA’s?

@Dan are we having you in Williamsburg tommorow?

A couple of comments.

A. Why are all the windows seats closer to the aisle and way from the windows? Wouldn’t most people appreciate being next to the window and way from the aisle? With the current Polaris setup, it alternates due to the way they fit it in. What is the reason they set it up this here?

B. Similar question regarding the middle seats for the front half. But I guess that would be a choice for those traveling alone with no single seats left and want to be more apart from the neighboring seat.

C. How did they get more width in economy and how much more did they get per seat?

EB

You know those are fake photos because flight attendants NEVER let you keep the windows open, especially on long haul flights. They claim it’s because the windows bothers the screens of other passengers on the other side of the plane but that’s garbage. The truth is they just want everyone to sleep and artificial night time makes their job MUCH easier.

Dan random but i recently booked a flight flying from mel to sfo on united using velocity (virgin australia) miles and it gave me a uited confirmation code which i then used on the united website to chose my seat but when i tried to order kosher food it didnt come up in the list of all the other special meals options and i had to call them to order it for me… i was wondering if you think its anti semitism?

tom bradley

wonder if this is begining of trend to turn back to first class

Avi
