Sprint is increasing the cost of their “regulatory charge” to 40 cents per line effective 01/01/10. This a bogus fee collected by Sprint as a stealth rate increase. The notice is being sent out in cell phone bills. You have 30 days from the date of receiving notice that this cost is rising to cancel your plan for free.
“Regulatory Charge
Effective 1/1/10, the Regulatory Charge will increase to $0.40/line. Visit Sprint Ts&Cs or sprint.com/taxesandfees for details; also effective 1/1/10, the Sprint Terms & Conditions (Ts&Cs) are changing. Please review them carefully at sprint.com or on request.”
According to Sprint’s terms and condition there is no way to simply cancel your contract, you must terminate your service and you will not be liable for the ETF.
It may take a few phone calls to customer service, but you should be able to find a rep to let you out of your plan for free. If not you can always write to Sprint saying that you do not accept the new terms and you wish to end your contract.
If you want to port your number out of Sprint be sure to tell the rep this before canceling service so that they can notate your account to waive the ETF upon completion of porting your number to another carrier. If you cancel your plan before porting your number out of Sprint you may not be able to get your number back.
If you try to cancel be sure to let us know what happens!
Here are the relevant Sprint Terms and Conditions:
“When You Don’t Have To Pay An Early Termination Fee:
You aren’t responsible for paying an Early Termination Fee when terminating Services: (a) provided on a month-to-month basis; (b) consistent with our published trial period return policy; or (c) in response to a materially adverse change we make to the Agreement as described directly below.
Our Right To Change The Agreement & Your Related Rights
We may change any part of the Agreement at any time, including, but not limited to, rates, charges, how we calculate charges, or your terms of Service. We will provide you notice of material changes, and may provide you notice of non-material changes, in a manner consistent with this Agreement (see “Providing Notice To Each Other Under The Agreement” section). If a change we make to the Agreement is material and has a material adverse effect on Services under your Term Commitment, you may terminate each line of Service materially affected without incurring an Early Termination Fee only if you: (a) call us within 30 days after the effective date of the change; and (b) specifically advise us that you wish to cancel Services because of a material change to the Agreement that we have made. If you do not cancel Service within 30 days of the change, an Early Termination Fee will apply if you terminate Services before the end of any applicable Term Commitment.

Can I just cancel my contract and stay with the service or this is good only if someone wants to close out theyr plan?

I recently switched to Sprint after 10 years wit ATT. Verizon for same unlimited plan was much more and so far the service has been excellent. I left them originally because of really bad cust svc. They’ve come a long way and the coverage has been very good as well. ANy great advantage to switching to anyone else right now? ANy great deals around. I have $99 for unlimited everything and am a heavy user.
Are there any good family plans to switch to? Right now I have 1000 shared minutes w/ 500 text messages for $60. I do need more minutes. Any way to get a cheap and good plan?

A guy in the Sprint retention department just added a $20 recurring credit to my bill for staying with Sprint (I wasn’t actually planning on canceling, but I was not happy with the terms of the revised contract). I had to extend my contract (only on my main line) an extra 13 months or so.
YMMV.

i have gotten new phones fo the family in the past when a similar fee was added.
I asked him to note my account so that when I port my number I won’t get charged an ETF, so he offered me a $10 recurring credit for a year. I accepted.
Then he tells me I’ll have to renew the contract on mymain line, so I said no thanks. I ask him again to note my account so that when I port my number I won’t get charged an ETF. This time he offers me $20 for two years and the contract renewal thingy.
I made him sweat a little, and when I saw I can’t squeeze much more out of him (I already have a plethora of stacked discounts on my plan), I graciously accepted.
can i open a new line get the phone and close in few weeks?

do u @Awesome: do u have a grandfathered plan bec i would like to do this but i have the family plan 2 lines for $51 f&c 7pm n&w also i have added for free first incoming min free 1000 free texts each line free unlimited internet data and tv and sprint nav. free air rave service credit and the mini tower free and free roaming and long distance even on Verizon towers in the usa and they just gave me a free treo pro upgrade from my centro for free with no contract extension also i have unlimited free pic and video messaging PLUS ON TOP OF ALL THAT I HAVE A 25% OFF LEGIT FAMILY AND FRIENDS DISCOUNT.

Good luck with that – in my experience, AT&T will charge you fees even when they are contractually bound not to do so. It took me less than 30 days with their service to get fed up with the lousy coverage, poor value of the plan, and crummy phone to decide to opt out of my contract (which you can do, fee free, less than 30 days after signing up). I decided it was worth the $500 deposit to get Sprint, the carrier I really wanted in the first place. In the process of getting my service cancelled and my number ported over, AT&T made countless “mistakes” in their own favor, ended up trying to charge me over $800 for less than a month of their awful service, sending the bill to collections, harassing my extended family and God only knows who else…it was an absolute nightmare that dragged out for months. In the end, they refused to do right by me simply because they were supposed to – my dad, who happens to be an AT&T customer (as well as one of the “harassees” of the collections agency), threatened to cancel his service with them if they didn’t make things right. Suddenly, things AT&T told me were impossible for them to fix started magically getting fixed. Go figure. With AT&T being who they are, you’d be lucky if they actually did what they said and only charged you a $1000 termination fee.
Sprint has such awesome deals but HALF MY INCOMING PHONE CALLS DON’T COME IN. texts cud come who knows how late… Is it just my phone or everyone has this thing with not receiving phone calls?

I too got the $20 credit every month for two years, but they didn’t say they were extending my contract, even after I explicitly asked them. I’ve been with Sprint since ’06.
my centro speaker was bad and i already got 2 replacments so i called and they told me to call insurence so i did they did not help me bec my phone was not “broken” so i called retentions and said u guys must fix this so she called and got me the treo pro and she credited me the 100 deductable sprint rocks also to guy who missed calls call sprint tell them ur msid prob. needs to be updated mine was and now i never miss a call or text speak to a tec!!!! also the f&f discount was a year ago where everyone was able to get it i just emailed them i want it added and it was put on no prob now if i can only get 20 more off my bill…..

Just for everyones information this is one big scam unless i hear from a live person that did this and it worked i do not beleive this simply beacuse i read all the provisions that sprint has and all the fine print and nowhwere is there a glich t cancel without being charged.

If any1 still checks this I know this is a long shot,but Amazon is selling some of their phones for $0.01 w/ a 2yr contract w/ for a Sprint phone i have my eye on. I already have a family plan which is around $108 a month for 2 lines now I’d like the 1 cent phone and cancel the plan that i was required to get and switch a phone line to the new phone. is this possible?
