It has a $75 annual fee and gives Gold elite status for as long as you’re a cardholder, which gets you free breakfast, including the most over-the-top breakfast I’ve had in my life at the Waldorf Jerusalem.  If you spend $40K/year you’ll get top-tier Diamond status, which gets confirmed room upgrades and space available suite upgrade at hotels like the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem. You’ll also get the 5th night free on award stays.

-Until 5/31, The Hilton Honors™ Card from American Express is offering 80K points for spending $2,000 within 3 months.  It offers 7 points per dollar for spending at Hilton, 5 points per dollar at US supermarkets, restaurants, and gas stations, and 3 points per dollar elsewhere. The bonus is valid if you haven’t had this particular Hilton AMEX before.

It has no annual fee and offers Silver status for as long as you are a cardmember. You’ll also get the 5th night free on award stays. If you spend $20K on the card you’ll get Hilton Gold status.

Hilton now allows you to pool your points together between friends and family. Once the pool is set up each member can transfer up to 500,000 points into the pool and each member can receive up to 2,000,000 points per calendar year. Each member can transfer and pool points up to 6 times per calendar year.

At the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem we were treated to a fantastic daily breakfast, which is free for Hilton Gold and Diamond members. There is a mind-boggling quantity of awesome kosher food there, from dozens of daily hot dishes to hard cheeses, fresh fruits and pastries to fresh squeezed juices, as well as on-demand dishes like french toast, pancakes, waffles, and eggs. Unlimited wine, hot or cold chocolate drinks, and espresso drinks are included as well!

Gold and Diamond members get upgrades, food and drink amenities, late checkout, and other great benefits. Their Friday night Shabbos meals are pricey, but are well worth the expense (DDFers agree with that take as well), and the in-house restaurants are excellent as well.

Hilton is a tough currency to love due to the high point requirements and lack of a fixed award chart, but we absolutely loved our stay at the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem last year and hope to stay there again. These limited time offers are all some of the richest that have ever been offered for these cards.

The Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem opened in 2014 and is a gem, possibly the finest hotel in the whole country.

Any way to convert these points to Amex or airline points?

yoohoo

Hard at work, even in the Maldives! Applause!

Yaakov

How many points did the Waldorf cost? I didn’t see it in the post. Thank you

Jeff

In your opinion what’s the best offer out of these? First time Hilton for me.

Thanks

Sam

Thanks Dan – If I use HHonors points to book my stay, am I still entitled to free breakfast (as a gold member with the card) or does the stay have to be paid with dollars to qualify for the free breakfast?

Yossi

Is there a buisness card?

james

With the recent change in the Hilton honors redemption program, most redemptions for standard rooms are running just under 1/2 cent per point, and upgraded rooms or suites are between 1/4 and 1/3 cents per point. Exceptions may be super high end redemptions or special events.

B

Will i be able to get the Hilton Amex offer if have the Hilton Citi card?

Shampz

Yaakov – you need to go on the hilton website and check your dates to see how many points it will be, there is no one set rate.

Jeff – I did the Hilton Reserve first, for one year. The 2 night benefit wins out. After a year, I downgraded it to a no-fee Amex as I did not spend $10k, and I got the Citi card for the bonus.

Sam – I always stay at Waldorf on points or certificates, and I confirm with the hotel that I’ll receive free breakfast. Never had a problem receiving the benefit.

Yossi – Nope.

B – Yup, no issues.

BCL

What is availability for the Waldorf Jerusalem on free night certificates in the summer?

TomSAN

Where does it say that you get a free night after your first anniversary on the Hilton Surpass card? And is the free night only for the first anniversary or do you get one on every anniversary (like the Hyatt or IHG cards)?

sarstuff

Still trying to figure this all out so looking for advise from you savvy points users. So far I’ve only used Chase points for airline tickets (yes I have the Ink, Freedom and Reserve), we rarely need hotel rooms. However later this year I’ll be needing multiple hotel rooms for a simcha. I need my chase points to pay for flights for this simcha – are these cards the way to go to supplement my points in order to pay for hotel rooms?

Ljderm

As james points out, be aware that 100k Hilton points are nowhere near as valuable as Hyatt or Starwood points. I think they even pale in comparison to regular Marriott points (which of course are 1/3 the value of Starwood Points).

Also remember if you have one of the AMEX Plat cards (the pricey ones) you automatically get Hilton HHonors Gold, thus the free breakfast benefit.

Lib

I chatted with the online and Waldorf for the nights I will be in Israel and it was 82k a night for 2 ppl with no option for 4 ppl – do u know any way around that? I need a room for 4 ppl

maya

i have the regular hilton honors amex card; when i went to apply, it says “request upgrade” to this surpass card.

it also says in the T and C’s:

Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product.

Anybody know if that applies to the Surpass card (meaning bonus points) or if it applies to the regular hilton honors card (meaning NO bonus points)

eli

is there a way to get amex to match the 80k if i just got the 50k offer

jayz

Dan, what do you mean “(officially for use on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays)” is there any way to get around that?

CollegeGirl

Whats the average credit score you need to be eligible for these cards?

Fridela

Thanks Dan for posting! Enjoy your trip!!

I am trying to figure this out – if I spend 60k at the Hilton with this card, I would get 100k for signing up plus 720k points for the spend, total of 820k points. Is that worth around $7000? Is there a way to use them besides for free nights?

Fridela

– so it looks like if I would want to change the points over to an airline, they are worth around 10% so 100k bonus points moved to Delta is 10k. So spending at the Hilton, would be better with any card giving me 1.5 or 2 points/$ as opposed to 12x with this card.

Anyone know if a. I would get 12x points for an event there (ballroom, catering)? and b. If these points can be redeemed for an event there?

TIA!!

ps. I asked the Amex rep on the site, she does not know.

CUBS FAN

Dan,

I currently have the Hilton Honors Amex with no annual fee. If I want to upgrade to Hilton Honors Surpass to get the 100k bonus for $3k spend will that initiate another credit pull against my FICO or does upgrading the card and keeping the same credit line avoid the credit pull and get me the points. It sounds from this promotion and the solicitations I’ve been receiving from AMEX that I would get the points for upgrading. Just not sure about credit pull implications.

CUBS FAN

Can anyone advise on my above post? Does a targeted upgrade with an Amex consumer card cause a credit pull or will they just extend the same credit line on the upgraded Surpass Card and there will be no impact to my FICO or Chase 5/24 rule?

mareh

@Yaakov: 80k points a night for the waldorf

Chicago Cat

Should I open this card or Starwood card from this post. TIA.

Netlevy

Is it worth the $75 for the 20K extra bonus points?

@gggt: I stayed there this year (2017). The Teudah is officially Rabbanut Yerushalayim (NOT Rabbanut Mehadrin Yerushalayim.) However, the following was explained to me by Eli Bayles, Morning Mashgiach of the Waldorf:

The hotel has two completely separate kitchens one on the main level for the hotel’s dining room and the other on the lower level for the catering hall. They have a Mashgiach Temidi from 5Am to midnight (There is no real room service after midnight, so I suppose the kitchen is closed.) and the mashigichim have full control over what comes into the hotel as far as food delivery.

Reason #1 for not having a Mehadrin Teudah:
All private parties in the catering hall can be under any hashgocho you wish, and therefore they allow non-menhadrin products to be used in the catering hall kitchen and served in the catering hall.

Reason #2.
In the hotel’s dining room all ingredients are mehadrin.
To paraphrase: “Fruits/Vegetables are either Eida Charedit or Efrati. Chicken or meat are from Rabanut Yerushalayim Mehadrin, Kehilot, Rubin, Landau, or Eida Charedit. All other products including dairy are Chatam Sofer or above.”

However Rav Bayles explains the sole reason the dining room not being considered mehadrin by the rabbanut is because they follow the psak of the Rema – that it is enough for a Yehudi to turn on the fire to be considered Bishul Yisroel. This ruling is not enough for sefaradim as sefaradim need a Yehudi to put the food on the fire to be considered Bishul Yisroel and therefore Rabbanut Yerushalayim does not grant them a Mahadrin Teudah, since the Rema’s psak is not ‘kosher’ enough for Sefaradim.

Again this was back in January. If you are going now I suggest you contact the hotel and ask to speak with the mashgiach and confirm this for yourself, and not rely on my experience from then.

All the best.

mia flyer

@dan , there are rumors going around that the waldorf was just sold and things may be changing there that may effect redemption

Anonymous

@A:

can anybody verify that point 2 is one of main reasons its not mehadrin?

A

@Anonymous: What I wrote above was not my personal opinion of what is/was happening there; it is what the mashgiach actually responded to me when I asked him why they don’t bother with a Mehadrin Teudah. The only opinion I interjected above was that about not being room service after midnight.

I’m not sure if 1) you simply misunderstood what I wrote, 2) are looking for a recording of my conversation, or 3) if you are asking what I wrote has been independently verified. If #3, then I can’t say I independently verified what I was told. If you plan to stay there you should ask the mashgiach directly yourself, and if you doubt his response you should certainly do your own due diligence.

Anonymous

@A:

not questioning what you heard I just wonder if others received same response. I found it a little surprising that they will not give rabbanut mehadrin because they go like the Rema in regards to Bishul Israel. Is this an official written policy for Rabbanut Yerushalyim?

A

@Anonymous: Personally this doesn’t surprise me. I would hope on the same level that when a mehadrin restaurant says glatt, they are glatt lchol hadeos and be stricter and use the ashkenaz defintion of glatt, as sfard glatt alone is not kosher enough for an ashkenazi who is makpid to only eat glatt.

I am sure this is not the forum for this discussion, but Rav Yechiel Spira seems to imply in at least one place on his site JerusalemKosherNews that Bishul Yisroel Lchol Hadeos is not merely a requirement of Jerusalem Rabbinate to give a mehadrin teudah, but rather a requirement laid down by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel to all local Rabbinates as [one of] a minimum standard for ‘mehadrin’. You can read this article and draw your own conclusions. Also having emailed R’ Spira before about other kashruth questions, I can tell you he would be happy to answer your questions.

Anonymous

@A: @A:

A lot of sephardim are mapkid on beit yosef which is more glatt than ashkenaz glatt; what do you mean ashkenaz galtt is more makpid than sefard glatt?

Anonymous

so is 80K enough for a free night at Waldorf Jerusalem

A

@Anonymous: @Anonymous:

A brief description from Chabad.org:

“…At the same time, when it comes to finding sirchot, not all areas of the lung are equal. While all hold that there are certain areas of the lung where a sirchah will not render the animal non-kosher, there is a disagreement as to what exactly these areas are. In this aspect the Sephardic view (following the Beit Yosef) is more lenient, with more areas where a sirchah can exist without affecting the kosher status of the animal. Those same sirchot would make the entire animal treif for Ashkenazim (following the rulings of Rabbi Isserles). In other words, while Rabbi Caro is more strict on the type of sirchah, he is more lenient when it comes to where it can be found.

“In practice, many Sephardim follow the stringencies of both Rabbi Moshe Isserles and Rabbi Yosef Caro, so that they (a) don’t rely on any of the tests of sirchot, and (b) also don’t rely on the leniencies of Rabbi Yosef Caro about the sirchot found in certain areas.”

So referencing the line “Those same sirchot would make the entire animal treif for Ashkenazim (following the rulings of Rabbi Isserles).” then like I stated above sfard glatt alone is not kosher enough for an ashkenazi who is makpid to only eat glatt.

A

@Anonymous: Actually I probably should have said when it says glatt they use the stringencies of both instead of allowing you to infer ashkenaz was ‘more’ glatt. But yes, it seems Ashkenazim CANNOT rely on Bet Yosef alone.

Anonymous

@Fridela: the bonus only applies if u spend 60k at Hilton for 12x or 6x at supermarket are u doing that?

Dean

@steve: you must be staying there to get it

Anonymous

@A: I see. But as far as I understand when you see beit yosef meat today that is the most stringent and good for all edos on a practical level?

Anonymous

@Anonymous: it’s an amex, you can spend anywhere

A

@Anonymous: I don’t know. I’m not a Rav nor a mashgiach. I would hope here in the US when I walk it to a reliably certified kosher butcher shop under an ashkenazi hashgocho that any meat marked Bet Yosef is yotzei kol hadeos.

As for what goes on in EY you would have to ascertain there. But my point was if it’s R.Y.Mehadrin that I would *hope* the glatt its yotzei kol hadeos just like I would hope bishul yisroel is too.

A gut yontif.
