IMO this is not a deal but rather the true value, education pricing for the 2018 model is $1699. Once you go with 2017 night as well get a 2016 for even cheaper, the performance boost is probably not worth the difference vs the boost between 2017 and 2018. As always, the best option with the MacBook Pro in terms of value retention/performance is to go with the first model of each design refresh (2013, 2016, 2019 next).
Which model year would be the best for the MacBook? I’m looking for a smaller footprint than the pro.
In my opinion the 2017 M3 version is the best bang for your buck MacBook. Good processor and includes the 2nd gen butterfly keyboard. Because of the right thermals the M5 and i7s just don’t show much improvement.
Right now is the worst time to get the smaller MacBook, a refresh is due very soon and if they do it right we can expect the performance of an updated Air packed in a body the same size or slightly larger.
But this one has Touch Bar. 2016 does not…
I’m using a 2016 Touch Bar with maxed out specs right now…

Or you can just get the 13″ MacBook Air from Apple through the education pricing and with the I7 8gb RAM and 128gb SSD for $959 plus a free pair of wireless Beats headphones that they value at $299.
Or from Best Buy with the student discount for $750..
