Update: DEAD! Don’t miss it if this becomes alive again. Sign up for deal notification alerts here!

The Chase Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card® Card is an excellent all-around card thanks to its generous double point categories that include airfare, hotel stays, car rentals, restaurants, catering, fast food, coffee shops, bars, lounges, cafes, taxis, Uber, parking, limos, buses, trains, EZPass, bridges, ferries, timeshares, etc.  On the first Friday of each month the dining/catering category is bumped up to triple points, great time to pay for bar mitzvah or wedding bills!

The card is made from metal and a real live human being answers the phone when you call customer service without having to navigate a phone-tree maze.

Currently you get 40,000 points for spending $3,000 on a new Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and you get another 5,000 points for adding a free additional user card and using it once.

Those points can go far.  Here are some awesome things you can do with Ultimate Rewards points.

The $95 annual fee is currently waived for the first year.

However, last week DDF user ah reported that,

“My banker just told me there’s plans of either a decrease of bonus points or higher min spend for the sapphire preferred in the near future.”

I called several Chase branches in various cities and confirmed that the minimum spend threshold to get the bonus will indeed be going up on Monday.

In-branch changes often go hand-in-hand with the online offers, so right now is a good time to get a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card if you’re on the fence.

Why else should you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card besides the awesome signup bonus and bonus point categories?

-If you rent a car, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a must have.
In every country in the world you get primary rental car CDW insurance. Almost every other card only has secondary coverage when you rent a car in your home country. This means that if you damage your rental vehicle you must file the claim with your own personal insurance policy first, and only if they won’t cover the damage will the credit card cover the damage. Even additional cardholders get primary coverage when they rent.

Most credit cards also exclude countries like Israel from coverage, however all Chase cards cover you worldwide, including in Israel.  And they will give you a letter of coverage stating that you are covered in Israel so that you don’t have to argue at the rental car counter that your Chase Visa does give CDW coverage.

Plus you get double points on car rentals, meaning there is no better card out there for car rentals.

You are covered for almost all non-exotic rentals as long as the rental period is 31 days or less.

-Trip cancellation insurance is free.
Trip cancellation reimburses up to $10,000 per person, up to $20,000 per trip, and up to $40,000 per year if you need to cancel for injury, death, or sickness experienced by you, a traveling companion, or an immediate family member of you or your traveling companion. Other covered reasons include severe weather, military orders, terrorism, jury duty, home dwelling becoming inhabitable, quarantine, or financial insolvency of the travel agency or operator of your trip.

Other card benefits include:
-Price protection. Find a lower price in a store or online on a non-auction site within 90 days and get back up to $500 per item and $2,500 per year.
-Return protection. Return an item to a store that won’t take back an item for up to 90 days ($500/item, $1,000 per year)
-Purchase protection: 120 days of protection in case of damage of theft on items you buy ($500/item, $50K/account)
-Warranty protection: An extra year of warranty coverage on purchases ($10K/item, $50K/account)
-Lost Luggage Protection: If your checked or carry-on bags are lost you can be reimbursed by up to $3,000 per person.
-Trip Delay Protection: If you are delayed that either requires an overnight stay or is more than 12 hours you can be reimbursed for up to $500 in expenses per person.
-Baggage Delay Protection: If your bags are delayed by more than 6 hours you can reimbursed for up to $100 in expenses per person per day, for up to $500 per person.
-Travel Accident Insurance: Coverage if you are injured or killed on a trip.

The Chase Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card® Card earns Ultimate Rewards points and has the ability to transfer points into miles.  It also gives you the ability to transfer points from fantastic cards no annual fee cards like Chase Freedom and Ink Cash into miles as well, as those cards can’t transfer points directly into miles without having the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Plus card.

Points transfer at an equal ratio to:
-United (Star Alliance)
-Singapore (Star Alliance)
-British Airways (OneWorld)
-Korean (Skyteam)
-Southwest
-Virgin Atlantic
-Hyatt
-Marriott
-Ritz Carlton
-Priority Club
-Amtrak

I have sapphire non preferred bc I downgraded a few months ago. Will I be eligible to apply now?

Ddawg

Does the 3 browser method still work for chase cards?

3yummyboys

I downgraded and currently have non preferred sapphire. Can I still apply for preferred or do I need to close first?

lifesgood

What is the minimum spend now? 3k?

Dan

@3yummyboys:
Yes, if you are approved for Sapphire Preferred you’ll get the bonus.

You may have to close the non-Preferred card to get approved, but you’ll deal with that later.

@Ddawg:
Yes.

@lifesgood:
Yes.

Versus

In terms of benefits (price protection, warranty on items etc.)
How would you compare this card to SPG?
I have filed claims through Amex and never had an issue, I wonder if I’d have to jump through hoops with this card

Dan

@Versus:
For what SPG covers, it will be easier.

But SPG doesn’t have most of these benefits.
It has warranty and return protection (though it’s limited to $300 as opposed to $500 on CSP), but almost none of the other benefits.

3yummyboys

Thanks. Is there a reason you didn’t include the Chase Hyatt card when listing other cards to apply at the same time?

Dan

@3yummyboys:
No reason, there are dozens of possible cards.

jiji

I was looking at renting a car in Cancun and I see that US insurance companies dont cover Mexico car rentals. Doesnt that mean that all credit cards are primary at least in Mexico

3bm

just last friday i was approved for sapphire preferred, hyatt, and united explorer

D

Dan, I just applied and got approved for the British avios card. Do you think this will be hard to get approved for now?

Question

I just bought cologne from Perfumania w/ my Sapphire Preferred card. I received the item the next day and tried it and realized that i had bought the wrong scent. I called up customer service and asked about returning it only to be told that once it’s opened, they can’t accept the return. So I called up Chase and asked them about using my Sapphire preferred return protection or purchase protection and they said that as per the benefit guide, perfumes and colognes are not covered.
Is there anything else I can do like dispute the charge?

Tj

Hey Dan I got an important question!which card should I transfer to if I want to transfer a balance and not pay interest the first 12 months or so Cus I heard there are cards with wich I can do that??

acer

if we are going to do a second card, which one is better- Marriott or British Airways card?

Chaim

I got approved for a shappire a year and half ago could i reapply

yes

@chaim
yes

David

If the deal is only in-store, can you still do an AOR? Like going online within an hour and getting two other Chase cards? I would assume not.

Dan

@jiji:
It should.

@3bm:
Nice.

@D:
Shouldn’t be an issue.

@Question:
Sounds like you’re out of luck.

@Tj:

@acer:
BA for sure.

@Chaim:
If you don’t have a Sapphire Preferred right now then you get it.

@David:
What is only in-store?

Anonymous

For a second card which one is better now marriott – hyatt – united explorer or southwest?

Dan

@Anonymous:
Really just boils down to your needs.

Anonymous

@Dan: i would rather take the united card but its only 30k bonus points instead of southwest which is 50k

Dan

Ian, feel free to email me.

@Anonymous:
35K if you add an additional user.

Eli

Min spend will be $4K – no biggie. Bonus staying the same

David

Sorry! I meant in-branch.

Tim

Eli is correct. Rep at a Chase branch confirmed this. Also, I received a targeted offer for the Sapphire Preferred requiring $4K spend for the 40K bonus points.

Al

How long after closing your Sapphire Preferred can you get the sign up bonus again? Isn’t it 24 months?

Sam

@Al:
There’s no wait time needed.

Julien

@Al: It’s 24 months since you last received the bonus. So if you just closed the card but got the sign up bonus over 24 months ago, you should be good.

Sam

No need to wait 24 months for this card.

Julien

“I understand that any new cardmember bonus offers for this product are not available to either current or previous cardmembers of this product who received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the last 24 months.”

Sam

Don’t believe everything you read.

Julien

Forgive me if I’m a bit cautious about making sure I get the 45,000 UR points…

Mark the Shark

Wow!! Better apply NOW! Do we get all of the perks of this awesome card if we apply not using your links, or do these benefits only accrue if we use your referral links?

Dan

@Eli:
No biggie for some, for others even $3K is a stretch.

@Mark the Shark:
It’s an excellent card and it’s going to get more difficult to get the bonus come Monday.

Not sure why the sarcasm is needed other than you being you.

sam

if i was charged annual fee few months ago when i got approved will chase refund it bec of offer

R

What is better card for flight delay or car rental
Use bold or freedom?

ZD

Tried applying and was told further review needed. I have another Chase CC with a large CL on it. Whats my next step? Calling recon?

Dovid

Does the ink bold card also give you 2 times the points when you pay your ezpass?

Dave

@ZD. Pick up the phone and call recon.

gavi

Do I need to purchase my entire trip on the card to get the trip cancelation coverage (I already put the deposit on another card)

Anonymous

I have 65k freedom ur do I need a sapphire to transfer or is there another option to transfer?

Anonymous

Why are there no chase branches in Baltimore

Mutty

Dan, where do I click to go to this offer? Or is it gone already?
