I don’t usually post hidden city fares, but there seems to be significant interest in this one.

Virgin America will start to fly from JFK to Fort Lauderdale in December.  Priceline will sell you a Virgin America flight from JFK to Fort Lauderdale connecting on the west coast.

If you have lots of time on your hand and love miles you can spend all day flying to Florida like that and you’ll earn over 10,000 miles on a round-trip when credited to a partner airline like Singapore.

Or you can just book JFK-Fort Lauderdale and get off the plane in Los Angeles or San Francisco. Or you can book Fort Lauderdale-JFK and get off the plane in Los Angeles or San Francisco as well.

Of course luggage will be an issue, so you’ll either have to:
1. Travel with just carry-ons
2. Ship your luggage in advance with UPS
3. Have 1 passenger book a regular JFK-LAX flight and have the rest of the passengers book the hidden city flight. Virgin America allows 1 person to check up to 10 bags for just $25 each, so this is actually a very practical solution for a family.

You will have to buy a regular one-way ticket back home.  You can do that for less on some dates thanks to 20% off Virgin America flights.  Of course with the 20% off, a one-way from JFK to Angeles can be had for as little as $137.31, but you can still save a few shekels with the hidden city method on those dates. Some dates are significantly more than that without booking the hidden city, so give a look and see what makes sense for you.

Note that you can’t get 20% off this hidden city fare as it’s not bookable directly from Virgin America.

Now I could be lazy (some would say mean) and just tell folks to find the valid dates themselves by using the tutorials I’ve written on the subject:

How can I cancel my Miami tickets bought on priceline with a sapphire preffered after 24 hours?

Dev

Dan- any way to fly from LA to FLL?

AJK

Even at 10K (actually it’s 9634 mi), you’re paying 2.5 cents per RDM.

Dan

@Mac:
You have until 11:30pm the day after purchasing.

After that the insurance allows you to cancel for a covered reason only, call Chase for the details.

@Dev:
Not that I saw.

@AJK:
It’s more than 10K via SFO.
And nobody said it’s a great MR for the miles, just a cute way to get to Florida and earn a nice chunk of miles if you are a bored teenager 😉
Then again I earned over 100K miles in 2 days when I did a MR back in my bochur days.

joe

Hey Dan what if the flight gets cancelled or delayed is there a chance they will make me fly direct to final destination or through a different stop over other than the original stopover location?

Mendel

http://www.skiplagged.com is the best easy to use site to find hidden city ticketing.

Dan,
Need help with a one way ticket from TLV to JFK mid to end of June.
The cheapest fare on a reputable airline is $900 for a RT on Turkish. I already looked on Matrix…

sholom

Will this work from JFK to FLL? Are there any cheap tickets from JFK to FLL?

ars

Seems like the jfk to fll on jan 7 and 10th are direct on virgin…(when checking on priceline) there is no stopover written…?

Deal Guy

What is the average UPS price on 50 lbs that you would normally put in a suitcase?

@Dan:

Dan, Virgin just changed my routing on this. Made it a non stop JFK-FLL. Anyone else reporting this? my date was 2/25

Dan

@M:
Did you call and ask for it to be reverted to what you bought?

M

@Dan:

Bought via orbitz. After speaking to an orbitz agent for about one hour (and he in turn being on the line with virgin), i was told that virgin’s system would not allow them to “add an extra leg” to the trip (even though that’s what I originally had)

Was transfered to a supervisor at Orbitz, who got permission from Virgin to reticket me in about 10 minutes! Turns out one or all of the 4 agents involved in the 1st hour might have been a little think in the head. The last Virgin agent said they sometimes dont see connections for the original flight in the system, so once she verified my original routing, she authorized the change.

Just thought I would let people know, in case it happens to you too!
