I went to Buenos Aires with my wife and son in May.  If you are a foodie there are tons of kosher restaurants.  While I wasn’t enamored of the kosher McDonalds (though it’s still worth trying out yourself so that you can bad-mouth it as well), I thought that Asian was one of the best kosher restaurants in the world and we went to eat there 3 times in 6 days.  There are dozens of places for incredible kosher Ice Cream as well, and it will also be some of the best and more unique that you’ve ever tried.  Kosher bakeries churn out all kinds of delicious dulce de leche treats as well as churros and other goodies.

The local markets are very fun, we got stunning pictures from a 2 hour photo shoot on the cheap from local photographers, and we had a blast just exploring a very happening foreign city.

The city feels very European, much more so than other South American cities.  Best of all, unlike Europe, the dollar goes extremely far in Argentina.  Everyone there is desperate for dollars and will often pay massive premiums over the regular exchange rate to buy dollars off of you.  You will laugh at just how cheap a taxi ride can be when you trade your dollars in for Pesos at favorable rates.

The Park Hyatt Buenos Aires is a fantastic hotel in the Parisian inspired neighborhood of Recoleta, we got a humungous suite when using our free nights from the Hyatt credit card, and received a massive comped kosher breakfast each morning as well for being diamond at the time that we made the reservation. There are also kosher restaurants and shuls within walking distance of the hotel, though it’s not in the main (rundown) section of Jewish community.  Additional nights cost 18K Chase Ultimate Rewards or Hyatt points per night.

Beware that there is a $160 reciprocity fee that needs to be paid when you land in Buenos Aires if you only have an American passport.  That fee covers you for the next 10 years.  They’ll be happy to take any credit card though, so at least you earn the miles 😀

While you’re down there you should definitely consider using 15,000 Avios to fly round-trip to Iguazu Falls for a couple days to see it from the Brazilian and Argentine sides.  Iguazu is fantastic beyond words, one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen.  It literally makes Niagara look like a leaky faucet.  There’s even a Sheraton inside the national park so you’ll get a head start over everyone else and be able to use your Starpoints.

levi

dan y do u send poeple always 2 orbitz , in this case u can get the same price on TAM owen website – Plus u get 3 points per $ on amex gold , y would i buy it from orbitz ,cancellation policy is the same ???

Dan

@hey:
Read the fine print.

@Sam:
I haven’t been to Iguazu in over 7 years. You can google it if you’d like but pics won’t serve it justice, I guarantee you that.

@Esther:
Doubtful.

@levi:
Orbitz doesn’t charge you, the airline still bills you. So you do get the bonus points for all credit cards.

Also where do you see TAM’s cancellation policy? Orbitz’ cancellation is quick, easy, and very generous. Book a flight after midnight and you have almost 2 days to cancel for free.

sgf

@levi: IME Tam’s website sucks, orbitz is better user friendly site

hey

so if i cant make it and get a doctor to say i cant go… would that work? im about to book

Yitzie K

@Dan is there such a deal from CLE? i have a sister and brother in law that live in Argentina and i would love to visit them!

Dan

@hey:
You need to read the contract to see what is covered.

@Yitzie K:
Just use 9,000 Avios to fly round-trip to JFK or 15,000 to fly round-trip to Miami.

hey

this is what it say ”Get reimbursed up to 100% if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for reasons like illness, injury, layoff, and more”

Yehuda

If I book tickets for my wife and I, can I cancel one before 11 AM but keep the other?

levi

sorry did not know that orbitz doesnt charge it , is that only orbitz , wat about expedia priseline …… ?

Pessi

Could this be booked just to Rio without continuing on to Buenos Aries? My mother has family there.

answer to yehuda

i would have to book it separately so u have 2 booking ref.

reuvenhunt

Could you earn 100% mileage when accruing on Aegean?

Dan

@Pessi:
No.

@answer to yehuda:
You probably don’t need to do that, they should be able to split it off.
But it will be easier if you just book it separately.

@reuvenhunt:
50% on Aegean.

Levi

06/19-06/26
MIA to EZE $250!!!

Just booked tickets for my wife and I!!!

david

@Levi: EZE??

Eddy

@Levi: How did you get it down to $250? Did you use a coupon or something? I’m getting ~$290

Ben

Dan- Trying to book, says on the Orbitz confirmation page that ticket is non-refundable. Before i book- are you positive that this falls within the regular Orbitz cancellation policies? I’m told it differs per each airline.

Kevin

The ticket says non refundable, but do u know if this orbitz rule will still allow cancellation with in 24 hours? Even if it says non refundable?

Levi

Yes,

I cancelled 2 tickets in the past 2 hours. Its no Issue

Dan

@Kevin:
Of course, almost all tickets are non-refundable. That’s the points of the Orbitz policy.

Ben

I booked, even though it said Non-refundable on the checkout page (i trusted Dan!). When Orbitz shows a confirmation page, there is a button to click to cancel the reservation with no penalty. Doesnt say until when you have this right to cancel, so i called them directly and gave them my Orbitz record locator to check. They confirmed i have until November 27 at 10 PM central (i booked at 12:27 AM on the 26th- so almost 48 hours!).
Thanks Dan!

Dan

@Ben:
Just like I said, but thanks for verifying 😀
Hard to beat a 46 hour cancellation policy!

Kevin

Thanks, I just booked for my wife and I to go !

Sam

Just booked March 6th till the 14th.

Shlomo

Thanks DAN just booked for me and wife
Now I am off opening Hyatt and united Credit Cards
I am new to all of this Thanks Dan for all the info

Ben

Dan-
This $160 “reciprocity fee”- what is that? Is that per person? Just booked 13 tickets- is this going to add another $2000 to the cost of our trip??? Most of them are kids- does that make a difference?

Eddy

@Ben: that’s a $160 visa upon arrival fee for US citizens

Ben

@Eddy: Per person?? Even kids??

yoel

is this fare valid for a trip staring in buenos aires,to miami?
i for a round trip?

Mishy

@Levi:

Sorry folks, I am new to this. I followed dates as suggested and searched ita and orbitz from Miami and see rates at 798. Is the deal dead? Or I am not doing something right?
