Sorry if this is old news, but I just found out (totally by accident) that Gmail Chat is now interoperable with AIM!

To sign into your AIM account up while in Gmail Chat just click on the “options” button under the Gmail chat box and then login to your AIM account.  You will now be able to chat with your Gmail Chat or AIM buddies.  Your AIM buddies are distinguishable from your Gmail buddies by the little AIM icon next to each AIM buddy!

Yay, No more having to deal with that over-bloated AIM adware application ever again!

it’s not like you _had_ been dealing with “that over-bloated AIM adware application” in years 🙂

the news is only about two weeks old, so not too bad.

also, and even newer, if you invite xx2xx@bot.talk.google.com, you can get a translator bot (language2language) into your chat session. or two, one in each direction and you can talk (sort of) with some one without speaking the same language.

use any of these language codes in place of xx2xx above:
ar2en, de2en, de2fr, el2en, en2ar, en2de, en2el, en2es, en2fr, en2it, en2ja, en2ko, en2nl, en2ru, en2zh, es2en, fr2de, fr2en, it2en, ja2en, ko2en, nl2en, ru2en, zh2en

if you’re into avoiding over-bloated AIM adware, and aren’t interested in google-chat, I very highly recommend the open-source GAIM. If you’re used to AIM’s interface, you’ll feel right at home, its very similar (its trying to be).
Its amazingly stable, efficient, ad-free, cross platform (runs on PC, linux, mac, PPC…), and has really nifty features like spell check, auto-away when you leave the computer for a while, etc.
I recommend using the older versions (I use 1.5) if you’re a fan of just AIM- the newer ones try to be an “all-in-one” chat system, supporting google, icq, yahoo, aim, etc… the old ones supported this too, but looked very similar to AIM.
You can find it on sites like oldversion.com

There are dozens of alternate chatting solutions.

The uniqueness of this is that there is nothing extra to sign into; when you login to check your email you have your Gmail Chat and AIM buddies automatically.

@ Mordy:

aol are real jerks.

it used to be called ‘GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger’, but aol complained. so they changed the name to gaim. Later, aol decided to trademark ‘aim’, and started leaning on the gaim team again.

for a long time there were no new releases because of this, (that’s why on even not-so-old versions you need to hack it to get it to work with gtalk). finally this April they changed the name to Pidgin (pronounced pigeon, like the bird).

now i suppose aol will try to trademark that too.

the jerks.
