Sprint to Charge $10 Smartphone Tax
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:54:08 PM »
OK so I'll start the thread:
Its been reported in another thread (should be joined here) that Sprint will begin charging, effective Jan 30th a $10 fee for using ANY smartphone down to our old little centro.
My question is, that Today someone I know was told that they can't activate a Centro because they don't have Data plan. Does this make sense? Any connection?

This is already being discussed, starting here (last paragraph of the post).

Firstly it should have been effective 1/30 not immediately, secondly, my understanding was that you needed 10 dollars if you have data but if you only want to use the centro for talk and text you didn't. Is that also changing?

Your friend has a legacy (read:old) plan that only allows certain phones. None of the newer (e.g. Android, BB Bold/Style etc.) smartphones. If he wants one of those phones he's gotta change plans.

It's hard to know what will happen to accounts like his come 1/30.

Wow, this looks like an utter cash grab.

$10/month as soon as I ESN swap my phone?  What if I just ESN swap to a new Centro?

Anyone going to use this to cancel their contracts?

I don't think the Centro is considered a smartphone.

Did you guys see the 4/1/11 changes to Sprint Premier, looks like no more free phone every year for me :(

Wow, this is much worse than I thought! If you are on a legacy plan you can't even activate a new centro without losing your legacy plan!
They want folks off legacy plans for good now!.

Q: "Will customers on legacy plans be able to keep their historical plans when they upgrade to a smartphone and pay the $10 Premium Data add-on charge?
A: No, customers on legacy plans, such as Fair & Flexible, wanting to upgrade to a smartphone will need to change their plan to a data plan and pay the additional $10 Premium Data add-on charge."

And Centro is included:
-List of devices requiring the $10 Premium Data add-on charge upon activation (includes but is not limited to):
Blackberry 8350i
Blackberry 8830 and older BlackBerry phones
BlackBerry Bold™ 9650 smartphone
Blackberry Curve 8330
BlackBerry Curve™ 8530 smartphone
BlackBerry Curve™ 9330 smartphone
BlackBerry Style™ 9670 smartphone
Blackberry Tour 9630
iDEN BlackBerry phones
HTC EVO
HTC EVO Shift
HTC Hero
HTC Hero™ with Google™
HTC Snap (s511)
HTC Touch Diamond
HTC Touch Pro
HTC Touch Pro 2
LG Optimus S (LS670)
Motorola ES400
Motorola ES400S
Motorola i1
Palm Centro
Palm Pixi
Palm Pre
Palm Treo 755p
Palm Treo Pro

Is it $10 monthly?
Yes.

I assume this is for new subscribers only?

Edit: Never mind. I found the below article which explains all the details. It is only for new subscribers or new activations done after 1/30 (including upgrades, ESN swaps etc...)

All smartphones will get this charge no matter if you use data or block it.

WoW, stubborn...
If you had a plan like mine...
The i500/i550 series were actually my favorite phones.  Small, compact flip palm pilots.  They're just old.

If I had a plan like yours I'd lease it out and get myself an unlimited plan where I can get a real phone :P

I know Palm OS like the back of my hand.  Every single in-and-out that it can do.  And I don't feel like I'm missing anything, although I'm sure I probably am.
Don't really care to learn a new OS.

Just out of curiosity though, how are the newer phones with using them as a modem?  Can that still be done for free?
