Discover CashBack Bonus - Best Redemption Option
« on: August 06, 2010, 05:44:16 PM »
I have nearly $400 in discover cashback. If I take cash, I get the amount I have on account. They also have redemption options for merchandise and gift-cards, where I can get a higher value than my cashback balance, e.g. 150% of my cashback value in brookstone giftcards.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to maximize the value of my cashback balance?

I don't have any experience with Discover. But you can check ebay to see how much the gift cards are selling for to see wether it's worth cashing in at 150% & then selling them.

Doesn't look like there's much of a  a market for Brookstone GCs. As far as other GCs go, the bonus is 25%, and since GCs get a discount, it doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle/risk.

Thanks for the insight though.

I know this is an old thread but why start a new thread for no reason  :)

For those of us with discover cc's, the 5% cashback categories has always had a limit of $300/($15 cashback). I noticed that starting next quarter the limit will be $1500/($75 cashback).

Wonder if the freedom card is the cause of this.

Prob, Chase has been heavily advertising that advantage on commercials.

Discover is going to have to do something big to remain competitive, and I don't think this (the OP) or even this counts.

I've never seen anything like that. I could flip those for 88% of face value.

There is a shell $50 GC for $45

Or you can use ur cash back to make purchases at amazon (if you have an affiliate link you can get %4-%6 pct back from your order...)
It is all from Hashem and he will continue to give!

At 50 for 45 it isn't much of a deal, thanks though.

You can get a $100 Hyatt GC for $40 in Discover points and then sell it for at least $70 (giftcards.com). Plastic Jungle says up to 87.15% but I can't get an actual quote without getting the GC first. Still, 1.75 cpp is not bad for Discover, no?

edit: I see you can get 83% at some sites I never heard of before (http://www.abcgiftcards.com/store/index.php?main_page=sell or http://www.cardcash.com/sell-gift-cards).

Are you sure that's a standard Hyatt GC? Based on the terms I'm not sure it is...

According to the terms, it's a cert. not a GC:

Quote
Offer valid for: This Certificate is valid for a total of $100 off a consecutive two-night stay at participating Hyatt Hotels or Resorts listed on this Certificate. Certificate is not valid when quoted or paid room rate falls below $120 per night at most participating Hyatt Hotel or $180 per night at participating Hyatt Resorts and the following hotels: Grand Hyatt Atlanta, Hyatt Regency Coral Gables, Hyatt Regency Fisherman's Wharf, Hyatt Regency Harborside, Grand Hyatt New York, Hyatt Regency San Diego, Grand Hyatt San Francisco, Hyatt Regency San Francisco and Grand Hyatt Washington. Certificate is not valid at Park Hyatt Hotels or Hyatt International locations. Stay/Usage Requirements: Reservations and this discount program are subject to availability at time of booking and must be made in advance by calling Hyatt at 1-888-628-1234 or your travel planner. When making reservations specify the offer code on the face of the Certificate. This Certificate may be applied to the qualifying rate for one guest room, single or double occupancy and does not apply to food, beverage, incidental expenses, service charges or taxes. Additional guests are subject to individual charges. No photocopies, facsimiles or duplications of this Certificate will be accepted. Offer valid only when this Certificate is surrendered at Hyatt check-in. Refunds will not be issued for previous stays. Individual hotels may restrict specific room accommodations for which discount is valid. This Certificate is not valid in conjunction with other promotional or discount programs, Gold Passport or other frequent flyer awards or certificates, group travel, tour packages, government rates or other special rate programs. A maximum of two (2) Certificates may be used on stays of four (4) or more consecutive nights for a total of $200 off the room portion of the stay. Date of stay is determined by the date of check-out. Back to back stays at the same location are considered as only one stay. Normal arrival/departure restrictions may apply. Blackout periods may be in effect during certain seasonal periods, special events or citywide conventions. This Certificate is not negotiable, nor redeemable for cash or other substitutions and will not be replaced if lost or stolen or otherwise destroyed. Credit will not be issued for any Certificate that is not fully used. Gold Passport members will receive points for the applicable room charges actually paid. Participating properties are subject to change. Hyatt reserves the right to alter or terminate this program at any time. You're probably right, I didn't look too deeply. Now that you mention it, it seems like almost all the double (or more) value redemption options are travel certs that have conditions about what you can use them one, which almost definitely means they're not the same type of GC or eCert you can sell on PJ or other sites.

Correct. Hence my quest for a better redemption than $25 GC for $20 in Discover rewards dollars.

(I know this not really the proper thread for this, but this thread was anyways dead)

I bought some stuff from staples through shopdiscover mall and paid with a different cc.

I'm trying to figure out if I got 5% cb for the purchase. Is there anyway to see the breakdown of my cb earnings?

I see it on my Discover online statement, on the right hand side of each statement there's a box titled "Detailed Rewards Activity" which shows the info you're looking for.

Wondering if Carnival cruises would be a good option $100 gets you a $200 certificate. PJ is paying 84% which would be a redemption of 1.68cpp. I'm wondering if this is a standard GC or a voucher as mentioned above which PJ wouldn't buy.

The T&Cs: - Your certificate will only be applied to new reservations made through the Cruise and Vacation Desk at 1-877-835-8738 - www.cruiseandvacationdesk.com/dcbb.
- Your certificate may be combined with most cruise line offers, such as senior promotions, resident specials, and past passenger rates. Subject to availability, some restrictions may apply, please call for details.
- You may apply one certificate per room booked.
- Certificate amount will be applied towards lowest available cruise fare when received by the Cruise and Vacation Desk prior to your departure date.
- Certificates have NO CASH value.
- Payment must be made with your Discover Card.

$80 certificate is valid towards a 6-night or longer cruise in all Stateroom categories.
$120 certificate is valid towards a 6-night or longer cruise in an Oceanview or Balcony room.
$160 certificate is valid towards a 6-night or longer cruise in any Balcony room.
$200 certificate is valid towards a 10-night or longer cruise in all Stateroom categories
