CC Rewards for giving tzedaka

Don't forget to use Chase Freedom to give tzedaka.  You get 5% back (5p/$) on charitable donations Oct-Dec.

Plus 10% bonus and 10 points per transaction if you have Chase Checking and transferable to CO/Hyatt with Sapphire Preferred or Ink Bold.

Better yet - use credit card and give 5% more than you had planned!! That should cover the processing fee and then some.

And you'll still come out ahead :D
Give $1,000 and you get a $50 rebate.
Give $1,050 and you'll get a $52.50 rebate, so still less than $1,000 out of pocket.
And that's besides for the 10%+10 point bonus for checking.

So for $1000 you could expect 65 points? (50 for 5% category reward, 10 for 10 points and 5 for 10% bonus)?

5,000 points for 5%
500 points for 10% bonus
10 points for the transaction

Total of 5,510 points is my guess.  It's possible the 10% bonus only applies to base spending in which case that would give 100 points or a total of 5,110 points.

I knew my math was way off, thanks for clarifying. I know which card I'm using for my charitable donations until December :)

Is there a limit on how many points you can earn with the Freedom bonus categories?

So maximum of $1,500 in donations, for 7,500 points without checking.

Anyone know if the 10% checking bonus is on top of the 1% base or the 5% total bonus?

the %5 bonus is only on the first $1500
The $1500 max is not per category - it's for the 5% bonus overall.  So you have to include purchases on dining, dept stores, and movie theaters.

you can, but you don't have too.

just donated with my chase card

I don't know if it's per quarter or whatnot, but you have to activate the 5% bonus categories on Chase.com (there are also other ways to activate).

I don't know if it's per quarter or whatnot, but you have to sign up for it the 5% bonus categories on Chase.com.
He meant when factoring in when the bonus tops out you have to include all spending in all bonus categories because the limit is $1500 of bonuses per quarter and not per quarter per category.

Personally it's too much of a hassle to keep track of the ever-changing categories, so for regular spending I stick to cards I need to hit a spend-requirement on (as an avid churner I almost always have these), or I go with the default cards in my wallet (Amex SPG or Chase Sapphire Preferred).

If you have the Discover More card you can get 5% on the other categories (except movie theaters) this quarter so might as well use the $1500 all on tzedaka.

I'm sure there are people out there with all the rotating bonus cards (freedom discover more citi) who keep using the different cards for different purchases. If you play your cards right you come out ahead.

That's debatable. I've racked up hundreds in Discover 'Cashback' credit that I'm still not sure how to cash it out. It doesn't always make sense to have lower balances dispersed between more rewards programs, IMHO.
