These are actually good radios for emergencies IF you are not interested in getting a ham radio license (which is the best option).

They have GMRS bands, you need a license to operate on those, the license cost $70 and covers you and your family for 10 years, no need to take a class or test. The GMRS bands have repeaters, that greatly increase the range.

They also have NOAA channel pre programmed for weather alerts.

And also FRS channels which are license free but have very limited range (about 1 mile in the city)

Looks like the 32 mile range is a dream. From reviews I read, 2 miles is more realistic.
